Got me some free BR9ES plugs from work so the question is will they be ok in place of the standard BR8EG And BR8EIVX plugs????????
im guessing the last letter prefix stands for the electrode type G= ground S=standard and so on am I right?? even close???:pinch:
My thinkin says yes but better be carefull.

yes you are right in the last letter meaning the electrode type,

the BR9ES is the basic ground electrode, they will work in your bike, but keep and eye on them, they tend to be less likely to foul than EIX and other race type plugs

Hold on, you guys have forgot to advise in the most important difference.
Br9 is a colder plug and it may not go as well. Probably an Xr will handle it but it may not burn the fuel as efficiently depending on your jetting. Check it if it runs to rich or doesn't start well go back to the BR8. Although I'm far from being a 4stroke expert.

Yes, in principle you are quite correct - in fact I was going to mention that! But as it is only one grade colder and as Scott pointed out it is the standard type (fat) electrode, and the fact that it is a four stroke it's unlikely to cause any problems unless it's burning oil or running crap/stale fuel.
In theory it will actually run better at WOT as the colder plug will dissapate heat better. The plug won't make it run rich, however if the bike is running rich it will be more likely to foul.
Remember that the heat range refers to the plugs abilty to dissate heat rather than how 'hot' the spark is.

They are not so suitable and will not light the fire as well due to their colder heat range and the earth electrode is not fine wire type, requiring more voltage to jump the gap. Given that many ignition systems on bikes are not blessed with a whole load of reserve voltage Id be running the correct plugs. Fouling resistance will be relatively poor and combustion less efficient. There is a good reason the engineers specified a hotter heat range and a higher specification. ''Free'' always comes at a price.

Much the same as what I said. If there is anyone you should take notice of its Robert (the god of tuning/suspension) Taylor!!! I even managed to surprise him at Puke by asking him to read a plug out of my mates Z900.

Back to the point in an XR for 6 bucks and a change once a year its simply not worth the hassle!
