wouldn't they have to spend a shit load to get the taupo track safe??

It would need to be held at Hampton Downs.
A1GP showed how crappy the Taupo track is for equipment that can put on a proper turn of speed.

Nup, I wouldn't even support a nationals round at Taupo let alone MotoGP. Better off seeing how Hampton Downs shapes up and doing it properly.
Sure it would be good to have MotoGP in NZ but they'd be gone the next year after experienceing a totally unsuitable track. Better off waiting for a more suitable venue and the chance they'd want to actually come back.

I think it would be a total disaster, hampton downs has wsbk for 2010 so wait to see how that goes and then think about motogp (even then I think its pushing it). Just go to philip island, if you're in the south island it costs approx the same anyway!

SBk is far better anyway imo good luck though

I love Taupo track... But I'm a noob. Imo it is in no way suitable for the MotoGP riders  As much as I'd love to have the MotoGP held ten minutes from my house, I say wait for Hampton Downs.
Just my 2c's though

please please build it like philip island but with a huge straight sweeper leading down into a tucker  but not now fuck "a".... wouldn't see them back again :shit: there's no real track really lefted like puk ... but thats aged... an bikes and cars advanced quicker than true designed circiuts

Been hearing some rumours about a MotoGP bid for NZ (from some reliable inside sources, not just pub talk). Logistically it looks attractive, only a short hop from Phillip Is so easy to squeeze in. Attendance dunno but thats the bidders problem.
My guess is it'd have to be Hampton Downs.

What's wrong with puke? :weep:
Pukekohe is crap, and dangerous. It's killed a number of riders in the last few years due to crap run-off in high speed areas. MotoGP is much faster than what the current riders that have raced there are achieving.
Taupo is fun for track days and club racing but I think it lacks a little as an international venue.
Hampton Downs is coming along beautifully and has apparently secured a couple of years worth of WSBK, so making a step up to MotoGP standards after it has been proving as a World Class venue should'nt be too hard. It also helps that Hampton Downs is financially secure, Taupo Motorsport park has been running at a loss for some time now I believe.
Also Pukekohe is owned by horse trainers, not motorsport fanatics, and they really couldnt care less if the the race track was there or not, it scares their horses enough as it is.
And if you dont already know, Hampton downs is only another 20-25mins South from Pukekohe. It is within commuting distance from both Hamilton, Auckland, and possibly Tauranga too, this puts it in prime position in terms of people being able to get to and from the venue easily, not to mention the fact that both Auckland and Hamilton have International Airports... it makes simple logisitical sense for Hampton Downs to be the preferred venue.

No apologies if this is a repost, as the more people that sign this the better,
this is the link to the petition to the NZ Gummint for financial assistance to host a round of the Moto GP here in NZ: www.motogp.co.nz
I know that the pedants will say it should be in the racing forum but I think it has a wider appeal, as the majority of us will be mere spectators....
Email the link to all your mates, let's make this happen people! :)

This is exactly what NZ needs to promote motorcycle racing. I get so fed up with the lack of publicity motorcycle racing gets in this country and feel its more than about time that it got alot more than it does. I hope all you motorcyclists out there get behind this and lets hope that for our sakes that it does happen. It sure would put NZ on the map when it comes to international Motorcycle racing for both GP and Superbikes. :niceone::first:

It's not OK for WSBK. NZ Suberbikes are more like Superstock bikes and MotoGP is an order of magnitude "faster" than WSBK. Much stiffer chassis, much more grip from tyres, and much higher corner speeds.
There's a couple of corners at Taupo where the run off just isn't big enough. Not as bad as Puke by a long chalk, but FIM regs are a lot different to MNZ in that regard.
If Taupo invested in Air Fence then it may be a goer, but I remember that video of Shaun and thought "sheesh" when that wall looms up in the 1st(?) or 2nd (?) corner.

It's a great thought and I wish it would happen, but the chances are less than zero.
Firstly, there are too many rounds now (which is why China bit the dust).
Secondly we are in the wrong time zone (hence the introduction of night racing).
Thirdly, and most importantly, you will need in the order of US$10m up front, and I can't see the Gummint ponying that up.

my understanding when the gov't pledged that money it was based on them securing a single world event. which they did.
At the time they only really considered WSBK and A1GP really i think. Motogp is about money really and we dont have enough. bring on WSBK ill walk to the downs to watch it (but i think i might just ride).
looking at hampton downs even it doesnt look like they have a mountain of run off either.and the off camber hairpin thingy looks like it will cost lots of fairings.
wonder what one of those flash looking apartments will cost

Why do online pentions always want my email address?
The solution to websites like this is mailinator.com
If a website ever requests your email address, just put in <something>@mailinator.com where <something> is the account name of your choice.
You can access any mail sent to <something>@mailinator.com by simply going to the mailinator.com website and using the account name to log in. The service is free and the accounts are disposable.
The downside is that there is no security or privacy. The upside is that there is nothing which links the address back to your real account, so you will never get any spam.
