View Full Version : A brush with the LEOs

Stopped the bike on the side of the road to talk to a friend yesterday......then noticed a LEO :Police: pull up behind me....:shit: (what have I done what have I done??????)...he duly mosied over to me and asked for Licence and WOF......so I put down the stand, took off the gloves, removed the helmet, retrieved the wallet from the jacket pocket and produced the licence. In the meantime I had told him the WOF was in the little plastic sleeve thingy that was attached behind the number plate......he could only see the Rego, not the WOF. So I had to get off the bike to pull the sleeve away from the plate so that he could see the WOF in the other side of the sleeve....he was happy with that and happy with the licence. He commented "Good to see you have your class 6." I replied "Well of course I have it - I'm riding a motorbike!" To which his reply was "Lots of people don't bother these days...." This was a bit of a surprise to me - I thought everyone was like me and duly followed correct procedure re licences...:innocent:...apparently not! Then the real reason for stopping me came out - "I have the 1000cc version of your bike" he said...and we ended up talking bikes.....all in all he seemed like quite a pleasant fellow despite being constantly exposed to all the evils of our modern society.....but I did breathe a sigh of relief as I puttered sedately away afterwards......:sweatdrop

To be pedantic...surely if you were stopped and not on the bike then you wouldn't need your license?

Is this for real?

If you've been for your motorcycle license, you should know what class 6 is. A New Zealand drivers license can have various numbered classes - in combination (1 = car, 2 = medium rigid, 3 = medium semi, 4 = heavy rigid, 5 = heavy semi, 6 = motorcycle), as well as endorsements, see the top section of:
http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/licensing/

And yes, you do need to have your license with you at ALL times while driving (/riding if it's a bike that requires a license) on public roads. See:
http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/factsheets/56.html#otherinfo

Thanks for clearing that up......I'm going to put it in my Sig to avoid confusion.

In regard to the licence carrying question, in the UK the official rules were to carry your licence at all times but if you didn't have it then it was no big problem as you could just produce it later at any station. I'd like to know if the procedure is the same here or can you get a fine for not having it with you.

@ Sinful, Yes i have a full UK licence and been riding for 7-8 years. I am getting it converted whenever I get around to making it to the AA shop.

Yep...must carry at all times when using a vehicle. And it must be for the correct class of vehicle too. Class 1 is ordinary car, van, truck or camper under 4500kg. You can ride a moped on a car licence (moped is under 50cc and under 2.5kw?). But for any bike over that you need a Class 6 licence.
If you fail to produce a valid licence at the roadside, you get a fine and usually banned from driving/riding away. NZ did have the same as you are used to (produce within 7 days etc) but that's long gone.

Thats quite harsh! Im going to have to fold it up and seal it in something otherwise its going to get quite manky and torn. Lucky I have a glovebox on the bike to keep it in when riding haha

anything else I should know about the plod in regard to bikes?

Can you get it laminated? Cheap and effective. And keep it in your pocket/wallet. What if you go out in a car...and there it is, at home in your bike...ooops.

Id love to, so when they try to write speeding points on it I can just wipe it off afterward hahahaha.....

Thats my main issue! they give you a plastic card and a counterpart, so you would logically think you can just use the plastic as it stays safe in your wallet! Oh no thats too logical for them. Its guaranteed Ill leave it in the other vehicle when i actually get pulled over.

I got stopped on my 650 with a class 6L and got sent home - no ticket. Put it back in the shed, son.

THEN, I get stopped in my car coz it has the kids Learner plates on it and I'm the only driver. (it looks like I'm an unsupervised learner dunnit) Can I see your license son, er, old fella ? "Uh, I left it in my bike jacket, officer." "But you do have a license, dont you?" "Yes sir, oh the L plates, just dropped my learner son off at soccer."

Ah *understands* :)

Welcome to kiwi-land AndyOnTheFlyingBrick. There goes me assuming you're a kiwi (who should know that - having to carry your license was pretty well advertised when they changed that) xD.

We have pretty decent government department websites here, so check out the LTSA site I linked to. It'll have full descriptions of what all the classes are here, what the restrictions for various licenses are, what you need to get licenses, how much everything costs etc etc.

The roadcode's up here:
http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/roadcode/

...and for a more in-depth view of all NZ road law, you can always peruse the NZ Legislation website (but yeah, it's slower going ;) ):

Mate & I got stopped in PioPio a while back for a license check,we have both had them for well over 20 years. Copper said you would be suprised how many riders do not have one so they had started targeting license checks

Hay Andy you can get your kiwi one now as they just changed the system
Do I have to sit any tests?
All drivers must know the road rules, what the road signs mean and how to drive safely. Learning the road rules is particularly important because of New Zealand's unique 'give way' rule (when you are turning left, you must give way to vehicles that are coming from the opposite direction and turning right). You can find out more about this rule and others in The official New Zealand road code

.
Some countries require similar driving skills and have similar licensing systems to New Zealand's. Depending on the country you have come from and the class of licence you are converting, you may not have to sit theory and/or practical tests. Other countries may have driver licensing systems that are very different from New Zealand's. People from these countries do have to sit both theory and practical tests.

Theory test?
You do not have to sit the theory test if:

you have a licence from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom or the United States of America, and
your licence is current (or has expired less than 12 months), and
you are converting a car or a motorcycle licence.
You do have to sit a theory test if:

you have a licence from a country not listed above; or
you are converting a heavy vehicle licence from any country.
Practical test
You do not have to sit the practical test if:

you have a licence from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom or the United States of America, and
your licence is current (or has expired less than 12 months), and
you have held that licence for more than two years.

He commented "Good to see you have your class 6." I replied "Well of course I have it - I'm riding a motorbike!" To which his reply was "Lots of people don't bother these days...."

Popped into our local bike shop on Saturday and ended up having a chat with one of the co-owners after Mrs Oakie spied a V Rod that took her eye. The co-owner was saying that she is actually surprised now when people wanting to take a big bike for a test ride actually have a full licence. Less than half wanting a bike over 250cc actually have the right licence. The surprising thing is that these are not kids. They are middle aged people who have had a L licence for a bike and never bothered to upgrade it.

Thanks for the welcomes. If you have a british licence you can just convert it from the 1st of september without the need of a theory test.
