Took the missus to that Pizza place in Featherston last night. Great feed and Thursdays is $15 steack night. Beers are cheap, (if you like speights or Macs gold then its $3 a pint) $5 for bottled beer. Plenty of room outside to, although its not in the sun. The girls amongst us can even get a coffee or a piece of cheesecake.

Badly broken femur. Alan was wearing all the gear which did it's job well and emergency services did a good job too. Nice lady in a VW pulled over, she was actually a gynaecologist, she checked his bits and was the source of some much needed advice (and humour) while we waited for the ambo.

I have been to visit Weaver twice today (see my posts on the other thread here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=1994678#post1994677)). Alan initiated talk of why he crashed and said pretty much the same as Deano wrote above, but accidents happen quickly and he is not exactly sure about the details.
There have been numerous times that I have slowed down because I felt my concentration or safety margin was not the best. It can happen to any of us at any time. Lets be careful out there - especially on the Rimutaka road, its a fun route to take but there have been plenty of accidents by by bikes and cars.

Don't go too fast into a corner !!!!!
But, once there, have faith in your tyres, look into the corner to where you want to go/be and lean more.
Trailing a bit of back brake can help if you have time, but care is needed so you don't lock it up.

Now it's impossible to find part for the rear brake lever set. Suzuki don't make them, tried wreckers and waiting for reply. Don't know if RGV 250 part will fit but it look kinda similar. God Damn It.

Is it just the rear brake lever or the whole rearset (hanger, foot peg, etc)? If it's just the lever, go to the wrecker with the broken one and see what fits from other makes and models. Or another option is to get it welded, depending on what it's made from. If it's the whole rearset, think about aftermarket ones. measure the distance between the centres of the mounting holes and ring around, you might be lucky
quallman1234
27th March 2009, 14:03
The GSXR250's are older bikes so you might be lucky and it might be something easy to weld. Steel etc

Gotta disagree with that my brother from another mother.
If you are hot into a turn, it stands to reason, asking more again form your rear tyre by braking, will make things worse.
Look through the turn, and business as usual from there.

I did say it needed caution.
I've done it several times while drifting wide. In too hot, let go of front brake and tip in, with light trailing of the rear brake. It seems to help tip it in further and washes off a little speed.
driftn
27th March 2009, 14:33
I agree with deano on this one. Have done this many times with CAUTION. Don't stomp the rear break just apply it ever so slightly.
In saying that every body has a different riding style and what works for some often does not work for others.
At the end of the day you should not be riding so fast that you are running wide in corners anyway.

Different strokes it will have to be then guys, but do the math of an over loaded tyre, then aply more load by braking???

Being in too hot doesn't mean you have already loaded up the tyre - especially on the road - it's often about having confidence to lean it a bit more.....and trail a bit of brake.
If it is bad then I must have been extremely lucky all those times eh.......I've never been much of a crasher but.....

Don't see a ME next to your name fella.
Just because your runing wide doesn't mean the tyre is over loaded.
All depends on how fast you are going and what sort of lean angle you have really.

Rephased. Wasn't quite what i meant. I was just meaning, you shouldn't ride past the speed your comfortable at.
Obviously this guy did, trying to keep up?
You know what i mean =).

Different strokes it will have to be then guys, but do the math of an over loaded tyre, then aply more load by braking???
its more likely hte front is carrying the most load going in to a corner too fast. The point is that a lot of run wide corner accidents is due to the rider NOT having the confidence to continue but rather stands up and tries to slow down.Unless you have really misjudged ,you can get around the corner

I'm well aware of the forces at work and where, while cornering.
Using the brakes while leaning over, asks more of your tyres than not braking. Add that to going faster than normally comfortable and it's pretty simple.
If somebody really quick says they are "lightly" applying the rear brake through a turn, I submit there is no actual braking happening, and the gains are 100% in their head.

I tend to agree with Deano and the broken Dalton, but I would add that it's not a technique to be applied in isolation(the point will come soon) We're talking about making the line tighter, slowing down may be desirable but the main concern is keeping the machine going where you want it to, agreed?
What choices do you have; lean over further, hmmm ok, use the front brake or chop the throttle , ewwww, shudder! Or apply the back brake.
I agree that all the above methods do result in increased tyre loading when used in isolation to the other controls.
As pointed out earlier it really comes down to the managing the situation so that the bike is set up not to run wide but if things don't work out for whatever reason the applying the back brake with the throttle picked up will tighten the line, washing off speed without loading either end up in a drastic fashion.
We all have to load the tyres up at times, you generally can't get far over that hill without doing it on at least one of the bikes axis, it's just a matter making smooth transitions between the unloaded and loaded states.

Collin / Speedtriple was following. Into corner fine, mid corner fine, for no apparent reason run wide hit barrier. 1. not looking far enough thru corner. 2 .target fixation. 3. speed was not a factor........

Gotta disagree with that my brother from another mother.
If you are hot into a turn, it stands to reason, asking more again form your rear tyre by braking, will make things worse.
Look through the turn, and business as usual from there.
I agree with deano on this one. Have done this many times with CAUTION. Don't stomp the rear break just apply it ever so slightly.
In saying that every body has a different riding style and what works for some often does not work for others.
At the end of the day you should not be riding so fast that you are running wide in corners anyway.
Don't go too fast into a corner !!!!!
But, once there, have faith in your tyres, look into the corner to where you want to go/be and lean more.
Trailing a bit of back brake can help if you have time, but care is needed so you don't lock it up.
Can I also suggest something else here guys? Riding style, Confidence and faith in the tyres all are a part of that. However the type of bike will also be a huge factor in how you 'extricate' yourself from a hot corner.
Gold Wing etc? There is already a huge amount of mass and inertia energy stored up front and high, that will already be placing a load on the front tyre and suspension with a simple direction change, before braking. A sports bike tends to be short wheelbase and higher seat in its design. That with its steering geometry gives it the ability to 'drop' into corners easier. My own bike is long, low and heavy this by the law of physics means it tends to want to run wide with a noticable tendancy to stand up under heavy braking in fast corners. Deano's suggestion is exactly what I use in a HOT CORNER situation, in fact I will often trail the rear brake in fast corners (We are talking FJ fast here)
Because of my bikes handling characteristics I take an often noticably different line through corners to those on sport bikes. The line, lean angle, speed and gear you choose into a bend also have impact on your choices of modifying your course through the bend.

Well sounds like you've learned your lesson. I can't offer advice on how to ride fast like Deano or Drew (cos I can't ride fast like deano or drew!), but after being off a bike for 13 years and getting back into it, I found the most useful thing was focus on building my confidence slowly. Thursday nite rides ain't the place to do that, Wednesday nite cruise is much better idea as you can always find someone who's goin about as quick as you. Once you have that confidence it ride at a quicker pace.....do track days!!! ;-)

Yeep, those were the days. And I was always last one to the top, and it was great listening to all the Trash talk.
Thanks for the ride up yesterday Mr. J600, enjoyed it. Shame about all the shite on the hill, and what about that hardcore braking/skid mark into the hill side on the waydown? I guess that was the dude who got choppered out on the weekend? And it looked like there had been a two car collision about 3 corners before the top on the U/H side at some point two... yellow markings on the road.
It was good to get a last road ride in before all the plastic gets removed.

Lot's of good advice here, but please be mindful of the following. The people on some of these rides have years, perhaps even decades of experience. They may have done multiple track days or even been actively involved in bike racing. If you are new to biking don't even dream of trying to keep the same pace as these people. The price you pay for overestimating your own skills could be your life or permanent disability. It is not worth it.
Ride at a pace YOU are comfortable with. If you see other people disappearing in front of you, then so be it. They are more experienced and skilled than you are. Keep yourself in one piece and one day you will be at the same level.

This is me every thursday night. But I'm a big wanker so they let me come anyway.
But ya never crash from doing stupid shit FJ....thats the main thing!
Ive hardly been on these rides lately simply because of the 'dumb stupid shit' (ie. passing into blind corners, running over center lines, passing up the lefty, blah blah stupid blah) that I see relatively novice riders trying to pull off in attempt to take on the front. And the 'dick stroking' they get handed out by certain others encouraging there pace and spectacular talents! .....until it goes bad! Look after the newish guys n gals eh! One 'stroke' to much and it could be their last!!!!
There was this time....not all that long ago when the TRTNR rides were fast, shit talking bollocks fun, but in control.
Any of us can crash, but upping the odds by outriding yourself is just mental. If you want good advice listen to Deano, hes dam fast, smooth, sensible and a bloody good track racer and not a 'crasher' like some

One thing I've learned is that good riders riding well within themselves still have accidents. What's important to remember is that we all make our own rules. I don't care if some body wants to wipe out a chevron/armco or two. As long as he only hurts himself. Shit. I'll even help pick him up, crack jokes about his beaver etc. They're still mates.
If you did something stupid, whether or not it was stupid stupid or or just a stupid mistake, I'd still be there to help pick up the pieces. If you deserved a bollocking, I'd give you one. But I'd still ride and drink with you afterwards.
What I'm trying to say, is at the end of the day. Friendship/family is more important than being right.

I have never felt the pressure to try to keep up on the TRTNR's I have attended - I would for sure do myself and/or someone else damage if I tried!
Sometimes the Wed night ride just doesn't work and at the end of the day if you are riding outside your limits that is YOUR choice.
Personal responsibility and all that eh? Besides for me the Wed night ride isn't really an option - they go too far meaning they stay out too late and I can't see proper in the dark so don't feel comfy riding on roads I don't know.

I will start a new thread in the week prior to October 1st and probably ask for it to be made a sticky.
TRTNR is not so much an organised ride, as a group of like minded people enjoying themselves. However, as I seem to be longest standing member that people look to for info etc, I will be proposing the 'Group Rides Guide' be adopted.
The pace on TRTNR is not slow, but that doesn't mean that it is a race either. If people remember that and ride their own ride, at their own pace then we can all have fun without any major problems.
