View Full Version : How do you ride?
Slipstream

I have a big concrete pad, ontop of my garage, that I like to stand and contemplate the world on. While I'm there traffic flows past in many forms.
One day I saw my old flatmate ride past on his R6 and I thought to myself....
He rides like a girl.
Now, how did I know that? What makes it like a girl? Was it the way he looks like he's trying to keep his breasts off the tank in a semi upright position? Or was it the fact that he was wearing high heels? (Kidding about the heels)
I've seen many riders on their bikes and each one has their own style of riding. I mean position in the seat, not riding like in a "bat outta hell" or "mobility scooter" kind of way.
I understand that the type of bike you ride adjusts the way you ride (sometimes) but is there actually a beeter way to be positioned? I mean is leaning over the tank better than sitting upright?
I mean, riding a sports bike for the first time can sometimes give you sore wrist and shoulder muscles. Is this the product of lack of biker muscles, or poor biking posture?
Can you tell when it's a girl or a guy on a bike by the way the rider is sitting?

I ride all slow and gingerly-like.
Also, I find that my posture does tend to be affected by my enormous man-breasts.
And you're missing the nub and gist of things with your 'sore muscles' question. The whole *point* of the sprotbike riding posture is to wave one's arse at potential sexual conquests, who must 'chase' the object of their desire up what is colloquially referred to as the 'mating hill' and attempt to follow it through 'corners'.
If the sprotbiker's would-be paramours manage to 'catch' him (extreme eagerness for penetration is often indicated by slowing down and raising of the cheeks from the motorcycle's seat) then enthusiastic intercourse usually follows. This is called 'lubricating the sprockets'.
The 'sprotbike' riding position, with the weight placed on the feet and wrists, also comes into its own on the ride back home, when the penetratee tends to be in some discomfort.

I think it's largely due to the type of bike and its size relative to the rider...

You're a fair bit taller than me.
I just sort of plop myself down and sit upright with a straightish back. About the same as when I sit on a chair. It's comfy, I can sit on the Zeal all day and not notice it.
And when I want to pretend like I'm going fast, I can put the balls of my feet up on the pegs and lean toward the steering head. Helps with pushing the front through corners, too.
I want my next bike to feel the same.

26th January 2005, 19:55
Given that an FZR750R has a wheelbase about the same as an old Kingswood, and the clipons are below the top tripleclamp, there's not too much choice...
I ride with the balls of my feet on the pegs, arse at the back of the front part of the seat, arms nearly outstretched - maybe a 15° bend.
I used to get sore wrists and butt, but I guess I've got used to it.
I do however, have a near pathological aversion to getting both buttocks off the seat in the corners, so it would be very unlikely to see me hanging off like a monkey on the takas... :D

I tend to ride sitting on the tank.
I find the air vents in my boots are orientated at a sub optimum angle cf the air flow when placed upon the pegs, where by sitting on the tank allows me to dangle my feet in the breeze, and experience the podiatric pleasures of my shiny new Sidi© Vertigo© boots.

i ride balls of feet on pegs, sitting right close to the tank, and with a fairly slouched back i think. Had to sit like that on the CBR to fit inside the fairings else my knees wouldn't tuck in and have kept sitting like that since.

what a good thread. its often challenged me what riding position to adopt I have noticed that if I crouch the wind resistance is eliminated but I don't feel in control of the controls. I am thinking of a modified blade to get the wind deflection right with a prefered position. semi prone.

if you deflect the wind too much you will find you get sore wrists as the wind keeps weight off them by pushing in tou your chest/head

I used to get sore wrists but have sorted that with bent arms relaxed I know what you mean though but its more that being over 6ft I find even on my 900 it feels cramped up and visability is impaired. I think If I had a higher blade it would suit? the thread starter (sorry can't back look) seems too tall for his bike its a fact that most Jap bikes even the big ones are built for 5 ft 6 ..70kg riders and actuallly a triumph might be the go? having said that some of the recent offerings from Japan seem to fit better. 26th January 2005, 22:56
Hey SS, your main goal is trying to be comfy on the bike and be relaxed. Anything you can do to achieve this will only help you.<O:p</O:p
<O:p</O:p
Posture most certainly depends on the bike of course. If we are talking sports bikes here then here are some ways to improve your riding with just your posture.<O:p</O:p
Most common fault that most riders who use the hang off technique face while at max lean is trying to hold on to the bike with the handlebar (or clip-on to be more correct) closest to you too tightly which in return makes you pull on them. That means that your front wheel will try to point into the inside of the corner. Conventionally with most things, that would be fine but since bikes steer with counter steering, this will have negative effect on your riding. To avoid this, you can slot your opposite knee to the inside of your fuel tank (that's what they are designed for) to help you hold on to the bike with out putting too much pressure on the bars. Another use of the fuel tank would be to rest your elbow that is at a higher level during the lean, on it.
Motoracer
26th January 2005, 22:57
Also make sure your arms are nice and "bendy", stiff arms are a definite no no, and it'll only cause you problems.<O:p</O:p
You can also rest your feet on the pegs by your toes; this would give you higher corner clearance if you are talking about going real quick and it'll give a more flexible pivot point when you swivel your hips (the main movement which is known as the hanging off technique).
<O:p</O:pAlso leading with your shoulder and head by pointing it to the exact direction you are wanting to go will a make you go in that direction because where ever you look, that's where you will end up and also by doing that you are transferring the weight to the inside of the corner and helping the bike turn in.
<O:p</O:pAlso you can use your body like a paper weight to put pressure on the right area of the bike for the right purpose. Putting a downward pressure on the front of the bike by ducking down low and resting your torso on the fuel tank under heavy acceleration will help to avoid unwanted monos on a powerful bike. Like wise under braking, you want to sit as far back and with your torso up high and straight to create parachute effect and also help keep the rear wheel down and avoided unwanted rolling stoppies.
<O:p</O:p
There are shit loads of other techniques of body positioning to get the most out of your bike. Ask around and also have a look at how the racers ride on TV or at some race meetings. That'll help you a bit.

If you meant me as the 'Thread starter', I'm a chick :) Although for some reason peopple get it confused more often than really needed I think, both on net and off it :) No back chat from you KK! :P
But anyways, I'm 5ft 8in at 65kg and I used to want an R6 but I still want an R! they're hot :) But in the mean, time I really want to get my hands on a GSXR250 or a Street Magic :)
As for my old flatmate...the one who rides like a girl .... he's 5ft 5in at 55kg and he's from Townsville Australia.
I have noticed that (generalising here) most women, regardless of the bike they ride, sit mostly upright with their butt's sticking out a tad, or more like their butts pushed more into the seat, with their chin up.
Guys (still generalising) tend to hunch over the tank, when on a sportsbike and sit like an easyboy when on a harley and sit straight like a schoolboy in a catholic school run by nuns, when on a non-sportbike or harley.
It would be interesting to know how I ride....need to get me a damn bike :weep:

i ride hard up against the tank, which accounts for why my balls are so small. when i see some chicky babes tho i puff out my chest & sit straight upright to make myself appear larger(more masculine alpha male style). if i pass the cops i hunch down so i am as small as possible in the vain hope they won't see me. when i'm on queen st. I cruise real slow so everyone can admire me & my bike. if i pass a harley i make my body language totally relaxed so as to emphasise the ease at which i went by & if they pass me well i look the other way as if i wasn't trying at all.

my position really depends on what I'm doing.
Commuting with intent: balls of feet on pegs, straight back with stomach against fuel tank (physio's recommendation-works too!) and otherwise not much movement (its only arterial roads and mwy after all)
Chasing MR/WT type folks or track days: again, balls of feet on pegs, shoulder/head pointing in the corner, legs all tucked hard in to the bike or against the big fat tank/fairing (maybe I should stick them out a little so I can guage the corners better, but oh well!) and leaning right down into the dash
