View Full Version : How OK is it to pull a wheelie whilst passing

Out on a ride towards the Coromandel yesterday and the guy on the Honda SP stands it up at 120 odd k and pirouettes past the cage for about god knows how many zillions of metres and probably even changed gear in the process too. VERY impressive, clearly very a skilled rider. But I wonder what the cager thought before/after he woke up from a fainting fit. Good thing the guys personalised plate was pointing at the ground cause if a *555 was called there could have been expensive repercussions.

I'm with the conservatives here, that sort of stuff on public roads is unwise and to be discouraged. Gives us wimps a bad name!!!!

The best ive seen, pops wheel behind car, uses indicator changes lane, passes car, indicates to change lanes infront of car, puts it down, continues riding..... Brilliant!!!

If you see them holding it for over a few hundred metres they obviously know what they are doing.....

Was it a red CBR1000RR?

Hard to say what a cager would think. It's always a laugh following someone like death and watching on comers faces
But yeah wheelies are bad and irresponsible and hurt people not only yourself when they go wrong  but i'll still do em :innocent: just not off crests at high speed for a while

As far as i know if the cager did ring the fuzz, it would be laid as a complaint, if another complaint from another person is laid then it gets actioned, or sumthan like that, kinda hard with no reg thou.

"How Ok is it to pull a wheelie whilst passing" Well that question will just start another mud slinging match. A far more important question would be IS IT OK TO PASS WIND WHILST PULLING A WHEELIE :killingme . Some people might find that type of behaviour far more offensive and the physicists amongst us could ponder for hours over the dynamics of weight transfer and thrust versus momentum versus centrifugal forces. An experiment I will keep in mind for the next track day I get too.

tried to call *555 thee other night as one of the signs on the motorway was hanging half way in to the fast lane! A cop drove by but made no indication that he had seen it as he was in the slow lane. Spent a good 5 minutes trying to get through but no one would answer, what is the point in having a system that no one mans?? (or should that be persons??)

I pulled a mint wheelie past a Falcon one day on my Gsxr750. Chap saw me later filling up with gas and stopped and promptly told me "that was fuckin' awesome man!"

I had a head wobble on all day after that.

hhhmmmmmmmmmmm not sure if i should say anything about this,,,,, i got up to 5th on the bad rep last time i said anything about 'how much fun are wheelies' but wot the hell....doing the teddington(sp)(local) straights a few months ago, got to the left hander turned on2 the nxt straight popd it up clicked 3rd rapidly accelerating towards the wheatchief (local bar) clicked 4th still passing cars on the wrong side of the road looked at the speedo 244kph stll on the back wheel(bet them cagers were impresd by that) then hit the rev limiter and hit the deck in the worst tank slapa i have ever had i thought i was off.... the bike through me over the front but somehow i stayed on, it was all good but it was nearly all bad...dam good fun tho :yeah: but very dangerous and shouldnt be tried without adult supervision.

I'll pick the car to wheelie past. If it looks like a lad or a boy racer, it's all go. Some old fuddy duddy driving a Maxima, waste of effort.

when you get brave enough... sit on the back seat, accelerate, and tug a little on the handlebars

:-P

I wheelied my GN-250 a little by accident using that technique. I don't want to do it again cause it scared the living daylights out of me.

Same here on my 250

I used to pull up the front easily on a KMX125 and DT125 on my mates land. Sitting as far back in the seat and pulling the bars worked (an almost empty petrol tank also helped), until I flipped it (ouch). From then on I always, always kept the back break covered (as say all the hexperts anyway), just in case.

Nowadays the front wheel on my bike only comes up by accident when I accelerate hard.

I don't believe that the majortiy of cage drivers would be impressed to be honest. They'd probably think, "there goes another freakin dangerous motorbike rider fuckwit posing a threat to the fabric of society and world peace" , just before they turn without any warning or indication taking out another bike that was overtaking which they hadn't bothered to look for.

I on the other hand, I think it's disgraceful behaviour and there's no place for it in a modern law abbiding society ( ;) ). However I still let out a girlie titter when I see one done properly. Then again I also laugh when I see someone pull a crap one.

They were dirtbikes weren't they? The CBR is a lardass and can't pull rolling wheelies or anything fancy like that. Those dirtbikes would be a fair bit lighter, and the DT is a 2 stroke right? And would the KMX be a 2 stroke also?

My MC19 CBR can get the nose up easy enough in first and second with a bit of 'aggressive' clutch blipping, it's all in how you position yourself.

i tried on my CBR250 but the best it got was a little 1 inch jump, and even then, I was worried I was going to snap the chain or fuk the clutch or something.. so I didn't really try. I'm still working the courage up to have a go on the 636. When I'm off it (like now), I'm well keen to give it a go, but when I'm on it, it's another story. I don't want to bin it!! I have had it up a few inches under acceleration, but then I think that if I keep accelerating, I'll do what I see in those crash movies, and flip over.. no ta.. Did a monster wheelie in a carpark on my bro's RGV250, then tried to do it again to show him, and guess what - couldn't do it :sneaky2:

A couple of years ago, I was coming back from uuup north in the cage, just past the Albany turn off going over the hill toward the city, 2 bikes came past (chick out in front on a cruiser, and a bloke on a white R1) doing about 150.. the guy slowed to about 90 and we past him again, then almost right next to us, popped up the front and fukt off at who knows what speed. Was impressed at his talents, and there wasn't any traffic around apart from the 3 of us..

I guess if you've got it, flaunt it, but don't loose it, and don't be stupid. It will definitely land you in hot doodoo with the fuzz, but still as impressive as hell. I wish I had the balls to do it, but I wouldn't generally on the open road.

Also took my CBR on Puke, coming off Castrol at full scream thinking I was doing alright, then someone on an R1 (I thunk) flew past me like I was stood still, then picked the front up and fukt off twice the speed I could do on 2 wheels.. That impressed the hell outta me..

k, rant over.. :2thumbsup

Pick the right car, and you should be ok. Just don't get caught. Certain people get a kick out of seeing people wheelie. Just yesterday, I was in Martinborough, and I pulled a FEEBLE, small wheelie past a jogger, and she gave me a huge smile. Ofcouse, she could have been laughing at how small my wheelie was

Young kids love'em, and boy racers.
And, from what I read from Slipstream and CSL, so do women

Lots of people appreciate them from what I've seen. My wheelie skills are non-existant but the times I've been following the one wheeled brigade (brucy, WT, Death etc.) I've seen quite a few car drivers make approving noises (remember the white van on the way down to Wgtn/Coldkiwi last year bruce? I think he got the show twice after we stopped and was delighted!)

Somewhere out there on the web is a vid with a bunch of stunters cockups. No doubt there are many- this vid ends with some guy flipping it, the bike slides along the road and hits a parked car, shunts the car backwards and pretty much writes them both off. If the car had been moving it probably would have gotten airborne and landed on its roof, hollywood style. If I did a wheelie, thats probably how it would end up

I did pass a car while airborne once. Betwixt Blenheim and Kaikora theres a breif stretch of road that is real bumpy. I decided to pass there, forgetting just how bumpy it was, as the car went down the other side of the bump I kinda carried straight on- wheels flying past his window.

A wheelie while overtaking wouldn't fit the boy racer legislation. It would simply be dangerous driving, No impounds and no 28 day suspension (unless speed is a factor, 50+ over the limit). You'd still be in pretty deep poo though.

I've never had the inclanation to pull wheelies, not even in my rash stupid days. Once however while riding a R80 BMW with a side car attached I passed a car on two wheels with the side car, (and passenger) balanced in the air. The joker in the car thought it was a great stunt but my female passenger wasn't impressed.

I know I'll probably get bombarded by bad rep for admitting to such rash stupidity but I don't really care.

I've been driving the hospital van with a load of patients, the consensus was that the dude doing the wheelie was awesome and everyone enjoyed watching. As far as me in my Surf, go for it! :niceone:
At the end of the day its your licience and all I'd say is only do it on the open road.

I think wheelies are pretty cool, when driving my car, and I see a biker doing a wheelie I am very impressed.
The only problem is there is only a few of us in chch that do em......

Dude you're a legend - pulling a wheelie while driving your car!! Bucket loads of rep points coming your way!! You must be hung like a stallion!

No I didn't exactly plan it that way. Trig Rd North heading back to Tauranga has a clear but undulating straight just before it crosses the Waihi Beach road. I wind her up and figure there might be a bit of lift off the top, and yes, I did underestimate it. Fun though. Would I do it again? Yes. Jjust to test at what speed it does jump though, purely research you understand.

I figure maybe that chap writing the tips for new bikers thing could include a "what happens when you..." section. Why is it that cars jump and bikes just climb?

I just had a disturbing reminder of why we should all think about taking it easy. A freind of mine just sent me an email titled "Suzuki GSXR1000 crashed at 280km/hr....!!"

Horrific pics. They have basically collected all of the riders body parts and put them in a pile by the side of the road. No kidding. I hope to christ that it's a mock up, but something tells me it's not.

If your morbid fascination for such things means that you can't resist seeing them, send me a PM and I'll send them on to you, they are too graphic to post on a public forum IMHO. Take it easy people. I pity the cops, ambo's and fire fighters who have to tidy this kind of shit up.

If you can't do it then you need to learn. :yeah:

Accidents like the ones just mentioned are so tragic "RIP"

I've seen it once, and won't ever forget it. Leathers provide no protection against sevre blunt impacts. The guy got basically diced into 15 or 16 pieces by trees.

I was driving my Crappy old (but reliable ) Toyota corolla back down to welly a few weekends back and I was around the taupo area cruising along at about 110 and out of no where four guys pass me all wheelie past. There were 2 ZX10R's one CBR1000RR 04 (I think?) and a Aprillia RSV 1000 :)
I was just like "whoa that's the coolest thing:) " kind of like a bit of a pick me up on a somewhat boring drive.

cool :)
