View Full Version : Who's had a door opened at them whilst riding?

Now I can understand car doors opening in 50K areas but today as I was riding back to Taupo from Manfeild through the nice twisty way (100K area), I was mid corner when the back door opened in an on coming car, RIGHT as I was beside it. If I had of been another half a meter or so to the inside I would of been taken out.
So what I'd like to know is if this happens often or it was just a freak mistake of the person in the back seat... Your opinions/stories?

Never had it happen to me.... BUT, more importantly, glad you weren't taken out, Jas! :niceone:

Have not had it whilst riding
But towing a trailer past a car sales yard, Honda prelude opens door, trailer collects door, driver sits there watching door bend nicely into front fender, and distroy the front bumper lights etc
I kept on truckin......didnt feel a thing.
Yes People in rear passenger seats of cars never bother to look. They even get pedestrians and bend cars parked beside them.

Wow! That's gotta freak you out a bit! I reckon it would depend on several things whether it was purposeful or not... Were you riding towards them or after following them were you passing them?

I had some clown do this on the Hutt Motorway while I was splitting about four years ago.
Slammed on the brakes and just managed to stop in time.
I got off the bike to argue it out with the driver. Unfortunately for him two cars behind was mufti police car who saw everything.
His excuse? "Bloody motorcyclists think they own the road. I get sick and tired waiting in traffic and these smart-arses just ride down the middle. I thought I'd give him a taste of having to wait."
Idiot. Cop did him for careless use of a motor vehicle.

they should be done for attempted murder. stupid f**kers.
I'm fortunate I haven't experienced anything like that before.

Not really. I wouldn't have been doing more than 30km/hr at the time. Worst that would have happened would have been a lot of broken fairings.

fairly hard work if a conventional car - real easy if its a 1960s Lincoln Continental...

dirty bastards... I had a half brick thrown at me once, square in the chest.
Too damn winded to turn around, follow them and get the number plate, but I suspect that is the best solution.

SHit, that could fricken kill you! On coming at 50kmh + 50kmh in the other direction = 100kmh impact speed. That would have been very nasty!!!!

Sorry, I was reacting to Meeky_Mouse's first post about having the door of an oncoming car opened at her in a 100k zone. attempted murder might still be incorrect, whoever opened the door probably either made a mistake or was just trying to scare, but if she hit it it could have been serious.

Wasn't so much freaked out as wondering "wtf! Was that on purpose or what?!" Then.. "Phew :sweatdropI still have my head attatched"Like I said in the first post, it didn't happen on a motorway or anything... Was in the middle of the twisties.
I was going around a right hander, the car was on coming so it would of been a left turn for them. Lately I've been noticing I've gotten into a bad habit of riding close to the centre line in right hand turns so in the past week or so I've been trying to take the outside line around right hand turns... I think that just saved me!

Ouch!! That would of hurt soo much! How are you after the weekend btw?
I thought about turnin around to catch up and see what the deal was... But considering it was double yellows, narrow road and very few driveways for at least 4 kms it wasn't worth endangering me or other road users to turn around.

coming along slowly, yesterday took me 5 minutes to get out of the car, today is only 3 and a half!
Don't want to be tying shoe laces, or coughing, or making bowel motions!

hey jas, good to hear your ok,
id say that if the car was comming around the corner its possible that the door of the car wasn't shut & came open on the corner.
best to stay to the left when posable,
i had a close call going around the east coast, car & caravan comming the other way, caravan was half way across my side of the road comming around the corner, it was only luck that i was on the left of my lane!

What a tosser, maybe he wanted to :buggerd: you...:angry2:
I had it happen to me in the cage once upon a time, was outside a school during School C exams (remember School C...) when a kid late for his exam swung the door of mummies illegally parked Audi directly into the front fender of my Valiant. The beasty Valiant tore the Audi door all the way back like a suicide door and left a little scratch in the paint of my fender. Just had to keep my :calm:, deny any responsibility for the accident:whistle: and exchange details. Never heard from them again.

Had a bottle thrown at me while riding many years ago. Have had more cars than I can even recall move over to block me as I split lanes. This was almost a daily event. Hit more car mirrors/bumpers with my mirrors or foot pegs than I can remember while splitting lanes.
Was with a friend and he opened his door into oncoming traffic and a friendly bus took it off for him.
Have had a few women show me their tits over the years while I was riding. I guess that full face helmet and black visor allows them to think I am good looking and worthy of seeing their tits?

Yeah, the cagers, they hate it. This is just one of the reasons why we (the royal "we") split f*cking gently.

I would also suggest that it may have been accidental.
If it was deliberate, you'd have to wonder what has caused that person to despise motorcyclists to that extent.

Hit more car mirrors/bumpers with my mirrors or foot pegs than I can remember while splitting lanes. If you hit my car whilst splitting, you'd be well advised to remember the car to look for the next morning... Sure I'd get a ticket for having a 'senior moment' that ultimately saw you over the handlebars and into intensive care, but I'd wager it'd be a small one. Splitting makes sense in stationary traffic imho, but don't fucking hit other peoples vehicles for fucks sake.

Even when they change their position in the road without checking their mirror first?
I had a little asian woman this morning drift into my path as I went past.. I wasn't going more than about 30km/h. She caught me, not the other way around. Does that count as me hitting her?

Yes, you're doing the splitting. It's your place to avoid everyone else.

Oh, I keep forgetting to thank you for your recommendation of the CRG bar end mirrors - that sturdy billet alloy doesn't mark at all no matter how many times you thwack them back against car wing mirrors.

No clue and it really doesn't matter, but I never hit them intentionally. I do believe people did intentionally try to squeeze me out of passing them. Those that were successful, I couldn't pass, those that weren't, I might have clipped them.

On the other side of the coin, I take a VERY dim view of people that try to kill me because they think it's funny.
Being in a cage does not give anyone the right to intentionally attempt murder. In doing so, they deserve everything they get :2guns:

Had a door open on me while filtering on the northern motorway here on the shore, luckly i was told bout that shit happening. Reacted quick enough to stop, only one person was in the car and that was the driver so let him go and he lost his passenger mirror. Oops i guess. :niceone:

They do make a nice "thwack" sound. Nothing like hearing it and seeing the brief flash as their mirror goes flipping back at them. It's like thunder and lightning, they go together so harmoniously... The joy, the joy...

I once saw a bus take out the door of a Mecedes. Guy opened the door as the bus was coming in to park up against the kerb. The look on the drivers face..............priceless. :2guns:
