It's just experience.

To give you could expample of what we're up against, I was playing Tennis at the Hamilton Club in Tristram Street last night. A few little bastids were fanging up and down the Hamilton 400 pit area with a very obnoxious little pit bike. After an hour or so, I'd had enough and told them to piss off.

The talk in the bar later was :"...those fucking noisy motorcyclists.."
So essentially you and I get grouped with those spotty teenagers and their $250 Chinese mini bike...

Gotta be some pretty odd people in that bar to group together a guy riding down the road on a sunny day, with some teens thrashing a pit bike in a car park at night.

those - Indicating a specific few.

We've already covered that in previous posts. That aggressive person is going to act like that way in any situation in life. It's more about getting them off the road than getting bikers to "behave".

Do you agree that the behaviour of individual motorcyclists can impact on other motorcyclists and motorcycling as a whole?

I agree that it can when it comes to a few crazy egoistic road users. But not to the extent that you believe has an effect. That overall aggression toward motorcyclists resides in a small percentage of road users' mind, not the general public's.

That's small comfort for the innocent motorcyclist who is run off the road by one of those small percenters.

And remember, we're not just talking about what car drivers can do to us - we're also talking about what the people who make legislation can do to us.

Thats not what this thread is about. You asked the question, about public perception, this is why we cant have a conversation with you via threads. You change the topic to avoid answering the questions or our posts.

Do you agree that its absurd to think that people who see some dick on a bike then think that all motorcyclists are dicks? Because I do. Do you agree that some car driver who has a bad experience with a motorcyclist isnt going to take it out on the next person they see on a bike, they had a bad experience with a dick not the bike.

...Gonna have to change that to cocks soon just to spice my posts up...

What the hell is wrong with you? You are so fixed on what you think is right you cant even think about what others are saying when you ask for opinions. Whats the point in these threads, they are only about YOU and just YOU.

You obviously care about saving lives.. we all care, go out and do something constructive instead of being on KB baiting people and ignoring what they have to say. Wasted enough time.

If you are a smaller minority group then the actions of a few can create a public perception. This makes a perfect example....

I was once stopped in Greytown and beaten up by a car load of Black Power members because some guys on bikes had cut another one of their members up and the unsecured three year old daughter had hit the the dashboard from the back seat during the evasive moves to avoid the bikers behaving like cocks.

I was on my Rg250, so it would have been about 1989. They broke a rib and messed my face up before asking if I knew who the guys on the other bikes were.

Don't tell me it doesn't happen. You never know when you are going to meet a psycho in a car.

Rubbish. Judging by recent experiences I'm pretty sure I'll meet a psycho in a car on every ride. (having said that chances are high I'll also meet a psycho on a bike).

I've had normally sane rational people tell me they close gaps on bikes filtering at lights etc because they get angry that the bikes get to the front of the queue.

Gotta say I am surprised by the amount of negativity directed by 'us' motorcyclists towards other road users...

Not doing ourselves any favours springs to mind altho my original vote was "looks like fun but I might get wet" which was motivated by comments actually made to me.

My experience over many years of riding has been a keen interest and admiration, even envy displayed by fellow road users. Sure there are some a-holes out there who have a chip on their shoulder and wanna do GBH just cos a bike can get thru the traffic where they can't etc... but in general I reckon if you treat other road users with courtesy thats what you will get in return.

So I guess what I am saying is that its a very individual perception depending on what your OWN attitude is when you are on two wheels.

I think this poll is a load of old bollocks, most of the public are to worried about the goings on in their own lives, paying the rent ? mortgage, worring about their kids, what to have for tea tonight, etc.
This poll is abit like asking station wagon drivers what they think the drivers of minis think of station wagon drivers, my point is this poll is pointless.
If you want to gauge the feelings of the general public then poll the general public ,not other bikers.
Is this poll more about justifying wanting to be a hard assed out law biker, or a rebble with out a clue?.

The point is to get motorcyclists to take a look at themselves and consider how their actions might dictate public perception.

:Public perception.

How do you think the general public perceive motorcyclists?"

Even accepting the general concept you are trying to make, do you not think that the (small) proportion of the public that has any specific perception at all of motorcyclists, will have markedly different perceptions of the different types of motorcyclists?

Mabel, if she notices motorcycles at all, probably has a rather poor perception of the patched Harley rider. But her perception of the little Asian chick on the scooter is probably quite different (Cecil has his own perception of the Asian chick, too. If Mabel finds out about it he's in deep shit).

And another perception again (and again, different for the two of them) of the young lad on the GN250, the leather clad guy on the big sprotsbike, and the old buffer chugging along on his BSA B31.

All motorcyclists, but I venture to say that a member of the public percipient enough to think of them at all (other than as mobile street furniture) will perceive them quite differently.

The follies of the Harley rider do not necessarily redound upon the head of the scooter riding chick.

Objectively here:
Most cagers do NOT GIVE A SHIT ABOUT MOTORCYCLISTS!!!
If they did, they would wait at giveway signs, stop signs, driveways, T intersections, keep to their side of the road and generally act like we actually exist.

Motorcylists are to motorists what an ant eater is to an ant. Chew you up and spit you out without a thought or shit you out 24 hours later..

Only cagers who ride motorcycles actually realise we exist when out riding and the rest don't give a dam. They know full well that if they choose, a simple flick of the steering wheel will end your life and they have nothing to worry about if contact should occur.

Some do not care at all and if they could run you off the road and get away with it they would and some do.

There are many motorists too, who respect us and move over when they see us coming up behind. Their kids hang over the back seat to get a better look and wave like hell and when we wave back the parents wave when we pass.
Many come up and talk when we are parked and look our bikes over and remark about them.

Perception? Hell I bet a lot of them are jealous they have a car full of sprogs, a missus that will smack them around the head if they go over a 100kmh and wish they were as free as us.

Enjoy your motorcycling, don't think so much, don't be so paranoid about our freedom being taken away because the day it is, democracy has ended and motorcycling will be the least of your worries. Make the most of your liberty while you can mate :)

My take on the grunting and 'cock suck offerings' is that they do nothing to help his 'supposed argument or himself' seem in any way credible...I just see the trolls of a bored, lonely and drunk old man.

NOW I really do feel like I've achieved something ...I propose we call this club the 'Katman offered us his cock but we wouldn't touch it with yours' club.

As I have said previously I have never completely disagreed with the sentiment of your message...just your delivery. NOW though I find the 'points' are becoming so pathetic and grasping that I find I can't even agree with your sentiments anymore - just too clouded out with your bullshit now. Other people in this thread, who clearly also agree with you are having far more impact through their postings than you ever will.

Maybe it's time for Katman V2, see if he can't revive the 'holy cause' of saving all the good bikers out there from the publics apparent perception and hense compulsion to run them down/beat them up etc etc because of the antics of all those horrible naughty bikers out there.

AND NO I don't have anything to add to the argument, because frankly there is no point as you'll no doubt start another thread exactly the same in a week or so where you will continue to cover the same old ground in the same sad and pathetic way. If it wasn't so amusing to watch you dig yourself into that hole further and further and to see you get your knickers in a twist (in that way that only you can do) I'd put you on ignore. It's not that good news Les - it suggests that the only good bikers are those with imaginary friends, bible thumpers, god botherers etc.

There are a good many professional people riding bikes and rising them sensibly and a lot of the public appreciate that.

I for one have never had any negative responses from nn bikers other than "Ooooh I'm jealous - how long does it take to get a full licence?"

A minority of people have a problem but most people want to be us. I know I did for about thirty years before I finally pulled the finger out and sorted it.
