View Full Version : Yet another fatality

Heard from my mum (works at the local paper) that some rider got himself killed doing high speeds along a lovely straight today at about 11am. It would have been a nice ride for him, if it wasn't for the Learner cage driver with the massive Pajero 4WD pulling out of a school driveway.

He was put throught the driver window or something, instantly dead. All happened outside my old school too, exam time as well and the students can't get in till the cops get it all cleared. Road's blocked off both ways.

Yet another idiot making the cops pay just that little bit more attention to us riders :(

In summary:
Rider enjoying high speeds + Learner driver with massive Pajero 4WD = Got life insurance?

Bloody idiots :angry2:

How high is 'high speed' and how blind was the cahn driving the 4wd.

Not sure about speed .... if the location is where I think it is then visibility is clear for about 200m from the driveway of the college. He probably was going rather fast (160km/h or so)

He should have had no trouble seeing the cycle, I'd say it was fault on both parts from the info I have been given.

speeding outside a school is ALWAYS stupid.

We can't say that 4x4 Pajaros reversing out of drives are anymore a threat than a Lada 100ls can we unless we hate 4X4 drivers? and buy into the PC crap going around.
but then again Pajero is spanish for Dick!
the Japs pick words out of dickshonaries all the time
like the Mazda Emina. I always thought that was a supository.

i was told Pajero meant Car or Jeep or somthing really boring along those lines in some other language.

and anyways, bad on both parts by the sounds of things... however if he was going REAL fast and driver didnt have much time to see... :S sorry fellow biker.. your bad.

anyways jsut offtopic if Si hapens to read this, ill b @ AMC tomorrow night, signing up then sending away for racing licence.. yeah well look whos laughing now eh KB'ers? KK is finally gunna do it, if the RVF doesnt blowup @ track time then its ALL GO! :)

Yeah it was outside Pompallier College.

Poor kid though, he'll have that on his consience for the rest of his life... after all he basically killed the guy and had to have him land on his lap dead.

One more rider for the road = more cop focus on us innocent ones :o

I also heard he was only going around the 100-120km/h (in a 70km/h zone)

Lou Girardin
11th September 2003, 08:11
That kind of speed is a bit stupid if it was around school start or finish times. But the main fault is still with the 4wd driver.
BTW Pajero is Spanish slang for wanker. (Truth in advertising!)

-past a school, thats just fuking stupid!
I dont care if you guys don't agree, but IMO he would've died sooner or later, turns out it was today!

I hear you all saying its up to the bike riders to avoid the idiots, but now you think it's the car drivers fault that the guy got killed.
It might have been the car drivers fault that there was an accident, but it wasn't his fault that it was fatal.

wonder if he had his headlight on?

Interesting....a road with clear visibility for 200m.......ever thought that the speed limit is set at 70 because there's a school with an entrance onto the road? I realise this is all guessing and hypothetical, but perhaps riders should be aware of driveways and openings and make a hazard/risk assesment and ride accordingly....not go it's a flat clear road yeeharrrrr.

I almost got killed (almost is the important bit for me) when a tractor pulled out into my path as I was overtaking. Had I observed the opening, I wouldn't have been in a position to be hit. The driver didin't look before pulling out...so technically it's his fault....but I as the rider could have done more to keep myself safe.

TTFN

ps KK think I'll have to make a special trip tonight to see the momentous event:gob:

Well I honestly think it's both their faults. He would have died one day doing that either way. Just as some of are doing when we push our luck. But that's the risk we take.

Also the father of the boy who was involved had killed someone also in a cage (not his fault though). Poor family just isn't having any luck with their 4WD's huh :(

Another rumor I heard (until I read it in the paper and get real facts), apparently it was a Restricted driver and he was on his own in the 4WD. When they collided, the Paj tiped right over.

Pompallier isnt really your typical city school. Its kind of out of town on the outskirts out past Maunu on the road to Dargaville and is set way off the road, probably 100-200m down a rightofway.

still not the place i'd wanna speed though.

Antallica

Nice big pic on the front page of the paper.... can't tell what the bike is but it's a nice bright yellow Suzuki sport bike. Possibly a GSX-R from the look of the rear (bike is on it'side).

Eveything from the tank down is fine but the rest... is all over the place. Paj is on it's side.

It was a 4th former (15 year old) driving the Paj. Obviously on his learners... it didn't say anything about an adult in the passenger though (me thinks illegal driving from the kids part). The dudes was 28. Cops haven't figured out the crash details yet... pretty slack.

Now the school principal wants the speed limit along the road to be reduced to 50km/h instead of 70km/h. Like that is going to make a difference IMHO.

Someone mentioned the school is way off the road and sort of out of town. Perhaps he didn't know there was a school there.

I know on several rides that many of us see those little towns on main roads where the signs say reduce speed to 70 or even 50 kph and many go right through at 85 kph. There could well be someone pulling out unseen.:o

Also speeds of bikes in accidents always seems to be exagerated once the facts are known. Sometimes it is suggested but the actual speed is rever released. You can't judge until all the facts are known.
:argh:

Notice how easily the suv tipped over.

Coldkiwi
11th September 2003, 18:09
yellow suzi? sounds like a TLR

must've been some impact for it to roll the SUV... although the kid may well have panicked and wrenched the wheel. What were the parents doing?

What?

Pajero (pronounced par-herrow) strictly translated means "Gripper". Sp. slang = wanker.

Very true advertising. Oughtabe compulsory:D

of course noone mentioned the logic behind 15 years old being Learner is impossible (age restriction is 16 minimum).....let alone Restricted.........

huh? who what where when how why? age limit? in NZ 16? its 15!!

if thats what we are talking about. if not. hah :Offtopic: but good 2 c u tonite Si, Mitch, and that other GS dude, oh and sharpe

Antallica

Yeah it's 15.

Marmoot
12th September 2003, 11:21
wtf? It was 16 4 years ago. When did they lower it? Why the heck did they lower it?
Where I came from it was 17 the minimum age for driving!!!
Is the government out of their minds? (well.....like if it's something new?)

MikeL
12th September 2003, 11:28
Are you sure Marmoot? I think it's always been 15. I remember when I moved here from Australia I was amazed to discover that a 15 yr old could get a licence. In most similar countries the minimum is 17 or 18.

I got my car and bike licence at the beginning of 1970 when I was 15 - yeah so I've been riding a long time, and it was 15 long before that. Then before that you probably didn't need a licence in NZ in the good old pioneering days.

One of my daughters got her learners license on her 15th birthday,3 yrs ago, she's had a full license for ages (car - you don't think I'd let my kids ride bikes doya?)

Didn't think anyone on this forum could beat my record: licence in 67.

But of course I lied about my age...

By the looks of todays paper the kid is in an Auckland hospital somewhere, & the cops aren't sure whether to charge him or not (for manslaughter I would say).

Honestly, even though I am 17. I would have to say that NZ should have an 17-18 yr minimum to get a license. Kids that age are just to stupid with their vehicles, me included. Glad I am on a bike rather than some big friggin 4WD. Bloody stupid kids/hoons imho.

It wasnt just the young kids fault. how terrible do you think he feels right at this moment...... it's so easy to sit back and blame the cage drivers but we dont know the full extent as none of us were there to witness it. Ok so the young guy pulled out on a biker, if that guy on the bike wasnt travelling the speed he was he would most probably still be here today.

I think it's time we stopped blaming cage drivers for every time a bike rider fucks up. Sure ive had my run in's with cars, but not all were there fault, sometimes it was my own mistake that got me into that situation in the first place!

All i can say is i feel damn sorry for that young kid, he has to live with that for ever.........and as far as we know it might not have been his fault.

Worst drivers ive encountered on the roads are middle age business men driving holdens, stay very far away from them!

Marmoot
12th September 2003, 22:31
You must be at least 15 years old before you can apply for a car driver licence.

Shoot....that was direct quote from LTSA website.
We musta be the country with youngest driver license age in the world

My understanding of the road law - is that it is illegal to reverse on to a road anyway.

Has anyone also noticed that it details in the road code http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/roadcode/contents.html how Cage Drivers should be aware of cyclists, horses, truck and pedestrians - but no where does it say anything about motrocyclists???

Logic?

So, say if you put your car into your driveway and there's no space to turn around, it's trapped there forever?

bikerboy

I'm not sure about rural areas but in most city building bylaws one must provide a turn around area to any drive or private right of way so that vehicles do not reverse on to roads. :)

So failing to do so means the access is illegal and yes it is illegal to reverse on toa road. I bet the boy won't be charged as the accident was
"caused by the speeding biker." The police position is if speeding is involved that person is responsible no matter what extenuating circumstance are.:argh:

Antallica
13th September 2003, 10:53
Also I heard that there might have been a big vehicle in the way blocking most of the road view. The kid obviously pulled out not looking properly.

But yes the accident was more the bikers fault of course :)

Well this is the 3rd cycle accident in the last few months where at least 2 resulted in death of the cyclist, I can just see the cops paying more attention to us Northlander riders from now on.

:angry2:

The g/f got me a present today... it's a nice bit of fairing off the bike involved in this accident, it'll probably go on my keyring. I wouldn't have minded the whole bike actually :D

According to superstision, this fairing should keep my ass in one piece. I doubt that ;)

The dude had 2 kids too :(

I hate key rings on bikes. Jangling around in my face and generally being a distraction.

But then I also hate losing my only key constantly. Amazing how it can climb up under your open visor to hide when carrying your helmet. Dropping it into your fairing on a wet dark night is a real good time, the little bastard.
