A few years ago I was doing ~170mph (273kph) on the Pacific Coast highway outside of LA. It was ~3am and nobody else was out. The road is very well lit and glass smooth. Was bored and thought I'd open it up a bit.

After 3-4 miles of holding the throttle at the stop in 6'th gear I dumped all my speed to stop for a red light (I try and only break one law at a time). The the traffic lights along the PCH don't have sensors, just timers and they take forever. I dig in my pocket for the mobile to read a text message somebody had sent me.

I do my thing and then put the mobile away just in time to see a member of the local constabulary in my mirror nearly rear end me.

He jumps out the car waving his gun around and tells me to step off the bike.

I oblige his request as he proceeds to search and cuff me.

He sits me down on the curb and asks me "Do you have any idea how fast you were going!?!!?" (as to not incriminate myself) I reply "honestly, no officer, I was too busy watching the road".

He says "Really. That's very interesting. I only ask you that because I HAVE NO IDEA HOW FAST YOU WERE GOING".

At this point I became full of glee at the prospect of getting out of all this because the police have a very high burden of proof for speeding tickets over here.

He interupts my happy thoughts with the statement "I have no idea how fast you were going because when you flew by, me my radar gun simply displayed an error message. I called into the station house to ask about that error message while I was coming after you. It turns out that my gun won't read any higher than 155mph and that error was telling me it had just picked up an object faster than 155mph. So I'm going to ask you again. Do you have any idea how fast you were going?"

At this point I knew I was completely hosed and I came clean.

Total damage was spending the night in the county jail. Suspended license for 2 months. Nearly $2,000usd in fines to get the bike back. A lesson learned.

A couple of years ago I was riding along SH16 coming back from Wellsford and I opened it up a bit to pass some young fella on a ZXR250 and a soccer mum in a Toyota Previa (think they got the last laugh!). It was only a brief manoeuvre, but I was fortunate enough to meet a nice man (he did have some sort of a gun) who gave me a certificate for my efforts (cost me $640? when i went to redeem said certificate) and a voucher that gave me 28 days off riding/driving any vehicle. About a week later a letter arrived which said that I'd won 50 bonus points, and if I tried a little bit harder, I'd be eligible for another voucher that would give me a further holiday from riding/driving for far more than 28 days! Lesson learnt!:weep:

173 (+-) mph on a '99 Hayabusa on the road from LA to Las Vegas. RPM's were about 8,000, with an 11,000 redline. Bike was hardly breathing hard. I was the limiting factor.

Used to regularly do a 400 mile ride in four hours with three gas stops and a 30 minute lunch break on the Interstate 5 from LA to Oakland/SF Bay area.

Now, I go about 70 kph ripping around the back roads, scaring sheep and cows wherever I go and terrorizing little villages with my motorcycle.

Back in about 1985- when the most powerful bike I had ever ridden was a CB350 twin, My Big brother let me out on his Castrol 6hour Suzuki GSX1100 black piper. I was 18years old and got it up to 260kmh before my sphincter
started to fribulate! - of course - this was not on a public road. I was on the race way of our Dairy farm.

I must be one of the few people that go faster in a car than I do on a bike.

I know all too well the 'need for speed', but for some strange reason I just dont have it on the bike - must be some kind of zen thing where I just enjoy the ride.

My fastest - probably about 160 - but that was only on straights where I was catching up to the rest of the riders on a Boulevard rally.

God - Im turning into a nana with old age.

Now do I buy into this "mine is bigger than yours" thread :shit: What the hell maturity is over rated!!

A few years ago on a spanish motorway, 3am with cool perfectly still air, a group of us wound up and up for miles until we started a gentle downhill straight approaching a Peage (toll booth). The "slightly warmed" T595 showed 180MPH on the clock.... but the radar at the Peage station showed 281Kph (175Mph) as the attendant explained in broken english that the police had just gone to get some dinner :shit:.

Taking a few minute to think what my holiday would have been like from inside a spanish jail I decided to slow down and now as recently as last year on the SH16 I saw a bunch of bikes on the back of a truck just beyond the police speed trap and a matching bunch of leather clad suicidal men  Taking it on the track... yeah taking it on the track... :Punk:

Well I'm a pussy. I've visited 220kph a few times on my Ducati ST4, for technical reasons......

That was plenty fast enough for me. The bike had other ideas but since it seemed a good idea for me to stay aboard, it agreed to gather in the horses.

To be truthful, I find it much more fun riding between 140 - 170k (on closed private roads Constable - honest :pinch:) and anything much above that causes excess tension in the sphincter muscles. :crybaby:

Yeah, shit hole of a place. Dusty, dirty and dry. The trucks come up so fast as you are going 2-3 times as fast as they are.

On one trip, I had a CHP pull into the gas station I was filling up in and the cop came over to me, shook his finger and said that I had better slow down. He said a few truckers had been talking about some guy on a bike. I just smiled and said I would.

Great fun really, and on the Busa, it was a dream ride. The bike would hunker down and just rip. I'd cruise at ~150 mph and the bike was maybe around 7500-8000 rpm. Not even breathing hard.

150-160mph.06 blade.
i hit a bit of a bump at this speed, and slid back on the seat:sweatdrop.otherwise i might have kept going.

must say,it makes me laugh to hear people say,"these speeds should only be done on track".
maybe that's true, but then why the hell do they ride the likes of 'busa's,or gsxr1000's on the road then?????

if they're trying to say they don't break the speed limits, then why do they need to upgrade from their 250's????:p a lot of those can break the legal limits.

on the current bike, 217 / 218 km/h ish, once, just to see what the result would be when the rev limiter kicked in at 6800 rpm.
i was of course drunk, it was of course a round about.

since then never been close ( well almost never ).

The Britten never had a tacho, did it? Was that on the limiter? Or is that from telemetry/recording stuff?

All my knowledge of the Britten comes from the Tim Hanna book - are there other good books or other sources for more info?

"Other good books", implies the one you have read was good...It wasn't! Piss poorly written, and way too much about the author himself. In a word, boring.

There's no real challenge in getting big bikes up to speed.

However I have fond memories of getting a TU250 up to an indicated 145km/h on the long downhill into Albany. Engine screaming, valves floating ...

Not in New Zealand (which is why GPS was set to mph not km/hr).

Jerry74
6th October 2008, 01:02
Too fast... my GSXR 750 piloted me up to 245 and that was enough for me....

RDJ
6th October 2008, 01:59
The equivalent of 286 km/hr was also enough for me - I was trying for 300 but decided against it; a spot of front instability was building up, and I had my helmet down on the tank as far as it would go, arms tucked in, wheels and tyres well balanced, windshield removed, and steering damper fitted; nothing more to do.

I would love to have an MVAgusta F4312 for a day just to have done the magic 300K... and yes I know it's just a number

Shit! I didn't know a sporty could even pull that kind of speed!

Gone well enough in speed to have an instant loss of license but it is well below the amount people here are often listing.

Quite different hitting high speeds on a cruiser though. Plenty of buffeting and throwing you around with it smacking you in the chest.
