No it's not the same, (it does the same thing-sort of) and if she specifically wanted the nano then she may not be happy with it....duno heres a link to it anyway http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/

ps, this is a new nano, there are also older ones but I guess this is the one she probably wants.

Why would I go backwards? (I'm not talking about brands/makes here, but quality/power).
I've posted more'n once that I've usually test-ridden several different bikes when I've bought a bike, and bought the one what "did it for me".

At the mo, I'm really starting to want to go back to a v-twin, but it'd have to be over 900cc. AFAIK, Hyosung don't make anything of that displacement.

Good job you posted the question Maha, apparently when daughters say I want a,pink ipod nano, that's exactly what they mean.

When you walk into a shop and Mr knowledgeable salesman says, don't buy one of those buy one of these , much better for the money, more reliable, bigger memory, better sound, she'll love it, you've to politely but firmly tell him to f#ck off cause your princess daughter knows best. These are the instructions I got from my angel after fookin up. Really mate, do as requested, it hurts less, mind you the two weeks of being ignored is pretty peaceful.

Word of advice don't buy this sort of thing from Parallel imported as if you have a problem with it they have to send them back overseas to be fixed. Of the normal channels Harvey Norman are selling them at the best price.

Get a nano if she asked for one. If she simply asked for an MP3 player, then you can get a better quality and cheaper one that has more features. You'd be ripped to shreds if you got the better product rather than the fashion accessory.

No No......its was a Apple Ipod nano in Pink she asked for, I just thought all those things were one in the same. I have been educated today, mp3's and ipods are not the same..they basically do the same thing (to me anyway) but are not the same.

My other Daughter wanted a new phone last month...I went to the local Vodaphone shop and asked about it. A Samsung Fantasy in Red!
They had never heard of it......turns out it is a Telecom Phone, when I looked in the website, its the same as mine!!! (but mines black/grey)

You have to remember that the dudty free shops at the airports have inflated prices anyway, so it's usually cheaper to buy locally. The exception to this is if you buy somewhere cheap like Hong Kong, but then the small amount you save is offset by no warranty.
We bought a cellphone there a couple of months ago, and saved maybe $30 over what we would've paid here at someone that does parallel importing, but the so-called international warranty is probably worthless, whereas the local dealers would've given us 12 months. However, it was only ~$200, so it's not a big loss if it carks it.

The only significant savings are on tobacco products and booze, and the latter is really only GST unless they have a 2-for-1 sale or whatever.

I've three iPods... they're ok, the batteries are shite though, and the iTunes software will make you want to do bad things to your arms with sharp knives, but you can do away with it easy enough. I just leave one on my desk at work, and one in the garage plugged into the stereo.

The difference between an Ipod and an MP3 player is an Ipod will become obsolete as a fashion accessory in a couple of months and you're forced to buy the new one to stay in vogue, though it'll most likely break down not too long after then if you decide to hang onto it. An MP3 player plays music well and has many more features for their price to entice people away from the Ipod, but fail to get the majority since the Ipod has been so heavily marketed. They're generally better built and aren't as likely to be scratched with a goose down feather. My MP3 player is a DSE one from Dick Smith's and cost me $30. Holds enough songs for a weeks worth of bus rides and I won't be too concerned if it gets broken.

That's a relatively cheap phone. You got lucky this time.

I here what you are saying and it makes good financial sense to get a MP3 rather than the iPod (to me anyway) but Sam is 18 and I guess if she was say, 10? I wouldn't spend $249 on a birthday present (Nov' 8th)so close to Xmas but shes doing so well out in the big wide world (well CH-CH) so its the least I can do.

A phone to me is something to call on and txt on, end of!
I dont use it for anything else. Mine cost me nothing cos' of the plan im on.
However, the one I got for my other daughter cost $199.

I made the mistake of buying a cheap transmitter for it so I could use it in the car or with my site radio. It immediately munted some of the terminals in the ipod. lucky it was only the transmitter applicable ones. Do not buy dodgy plug-ins from TM! Also there are some awesome ipod/mp3 stereos available.[For xmas, Maha!]

Winamp? I thought that had been canned, my version became inoperable anyway when there was all that fuss by Metallica etal. I had winamp back in the dark ages, was a great music stealer, but I only listened to music on the PC, never put it anywhere else.

Follow the link - winamp is still alive and kicking. I think you may be confusing it with winmx or napster though, as winamp doesn't 'steal' music - i.e. it's not download/file sharing software - it's primarily a media player (with a few more add-ons than it used to have though).

Winamp has is a terrible resource hog sure in the early days it was good but all went down hill from version 3 onwards. Itunes is not that bad using less than 2% of my CPU atm and 20mb of ram on vista. Ipods are fantasic MP3 players better than most easy as to use does what it says, has fantasic battery life and lots of features i will never use, at the end of the say what more do you want from a mp3 player? For what it is worth Mr Maha, in our house we have had at least half a dozen cheapish MP3 players and now 4 iPods (of varying ages and sizes, between the 5 of us).
The iPods are by far the easiest to use, the least problematic. We have had no trouble with any of them, where as the other MP3 players are all dead within a year or so (usually just beyond warranty).

My 1gb nano was our first iPod and I used it pretty hard for the last 3 years with no problem. I have just got myself one of the new series (16gb) so I don't keep hearing the same songs when away for a weeks hard riding (think Southern Cross type rides), but the 1gb still goes fine, I just wanted a bigger selection on it.

But then I'm no longer 18 and am not bothered about the fasion accessory factor.
I'm well past spending money I don't have, buying stuff I don't want, to impress people I don't like. :Pokey:

Edit: "They" will probably hit you up to extend the warranty, but I didn't bother figuring that it didn't cover anything that the factory 12 month one didn't, just extended it to 3 years for 1/3 the cost of a replacement.

I've been trying to like itunes but it just keeps on doing stupid shit that I can't find a way around. Maybe I'm too computer literate to use it??? Heck I even made an itunes account and gave them my credit card number, eek. Still yet to be convinced.

I have found mediamonkey (just yesterday) and so far so good. Seems quite a bit easier to use and has all the features of itunes, apart from genius (if you want to use it). The hardest thing I am encountering is a way to organise my 40gb+ music library into some sort of order to make it easier to use. Maybe that is my problem, a library going back 10+ years with tags all over the show. I vote for mediamonkey, haven't used winamp though.

Try this http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/ Got my new one at Noel Leeming a couple of weeks ago so they are in stock in NZ.
They have some clever gadgetry that senses which way you are holding it and turns the picture on the screen to make the long side horizontal or vertical accordingly. They also have a shake to shuffle songs function - just turn it off before you go for a run of it will drive you nuts.

''Yeah ok dad get that one''.....

I suppose these things are now pretty much obsolete with smart phones now being the communication/listening device of choice by the many?

The question has not been asked by either daughter but the answer will be a resounding no when/if it is. My own phone is a Samsung flip open thing. I really need to update, I know that and Anne says that new phones (iphones?) are real easy to use. No way in hell am I paying the kind of money they ask for a smart phone. In fact, I have not paid real money for a phone in years, being on a contract, there are generally free ones every now and then from Telecom.

I like the idea of those little speaker things you can sit your phone in and play music, but that's a smart phone thing right? I see them in action on work sites quite often.
I guess I could go talk to a Telecom sales person about it, but the speed in which they talk, it's hard to take it all in..

Suggestions on an iPhone for a first time caller?

It's increasingly difficult to get by without a smart phone.
Even if it's just for SMS security codes and stuff for online purchases.
It'll replace the credit card in meatspace next with finger scanners.

Even so, I hardly ever use it, so I bought a second hand iphone4 for $200. Company hand-me-down.

All I have to do now is remember to recharge it.

"Smartphones" now is actually pretty run of the mill now. Essentially it began as phones that could do more than just the typical phone calls and text messaging, and able to handle emails, browse web etc.

iPhones only really come in one or two current models. If you really want a cheap iPhone you'd have to get an older one, second hand. Apple controls the pricing heavily, so that's how you get one cheap.

However, your better bet is to go the android route. Think of it like operating systems like a computer. Mac or Windows, phones have iOS (Apple), Windows (mostly Nokia - but not all of them) and Android (Samsung, LG etc). Android is a little more complicated, but I find it's much more functional. You can also get android on a wide range of phones to suit all budgets. Exactly what you pick would be up to your budget and desire for features.

I bit the bullet and got a smart phone last month. Ended up getting the Sony Xperia Z. Awesome phone, has a full HD screen and shit.
Buy one just for the camera, the clarity is amazing. I can also plot all my fishing spots on a GPS map now and its water proof. My last 4 phones have been scarificed to posidien through various mistakes on my part.

Amazing bit of tech and im far from a phone guy. I would rather eat a shit sandwitch than buy apple though. Brought a IPod years ago, didn't like it and coconuts used to try and jump anyone wearing a pair of white headphones down New Lynn bus stop

Telecom phones on offer for $0 and a plan close to what I am paying now are…

Nokia Lumia 520 (Windows) Don't think I want this phone though.
Telecom T4010 (Android)
LG Optimus L5 II (Android)
Telecom Y300 (No Navigation option)
Samsung Galaxy Young (Android)

Any iPhones on offer, they want to extract $99+ per month from my wallet and I can’t see myself doing that.
I could stretch to a Sony Xperia M (Android) or a Galaxy S III for $0 and a slight increase to my current plan.

Get whatever has the features you want, at a price you can afford, that also has good Cyanogenmod support. Fuck using an OEM Android distro, unless it's a Nexus device as they're more or less vanilla Android.

Then root it and install WifiKill to do some epic IRL macfag trolling.

Just ignore this, you simply want to use the phone.

I only have experience with the S III from the ones you listed. It's a big phone, was Samsungs flagship last year. If you're OK with the size, it's the best of the list.

I know Telecom had the S4 and S3 on the same options as of earlier this week, so Dad was shifting to an S4 from a BlackBerry (redundancy means a BlackBerry is useless for him). They're in the process of adjusting the plans right now, going to $99 monthly and $99 for the handset, but he showed how everything is Telecom at home, guy spoke to manager, yep, OK, we'll give you the $89 etc.

Could be worth trying on... the S4 is now the flagship, just recently launched, you'd be the envy of all the floors :msn-wink:

I've flashed several different phones with Cyanogenmod, and they all have much better performance, improved battery life (sometimes significantly), and a more simple UI. I have had the odd bad flash, which only takes about 10 minutes to fix once the bootloader is unlocked. What's not to like about that?

I suppose these things are now pretty much obsolete with smart phones now being the communication/listening device of choice by the many? For the most part, yes. One value an MP3 player has for me is that I can leave it in the car permanently, does not matter if I leave it behind. They're also dirt cheap, so if the car is broken into, it's a minor loss.

I try to avoid smartphones... everyone that gets one ends up buried in it... but having said that they're a part of my working life, so I've seen a few. If I were to purchase one for myself now, it would be an android device fwiw.

It's a wonder it still goes to be honest, I will have to take more care of the new one I guess

Got a Sony Xperia Acro myself earlier in the year, seems to work pretty well but I struggle to get it to do what I want sometimes. Took me months to figure out how to use a song as a ringtone, for example. Anyone remember the computer game 'Myst'? It's a bit like that, I just keep pressing things until something works.

Seems the idea is everything is so "easy to use" these days that they don't bother with much in the way of instructions.

Come to think of it...that fella at the Vodafone store talked a lot of Egyptian as well :eek5: or some gobbledigook techie lingo resembling Egyptian :brick:
