There's a guy in Ashburton who's building a full size Spitfire replica in his lounge. He can't fit the wings & tail till they drag it outside though.

Replica is cool when you do it like this chap

http://www.fineartmodels.com/pages/product.asp?content_area=6&sub_area=139&product_area=139

Mostly self taught, built everything on it including things like valve springs, an addiction a passion!

wrt the spitfire, I would love to build a modern one using some CF/modern materials to get the look with some more performance.......

That's pretty cool, also love the 'thunder' mustang as well.

A young'n like myself didn't realize how big real P-51's/Spitfire's etc actually are.

I had better add that the Spitfire in Ashburton isn't being built to fly, although it sure looks like it could. The guy just wants to be able to putt around a paddock, giving his grandchildren rides etc.
I will post some pics when it's ready.

waaaaa we dont build them full size as the engines aren't around anymore.....

It took Pierre 15 years and more than 20,000 hours to build this car. He learned to make glass so he could make the exact pattern lens for the operating headlights. He learned to make rubber so he could mold his own tires. His computer mainframe design background with the French telecommunications system allowed him to duplicate the Ferrari electronics system in exact miniature

Close. But seriously the technology in a Spitfire is rather antiquated so it shouldn't be hard to replicate, or improve upon.

You can get a fully operative replica Spitfire kit built in Aussie for around $100K - it's about 90% of the original size, and powered by an Isuzu 3 ltr v6 (Bighorn) engine.
