Went for a pootle over the tuks today, martinborough then gladstone and finally masterton, those back roads are a great place for a noob such as myself to get a bit of confidence and really enjoy those gentle sweeping corners. I'd love to do the social thing a bit but i must admit the big boys are a bit intimidating... Where are all the noobs hanging out? i did'nt notice any "L" plates and saw only one other 250, anyone keen to form a L plate posse to hit the wai next sunday?

yeah, I' planning on getting one, but them bolting it on, then snapping it off so it looks like I put one on in case I get pulled over.
So to answer, us 250 people are in semi disguise.

Damn, I'd like to go with you guys again next sunday, but I have my kids that weekend (which is nice... but means little riding!) That sounds like a really good route to take though... hope the weather is good for it (like yesterday) - perfect!

Don't be intimidated they are the same as everyone else ... they probably rode 250s themselves once.
BTW: Next Sunday is the Cliffhanger speed events in Featherston ... will be a great place to meet other riders.

Pride dosn't get in my way, but the fear of a $400 fine does...I wear my L plate, always have. I have never seen another on a bike either except once when I was in the cage.
Would love to go for a ride but to be honest that ride sounds too long and my bike is already causing me some back pain after 20 minutes!

you should sell it mate and get a bike thats doesnt cause you pain - no point to ride a bike that makes you sore. isnt the gv250 an upright seating postion anyway? i'd reconend a vtr250 as a good comfortable bike - but with comfort its a personal thing so try a few out.

On reflection it probably is a little ambitious, was a bit keen yesterday as we had just come back from a great ride and i just wanted to keep going... We could all look out for each other in featherston next sunday and make decisions from there. :chase:I wear my L plate cause i like to be insured! pretty sure the insurance would be void if your not riding plated up (if you should be.. ) as for the comfort factor hubbies been riding the vl250 for a while (has a dodgy back) and reckons its v.comfy:clap:

Thanks. Its got more to do with the size of the bike, you see I'm bigger than your average 2 tonne bull and theres nothing in a 250 thats gonna be that comfortable. I have applied for an exemption to the size limit due to my size but also the safety issues that come with being on a small bike.

I understand your enthusiasm I love to ride too, being new just makes it even better IMO. Being insured is all important :niceone: Will see what happens next weekend, I'm off to phyiso this arvo so maybe after a week of that I might be able to ride with less discomfort.

Nup!
My dad worked in insurance for years and likes to debunk insurance rumors. If you have an accident the only factors that can 'void' your insurance are anything that actually caused the accident.
You could have no WOF, be naked and you're L plate could be on fire, but as long as those things didn't cause the accident, then you're covered!

I think that would depend on the insurance company, I know some would try to weasel out of payment by anyway possible.

Precisely what I have done.
I was thinking though, the cop could come back and say that it wouldn't snap of in 70km/h winds, so you must have been doing at least 100km/h  But hey, what proof does he have.

he could also say youre not displaying a l plate and give you a fine, its not his fault it snapped off

If you "behave" when riding then you aren't giving cops any reason to pull you over, so unless you are doing something dumb, there's little chance you would get a ticket. But remember occasionally there are compulsory stops with licence checks etc.
On the other hand if you are pootling along minding your own business and become involved in an accident caused by a third party who is uninsured, then your insurance may be invalid if you are breaching your licence conditions.
It would pay to check the wording of your policy. Mine states there is no cover if the rider is in breach of a condition of their drivers licence, and that that if the rider has a learners or restricted licence then all conditions must be complied with. So riding without your L plate, or outside the allowed hours, is a breach.
I chose not to have my L plate on, and I ignored the hours I was allowed on the road. I'd been driving for 20 years and wasn't going to be "told" that I couldn't ride at midnight (but I could drive my car).
I hadn't noticed before that my policy also says if you incur demerit points, traffic offence or speeding fine, the insurance company must be notified otherwise they may decline any claim.
Happy riding anyway.....get out on those 250's and explore! I finally got off my arse and got my full licence so sold my 250....but I do miss it as it was nice and light, with lower seat height.
