North KB's Kai-Iwi Lakes Campout
Me and RIB have decided to finally hold a KB event in the 'Winterless north'.
There are two rides planned for the weekend that revolve around the lakes, being the stop off point on the Sat night for a soak and sleep for the night.
Click here for more details on this event & to register your attendance on the calender (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=427&day=2005-2-26&c=1)
Please feel free to discuss any details here.

Yep, Ant and I are sticking our necks out as we decided it is about time you guys got you arses up here (instead of us). This is a two day ride with a camp over/BBQ/and BS night at the awesome Kia Iwi Lakes. Camping gear will be needed, but I will have the Ute down as far South as as the tea rooms on the AK side of the Brynderwyns for you to unload your excess gear onto. Food (drink) supplies can be picked up at Dargaville and put on the ute.
We will need to get an Idea of No. by the end of the week as we will need to book camping space by this Friday (11/02/05).
The ride plan for the Saturday roughly goes as follows:
9:00am: Meet up at Massey/Westgate Caltex.
9:30am: Depart Massey and ride via Old North Rd – Peak Rd – Kaukapakapa SH16 to Wellsford.
10:30am: Wellsford Caltex, regroup and meet any riders joining here.
11:00am: Depart Wellsford, ride SH1 to SH12 Maungaturoto turn off. Regrouping at the Brynderwyn Tearooms. My Ute will be here for those that wish to get rid of a bit of gear.
11:45am: Depart Tearooms and ride to Paparoa.
12:15pm: At Paparoa the ride can spit in 2.
Route 1: A longer ride to Dargaville (approx 105Km from Tearooms to Dargaville) with more twisties, going via the Pararoa-Oakleigh Rd on to SH1. Then down Loop Rd and on to Otaika Valley Rd through to Maungatapere SH14. Then to Dargaville. This route is recommended for the faster riders.
Route 2: This is a shorter straighter route (72Km from Tearooms to Dargaville) stay on SH12 via the Ruawai Straights. This is the way the ute will be travelling and is recommended for the slower riders.
All going well the faster riders going by Route 1 should arrive in Dargaville a little after the slower riders going via Route 2.
1:30pm: Regroup at Second Service Station West of SH12 and SH14 junction in Dargaville and then ride the Burger place on the turn off North for Kia Iwi and the Wiapoua Forest.
2:30pm: Having had lunch, we will head to Kia Iwi via SH12 (35Km), and set up camp there.
We should arrive at Kia Iwi before 3:30pm. After a swim there would be enough time to ride to visit Tane Mahuta in the Wiapoua Forest (50km from Kia Iwi).
Sunday I plan to take those who are kean up around Wiapoua Forest, through Opononi to Kaikohe. Down through my home Rd (Mangakahia Rd) , across and down Otaika Valley Rd. From there you will be able to head back home via SH1.

This ride will be awesome for learners and fast riders alike. If notified we could make arrangement for camping gear to be picked up, and/or a large tent hired/borrowed.

We stayed up that way this time last year - went to the Trounson Kauri Park...I was totaly blown away, never before have I seen a Kauri forest as it would have been thousands of years ago,it's nothing like Waipoua.I have always wondered how the birds could have lived in the dense secondary growth forests we see,let alone how the Maori could have coped in such conditions - the Trounsons Kauri park gives you an insight...it's so open, the mighty trees are spaced far apart, their huge canopies giving a cathedrial like feel...the birds fly! between the trees, the under growth has space to grow in it's own right...magic,totaly magic.
No,I won't be coming...there is a house that needs time and money buried into it,that's where my spare time is going at the moment.Pity...I coulda shown you all some very interesting roads between SHs 1,12 and 14.....and the longest beach in NZ,one day I'd like to fill my 20 litre Acerbis tank and go down to North Kaipara head.

wow, thats a great Idea - I MAY get to join you if I get a bike intime , But great roads around kai-iwi, and lots off fun when all the smelly city folk are not around :wari:
On another note, RIB did you give me a hand with my 'key incident' outside mitre 10 ahwhile back? (black ZZR250) never caught the guys name, but he saved me alot of fiddling :apint:

Would like to take a few the Broadwood way to Kaitaia. The Russel Rd is cool too. As for the MX dudes, I'd send them out the back of the family farm.

We need more interest in this ride for us to bother book the camp. So far only three people have reg'ed for this ride (2 of them are Ant and me). We need some idea of possible numbers by midday tomorrow so we can book enough space. At least some feed back would be appericated so that we may better organise an event next time.

Due to lack of responce to reg'ing for this ride, We have decide not to book the Kia Iwi Camping grounds (still bring you tongs but as we will still head for the lake). Ride up will still follow Route, but for those who which to stay over-night we will ride to my place. Beds will be available, but Sleeping bags would be helpful. Beers are already in the fridge as long as you don't mind Speight's Old Dark, Mac's Gold (might pick up the odd Woody for the Bourbon drinkers). For those who only want a day ride, I recommend Route 2 as the quickist way back South. Will post revised Map as soon as I get time.

Ant and I did a bit of route checking yesterday (Sat 12/02). The Pararoa-Oakleigh Rd (part of Route 1 roded quite well, so this is going to be the main route of the day (take Route 2 if you want to get bored).
Unless there is a bigger group coming from AK we will meet up at Wellsford Caltex @ 10:30am.
11:00am: Depart Wellsford, ride SH1 to SH12 Maungaturoto turn off. Regrouping at the Brynderwyn Tearooms (The Swinging Cow Cafe').
11:45am: Depart Tearooms and ride to Paparoa.
12:15pm: At Paparoa the ride will follow Route 1 to Dargaville (approx 105Km from Tearooms to Dargaville), going via the Pararoa-Oakleigh Rd on to SH1. Then down Loop Rd and on to Otaika Valley Rd through to Maungatapere SH14. Then to Dargaville.
1:30pm: Regroup at Second Service Station West of SH12 and SH14 junction in Dargaville and then ride to the Burger place on the turn off North for Kia Iwi and the Wiapoua Forest.
2:30pm: Having had lunch, we will head to Kia Iwi via SH12 (35Km).
We should arrive at Kia Iwi before 3:30pm. Take you tong because if it is fine you'll want to cool off in the lake.
After a swim there we will decide what evryone wants to do. There will be three main options depending on what the riders feel upto:
Option 1: Is to ride back via SH12 & SH14 to Maungatapere. Refuel there. Those that wish to return home split here (approx 80Km's from Kai Iwi). Those the wish to stay over, have a drink, etc (if someone has a cool DVD bring it as I have access to a Dig. Projector. I could also put any dig. pic taken that day) can ride back to my place down Mangakahia Rd (a mere 27Km via Route 3 from Maugatapere).
Option 2: Ride back via SH12 to Dargville and split there (this would allow AK'ers to take Route 2 back which is quicker for them).
Option 3: This is an approx. 170Km route through Wiapoua Forest and Opononi to Kaikohe, and then down my home Rd (Mangakahia Rd) back to my place to stay over night. This would put another 2 1/2 hours on to the day so unless the riders are very keen I would not be recommending it (we will see on the day).
Some feed back would be helpful.
Thanks
Doug

Pity I didnt see this earlier, why arent the auckland KBers in on this? I at least was on the Barrier, with no power, let alone a computer..... If the rest of you can post so much crap, why don't you put that sort of energy into this event, it sounds great!
You are all useless lazy barstards!!! :angry2:
I apologise on behalf of the rest of Auckland KB, this is embarrassing....
You are suggesting a big (possibly) day saturday and a sleep at your place on sat night right Doug?
I want to be in Auckland one of the afternoons of that weekend (though I would have changed it for the event in it's original form), and I'd definitely be up for it if I could be back in Auckland midday Sunday.... It'd make things easier for the organisation side of things....

Well normally I'd be in like Flynn for something up in the winterless north, been up at Whangas twice in the last week even, but I've already got Tickets to the NZ-AUS ODI on Saturday, and I've already organised a Stag do for my mate that same night, so I'll be in no condition or position to ride (a bike).
Just thought I'd make that clear...

Should only need the sleeping bag. Heaps of mattress in the Homestead (family name for the house I live in).
PS: Planet Honda has organised a ride from their shop in Whangarei to The Duke Of Marlborough Tavern on the Sunday (27/02/05). It was an awesome ride last year, so I would be keen to get to this. It only takes me 30min to get to town and the ride is down for 10am, so unless you guys have managed to give me 1 hell of a hang-over, I'll be heading for the door by 9:30am.

_darylMidges are the same as at any NZ beach (try the Westcoast SI for real Midges). As for 2 weeks in a row being excessive, you need to ride your bike more.

I will be meeting up with Ant 9:15 @ the Portland Turn-off, where we will head to Wellsford. Northland riders are welcome to ride with us down to meet any coming up from South of Northland. We hope to depart from Wellsford by 11:00am, so if you are not there by that time it would pay to head for SH1/SH12 Maungaturoto turn off. There is a planned regrouping at the Brynderwyn Tearooms (The Swinging Cow Cafe'). Those planning to meet the ride here should aim at being there by 11:30am as the 11:45am Depart was aimed at a larger ride to give enough time to regroup.

Great to see PT & Zapf making the effort riding up (hope more of you will not be to shy next time). Thanks Tiller for leading out on the Pap/Oak Rd. Thanks Kevin (a local GSXR750 ride that Tiller & I have riden with before) for giving me a pillion brake down the Maungakamea Rd and Otaika Vly Rd so I could show Tiller that I was not a total nana.
Special thanks to Ant & Jess for helping make this happen:niceone: Awesome Dude and Dudette, Enjoyed having you all here.
High light for me would be visiting Jess's Parents (not part off the organial plan but all taken in our stride and well worth it for the hospitality). Saturday Morning head to the Portland Turn Off to meet up with ANt and Jess. I was supposed to be there by 9:15am. Ant was getting worried and was just Txt me as I pulled up just before 9:20am:eyepoke:
Pinched his girl friend (Jess) and headed to Wellsford. Well this was the frist time I had had Jess as a pillion. You know how some cars have a warning beep if you go over a set speed, well I had this tightening feeling on my hips. As I got up to 90MPH this "squeeze" became more of a "Crush". Shit Jess can apply some pressure with her legs, thought my hip was going to snap:shit: Maybe she was trying to tell me something I thought. So I easied off a bit until we got to Wellford. There I found out that she wasn't telling me off but was worried she was going to fall-off the back and didn't want to put too much weight on the backpack rack:doh:
Zapf was the frist AK KBer to arrive at around 10:30. Then BigB turned up (good to see you again Big B sorry I have such a louisy memory I was trying to remember your name but couldn't:brick: ). Had not see him in a very long time. He was heading to Whg on a different mission, so once he had fueled he was on his way. Just on 11am PT truned up so, after a quick catch-up, we were off the Brynderwyns.
Having Txt'ed Tiller that we would be there by 11:20 we justed pulled in @ 11:30. He was there with Kevin. Kevin is a Whg rider that both Tiller and I have rode with in the past. He riders a grey GXR750 really well and would give most of our fast riders a run for there money.
Having sorted out want Jess's leg squeezes were about and having got off the Main SH, I started to show Jess some of what "Rox" was capible of down SH12 to Paparoa. this was hampered by unexpected road works (it was not there a fortnight ago) with full work crew just before Maungaturoto laying down some fresh tar and pea metal:blank: (put's Bugger on the sign).
At Paparoa we turned off down the Paparoa-Oakleigh Rd. Here I indicated to Tiller and Kevin to lead as they were more familiar with this road and a lot fast than myself (specially 2up).
To be continued:niceone:
RiderInBlack
28th February 2005, 10:23
Now this was an awesome road. Well worth taking instead of the SH1 if you have the time and are heading to Whg. Happily let Kevin and Tiller take the lead. It was not long before I got past by PT (followed a bit later by Zapf) on this medium twisty raod (hey I had a pillion I was responsible for). Turn towards Maungakaramea where we stop for PT to refuel.
Kevin (being the gentalman he is) kindly offer to give Jess a turn as Pillion on the back of his GXSR750. Promising not go any faster than Doug (me) on this rode. Well now de-pillioned I got ago @ showing Tiller that "Rox" and I are not total Nanas, and chased him down the road all the way to the Intersection with SH1:2thumbsup
Once off SH1 and heading down Otaika Valley Rd I soon took the lead again (Very familiar with this road and no pillion). I stopped and wait for Tiller where the 40KPH corner is (the one that often has pea-metal on the apex), before head on to Maungatapere. Here we regrouped @ the Maungatapere Service Station (so Kevin could show Pam, his wife, the pillion he had picked up). After we moved all the tyre kickers away from Pam's 250 (which she has for sale as there's a 400 she's got her eye on) and said good by to Tiller, the remaining troup ("Rox" & me, Kevin with Jess 2up (think she was enjoying that), Zapf, PT & Ant) headed for Dargaville on SH14.
To be Continued

I would be keen for more of northland rides and go even further north...

After tell everyone that I would be ride this next part of the ride bit slower than the last section as there is more likely to be a cop, I cruised off at what I thought was a sensible speed (80-90MPH) and soon found that only Kevin (on KB as nzkalt61) with Jess 2-up was behind me. Stopped opposite the Tangi Pub (Tangiteroria) waited for the other to turn up. Zapf didn't take too long and I waved him and Kevin to carry on. Well I should have had a beer:apint: while waiting for PT and Ant (maybe I overstated the cop thing:confused: ).
As soon as I saw them I moved off again trying not to put too much space between us, but in the end I started to get curious as to how far ahead Zapf and Kevin were now. Well I only just caught site of them as I hit the SH14 Dargaville Staights (between Awakino Point and Dargaville). We pulled into the Dargaville Service Station and wait for PT and Ant (they don't take too long this time:msn-wink: ). By this time It was well over due for lunch so we went over the bridge to Mangawhare (still part of Dargaville) and had lunch at Fast Food (yep that's what it was called:p ). Here Jess tells us that we have made Maungatapere to Dargaville (55Km) in 20mins:whistle: (so much for riding at a sensible speed hey).

Before we left Fast Food, Ant pointed out that I have a fuel leak (fu*k, fu*k, fu*k). "Roxanne" had got serviced last week and I had only pick her up from the shop on Friday. I have sent her back to the shop, were I have just found out that the tank plate for the mounting bracket has broken @ the tank (which is the cause of the leak). The shop is get a 2nd hand tank @ cost for me ($250) and hopefully will not charge for fitting it as they may have "assisted" with the bracket braking while servicing the bike (hey "Rox" aren't young so the bracket was probably going to go anyway). There was some damage to my fairings after return from the shop (I found that Sat morning and had to stablise them before going on this ride). I had rung them about that first thing on Sat before going on the ride. They are plastic welding these for me @ their cost (I'll repaint them as I have had to repair those fairings before).

After a very late lunch, Kevin had to leave the ride to get back to Whangarei in time for milking. This meant I had Jess again:whistle: . Who need “Old Men’s Day” (Billy Connolly) when you can have a hot young biker chick like Jess behind you. Boy Ant, you’ll be looking forward to your next bike so that them dirty old bikers don’t pinching your hot young biker chick:msn-wink: .
It was after 2:30pm and the weather was getting real hot:sweatdrop when we got under way again. There is a mix of easy bends and straight on this part of SH12 so Jess was getting to feel the power of “Roxanne” as this is her kind of road. On @ least one straight along here she reach 120MPH. There was the odd road repair but nothing to get too worried about.
Let the group re-gather at the turn off for Kai Iwi Lakes and then head down this road. It wasn’t long before I got past by PT down here (actually it was a little naughty of PT as the corner was a little blind).
It was around 3pm when we got to the lakes and it didn’t take us long to strip off and jump into the lakes. After hot leathers the lake water was just bliss:D The Lake temperature was so good that we didn’t feel like getting out and back into the bike suits. After quite a bit of mucking about in the water we remounted our trusty steeds and headed for the forest.

Awesome ride.It was really good down the paparoa oakleigh road,It was in alot better condition than when I rode it 3 or so years ago.Had a great blast down there.
Yeah RIB I noticed your headlight not to far back on the Mangakaramea road nice road that.
When we got on the otaika valley rd & I waved everyone past I was following kevin & Jess & a bird flew up under his front wheel & disapeared, it didnt pop out for atleast 1km or so.Poor thing must of had the ride of its life.
Wish I could have come over to the lakes but I had to help a mate bleed his clutch & brakes on his gsxr1100.
Oh well next time when hopefully we get some more KBers up this way.

Err yeah.... not a great moment, but I'd committed, so there I was.....
That and Roxanne was so bloody slow through the corners, but with enough grunt to keep me out on the "straights"

With "Roxanne" 2-up again we headed to Waipoua Forest. With the road relatively open here it was easy to keep the smaller bikes behind me, but I knew that would all change as soon as we got in to the forest with it's tighter twisties. It was not long in the Forest before I got taken by PT. In fact with the tight blind corners, the occational pea-metal and being 2-up, It was not long before I had even let Zapf and Ant past. Not to woory as soon as we clear the Forest (I throught) we'll pick them off again. This didn't go quite to that plan as the was some freash seal on the other side with still some pea metal in the apexs (what pea-metal said PT when we stopped next:confused: ).
Clear of the pea-metal and with the odd straight a long Waiotemarama, the threesome of Jess, "Roxanne" and myself (always wanted 2 girls at once:niceone: ) soon pick the boys off one by one. Up the hill and round the corner and there in front of us the Sand Dune at the enterance of Hokianga Harbour just "POPPED" in to view (always starteling how it does that:gob: you fell like your going to end up in the harbour as you come up that corner).
Regathered at Opononi and got instructions on how to get to Jess's parents' house.
