i know its illegal but how illegal is it?the posties do it on thier ct110s and now in auckland theres this new crowd who use them to ride along footpaths and verges picking up rubbish with these prong things,so do they have exemptions or do the police turn a blind eye to them?a worker in the same industry as me(courier)rides 10metres up a footpath and gets slapped a fine and loss of licence for 3 months

I utilise footpaths and whatever it takes to "make progress". The experience of your courier friend is somewhat concerning though...

My boss told me we're the only ones allowed on the footpaths, even the posties aren't. I'm one of them litter collector people, our company only got the contract from Auckland City Council a few weeks ago so it's a new thing. They've been doing it for years out in Waitakere City though. Many police have driven past me cruising around on the footpath and some even smile and wave.

Yep! If you see an Asian guy it'd be me, haha. We don't have the flags, and I stopped wearing the yellow rainsuit this week, it got way too hot wearing them and as well as keeping the rain out, they keep the sweat in! We're required to have the fluoro vests on though.
I saw a CBR cruising around last week around Richardson Rd or Hendon Ave or something (I think) when I was doing that area, that wasn't you was it?

Yep Civic Contractors, I did Broadway for a few days, always before or around 9am though, so there weren't many shoppers at that time, mostly schoolkids. Civic Contractors actually got permission from the council to do this, at least out in Waitakere City anyway.

Proposal 4, seems its being blind-eyed at the moment as i presume this would cover it in future...

In our little town (and in many others I see) bikes are regularly parked in all sorts of pedestrian areas. They didn't just fall there out of the sky, so I happily ride on the paths when thats the way in or out. I wait for a lull in the pedestrian traffic and ride the clutch (walking speed) and if a person walks in front of me I stop and give way to them. No one ever looks twice at me, except to say "nice bike."

Like the 160KPH, or the pedestrians that got mowed down?

well read it somewhere that the palmerston north paper girls-boys were been fired...lol..and a total of nine scooter riders were to deliver the newspaper by motorcycles... so theres another group that will be belting around on footpaths...wrong i reckon...don't mind cyclist's schoolkids on footpaths but motorcyclist...no

I don't reckon it's a particularly big deal (but I've ridden on footpaths a few times..., and have often parked on them). How many accidents do you hear of from people being mown down by a postie or delivery person on a scooter? It's very common to have posties on CT110s in Oz, and doesn't seem to be an issue.
However, apart from parking, I think my use of footpaths to bypass a traffic-clogged piece of road are over; I didn't enjoy falling off last time I tried it (lost the front wheel on the damp grass and faceplanted on the footpath). :o
In my defense, my brain was ferkt at the time.

Hey, stay off the footpaths - the crazy boy racers around where I live use them when drifting goes bad. Surely the tossers in Nissan's have right of way or ownership of sum'thin'?

I've been pinged for riding on the footpath a few times. Being creative - walking speed.
'Not keep within prescribed lane' or similar was the offence.
Slap on the wrist - no points.

the posties here use scoots on the footpaths. the nz posties use the c???? whatever its called, and the locally owned posties use proper 50cc.
ive ridden on footpaths a couple of times, but only between driveways. never for more than a couple of meters, and always at a walking speed with feet down ready to stop.

When communiting a while ago I used to regularly drive through the intersection beside the central police and then jump off quickly, walk down the footpath through the alley way and jump back onto bike on the road on the other side. Was onced asked what the hell I thought I was doing, when I replied "walking" the cop just, sensibly said with a grin "stop taking the piss, or I'll take some of your hard earned cash". Thought that was fair enough :nono:

I don't. I think he'd have to twist some laws to get a conviction for that.

Ive use the footpaths, you know to go from a house to the road and back. Could allways make my way usually without the need to go up onto a footpath but if there was an accident and I was on my enduro I would not think twice about it. Cant say it would be wise to make it a habit unless you had business being there, like delivering something. I delivered fish and chips in my teen years and was never given a look at by the Ploddies for being up on the footpath although I had the bright vest and insulation box on the back of the bike. Both had the name, address and phone number of who I was working for so it was obvious of what I was doing. Its a sign of the time with revenue gathering me thinks. Plus Im sure there are some eggheads out there doing silly stuff on footpaths that has made the issue come to light as it has.

There's this one bit on Parnell Rd, heading towards Parnell from Newmarket. Before the Ayr St/Domain Drive traffic lights. Just on the corner of Maunsell Rd if you want to be specific.
Heavy traffic during rush hour, cars often all the way back to the Newmarket roundabout. You can split on the left of the cars all the way up to where Maunsell Rd joins, you could fit a sidecar down there, heaps of room. But then there's this parked car just before Maunsell, and there is no way in hell you can fit a bike there.
Thankfully, there's a driveway just before -- you don't even have to hop the curb. Over the footpath for two metres, around the car, then you're on your merry way.
Got stopped by a motorcycle cop. He told me I was a filthy horrible person for doing that; instead I should hit the killswitch, get off and walk it around. Then he won't ticket me if he sees me doing it again. Nice mirror and clip-ons, by the way.

tossers in Nissan's
We not all tosser's, those of us that drive 'souped up' Nissans and not all 'boyracers' drive nissans either and those of us that do have nice cars that look like boyracermobiles arn't always boys (or racers for that matter).... good stereotyping for the minority of people that do the bad stuff in cages though:Pokey::girlfight:
And myself being a Postie, most of the motorcycle runs are in little suburbs on the outskirts of town where there is reasonable gap between letterboxes, but not sufficient enough for an RD round. Well thats here in little 'ol Dunedin anyways:cool: Must be different in other citys though by the sounds of it?

my town, they use the scoots in the suburbs. nz post also uses push bikes as well. not sure if it makes a difference if the route has a hill in it or not though.

Oh ok. The push bikes are only used on the flat runs. Hilly runs are for walking posties or bike posties :)
