with the deep snow and sub-zero temps all winter it makes it hard work, but i just put appropriate tyres and clothing on and go for it. in the summer, it's just shorts and t-shirts

If you road all year round in Ireland then you shouldn't have too much trouble here. (it depends on what part of NZ you are coming to though)

At least we don't salt the roads here like they do in the UK apparently.

Auckland and the upper north island is just fine for year round riding.

Is this a trick question? Why would one own a bike and not ride it? (Apart from those times that it's all alone in a big dark cold crate on its way to or from Los Angeles)

Mine is my commuter vehicle too - so I ride 6 days a week all year. Baring holidays :)

I think the pole is going to be misleading re the general population - KBrs are probably more dyed in the wool, but given the steep drop off in bike accidents during the winter it's only fair to assume the majority don't take it out of the shed unless it warm and not raining (much).

Mind you they still manage to find rogue bulls, dogs, a "big bird", a goat and even a kangaroo they can collide with.

There are few places in Un Zud where you can't ride all year round. A few roads in the Souf Oilund or in mountain areas or ranges are too icy at times to be safe to ride on in mid winter, and Dunedin can get pretty icy too. Although Christchurch can have snow, it's usually neither deep not long lasting. When I lived there, I tried to ride every day, and the only day the weather made it impossible was when there was black ice on the roads (found out after I set off :shit:). Even in winter, you should be able to ride on all but a few days. None of this Mrkn/Yurpeen "park the bike up for 4 or 5 months" nonsense.

Thats great to see most use their bikes all year round. Here in Ireland the weather can be pretty wet and we get alot of "fair weather bikers" so thats why I stuck in the only dry weather option. Im planning on living around the bay of plenty area so should be pretty good weather wise and hopefully just going to have my bike as my only transport.

of course it is - its all about situation and appropriateness. I can because of my circumstances - yours may well be different.

I don't actually subscribe to "dedication" to biking. I ride for enjoyment - nothing else.

As long as you enjoy riding then its all good!

an ex in canada cant ride for 6 or 7 months of the year due to the snow. he made that mistake once on a 65 harley, and basically had to strip and rechrome EVERYTHING due to the salt on the roads. hes got 3 bikes [one not roadworthy]. we did go out once towards the end of the winter, and it was lovely, but i wouldnt want to do it in full winter. too slippery.

myself, i ride year round. that would likely change if we got snow, but it would be for my safety, not lack of nuts. generally it gets used daily, but sometimes ill opt to be a passenger in the missus' car if i cant be bothered suiting up and playing taxi [very stressful with a pillion. i prefer solo] i love the wind... great fun! had several gusts that nearly sent me off the road, but then im a stubborn bitch and aint about to let some stupid gust ruin my ride. bit different when your trying to turn left and you get blown right instead. when i first started riding, id go to the foxton strait just to have some fun with the wind and get some practise.

well we have 9 bikes, one car and a house ... House! You were lucky to live in a house! We used to live in one room, all twenty-six of us, no furniture, 'alf the floor was missing, and we were all 'uddled together in one corner for fear of falling ... There were a hundred and fifty of us living in t' shoebox in t' middle o' road ... cardboard box ? You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t' mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep wi' his belt ....

LOL, likewise. We have 3 adults in our house, at the start of this year had 3 cages, now 1 cage & 2 bikes. Although my better half just got her 6L, so it might soon be 1 cage & 3 bikes (we have to have a cage to take these two little gremlins around. Nasty little beasts. For some reason the call us mum & dad)

Who is the soft cock who rides only when it is dry???

Before I got the scooter I thought that I would use it whenever the weather was good and probably take the car when wet. Only I had forgotten that I hate trying to get around Auckland in a car when it's wet even more than when it's dry. I have spent thousands on gear to allow me to ride all year long regardless of weather.

Damn right!
Commuting in winter is even more enjoyable as there is even more cage traffic and less bikes in the 2a lane!

Not afraid of riding in really bad weather but don't see the requirement. Bikings fun and expensive so if I'm not having fun I might as well save myself some money and take the car. Commutings a different story I guess but I don't have to do that cos I live at work.

Of the 6 months I have owned my bike, and almost 4 months I have had my licence, I seem to have racked up almost 7000km's.

I thought that wasn't too shabby, actually.

I commute on the bike every day and ride in any weather, except in gale force winds or when I know there's ice on the road. We need a "12 month/all the time" option in this poll!

Couldn't agree more. Why keep a bike for the nice days when riding in the rain is so much fun.:niceone:

Oh no, I hope you realise just how irresponsible you are then. Just think of all those poor people who have driven off the road by being distracted by you in your gruds!

Now now boys!

Oh, and btw, here in tropical Dorkland we have the pleasure of riding year round (and that's just because of our city's love affair with one person per car!)

Well said Tank and I agree 100%. For me getting a wet ass and being in wet or damp clothes at work for 8-9hrs just to be a hard arse biker doesn't make any sense. Ya go out to the garage to go to work and it's pissing down with rain. Ya stand in the doorway and look at
A. the 4wd with a roof a heater and a dry ride or
B. the Bike. Completely open,no protection from the rain and a wind chill factor of -15degrees @ 100km/hr.
 Bit of a no brainer me thinks.
The 4wd wins hands down every time.:niceone:

Not a lot of enjoyment in having chilblains on Ya nob I shouldn't think.
FAIR WEATHER RIDER TO BE SURE!!!!
Softcock but no chilblains.

I'm from Scotland and I live in the coldest part of New Zealand. The weather here is much milder than Ireland. The seasons are Spring, Summer, Autumn, Spring, Spring, Summer, Autumn, Spring.

I piss myself laughing when I hear kiwis complaining about the weather (when there's nothing to complain about!) then talking about whinging poms  cracks me up.

I don't have a car. I have a 50cc 2T scooter for commuting and a Ducati for the weekend (or for when the weather is wet - Ducati has brakes, tyres and suspension I trust)

All year round wet or dry.
Case in point : last weekend. On sunday I rode from Wellington to Taumaranui and it was stunning weather...the next day I rode from Taumaranui to Auckland in atrocious weather. The rain was so heavy at times it was almost a white-out...
My mate was trying to convince me to stay another night rather than ride in the storm.
I just shrugged and said "its only rain".
