View Full Version : MotoTT Trackday 7 December- who is going?

MD
25th November 2008, 19:03
I'm surprised there has been no chatter about this trackday?

Since the Nov 22 day was sold out I booked in for 7 Dec. It's a shorter track I know but still fun.

So are many going? I've also booked in for the Triday event January 18. Woopee, twice on Taupo within 6 weeks! :2thumbsup

I had to skip it due to commitments, but I'm sure many of the other regulars will be there. Track 2 rocks.

Don't forget the half-day MotoTT trackday on Track 1 on the morning of Scrivy's BADD endurance race on 29 Dec (for $40, you get 40 minutes of track time slotted in between the practice sessions).

About time Allan/Alan/Allen/Eileen (I know one's close)
I'm easy to spot. Sort of a cross between Brad Pitt and George Clooney. You know them? That's Brad who lives just out of Invercargill and George Clooney from Patea.

Yeah, track 2 is good. I've ridden my 636 on track 2 and also the full monty. Well the full monty that had a real tight right-left chicane to exit the new track and join the old track. I think the pansies have by-passed that chicane.

How will I spot you, what bike are you riding these days?

Mark
ps- I went for group 2 because I heard the Mutards are a nuisance in group 1. What group do you ride?

Quasi- I might need a new pair of knee sliders. If you have any please bring them along if you see this in time. I'm not keen on the expensive unobtanium ones though.

Other than that, the weather forecast looks shit hot. Bike's all polished with a shiny new front tyre - I even buffed the tyres with my special rubber shine compound of diesel, grease and 10/40 oil to bring up a great moist look (that's a joke by the way - just in case someone on here actually tries it!)

Looking forward to a weekend in Taupo.

Some of us well..ME and 3 others, owe the MotoTT crew a big thanks for bailing us out when we turned up with worn out brake pads.
All that hassle of hiring a trailer, driiving for 4 and 1/2 hours overnighting the family in a motel, lots of spending, new tyre, only to be rejected at scrutineering!

Must admit brake pads is something I just don't think about. Doh. Anyway the MotoTT crew shot into town and came back with a box of assorted goodies and got all 4 bikes fitted.

So remember to check your rego, wof and stuff BEFORE leaving home.

Track days are a great leveller of egos. I did 2 sessions in group 2 then decided I should move up to 1 for the next 3 sessions. There I was thinking I am a reasonably fast rider, but a track day reminds you that there are plenty of faster lads about. Kornholio and his mate Fish showed me that - good to meet you Guys. Then there was the fly-by by Shaun as I was passing a bike this flash goes between us and was gone in seconds! Impressive stuff Shaun. It just shows the difference between, what you think is a fast stock road bike, and what it can really do when properly set up and in the hands of an expert.

It was my first outing with a Conti-Race Attack Street on the front. Fantastic grip and it hasn't worn that much considering how hot it was yesterday.

That track is so tiring - but in a fun way Left, right, left, right, right, left. You seem to be forever in a turn.

Cheers again MotoTT for another really well run track day 

Gotta say that the 15 minute sessions were great when trying changes on the bike ‘cos we get more of them. 20 mins gets a bit tiring too!

Ended up changing things pretty much every session, and although didn’t really get faster during the day due to lack of confidence in a shagged front tyre, I think the bike ended up better for it, still holding a nice line but now also very stable under brakes.

Thanks heaps Shaun for your advice on the day!

Was ready to put the high bars back on by the 3rd session lol friggin hard work for a fat old bastard that shit is, wasn\'t even lasting the 15 minutes till the last couple of sessions, felt like i was using my palms as hammers !
Started getting the ass off the brute a little more though, which is great !
Couple o things left to do, like good rubber and suss the front suspension and then its all down to confidence and track time !
Think i must have been starting to speed up a little by the last session as i didn\'t have the whole field lap me by the end of it !

This was the first time I've been marshalling that the recovery vehicle wasn't needed once!
So well done all the riders for allowing a smooth day. Although there were a couple of "offs" they all managed to ride off the track. I'll let them tell their stories.

Cool, I didn't realise it wasn't used.

My story:

I fell off in session 2! First time I've binned the sv650s. I'd made new footpeg riser plates to move the pegs further back and up, I think it's good to have them further back, but maybe they're a little high for my knees.
Anyway, I was having heaps of fun in session 2, new I was pushing me and the rear tyre's limits a bit, it warned me with a couple of slides, one was quite big on the second to last lap on turn 5. I continued the lap, saw the checkered flag indicating last lap, was thinking about passing the bike in front of me in turn 1, was a little wide, the back started to slide, I tried to correct it and I was sliding off the track on my back...
Looking at the video now, it looks like the back lost traction then re-gripped as I tried to correct, but then the front wasn't up to it and let go as well.
Here's a video of the turn 5 slide and then the turn 1 bin:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/h1zOCxxhhio&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/h1zOCxxhhio&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The Motoslider crash bung did the job well, the only damage was to the gearshift lever tip (it broke off) and a bit of scratching on the tail fairing and swingarm bobbin (and a tiny bit on the front fairing that might just polish out - although I still need to finish painting them before I polish them anyway...).

Thanks to Gah/NinjaBoy lending me his cordless drill etc I replaced the gearshift lever tip with a bolt and was ready for the 3rd session.
I took it fairly easy in the third session, but towards the end the bike started hesitating accelerating on the back straight, so I exited at the pits worrying something was wrong, experimented in the carpark and it did it again, but then seemed to clear itself up, so must've been something in the carbs or something. Too late to go back out in that session though. But I had fun in the last 3 sessions (15 minute sessions are a good idea on the short track!). I was purposely not pushing it as much as the second session, didn't have any more slides, but was still happy with my riding, I think I was getting the apexes better than at the last trackday.

So it's looking like I need stickier tyres. Kiwifruit and Peter Harkess recommended Dunlop GPR10's, Chris Mitchell said Metzeler M3's. I've got some decisions to make what to do with my current tyres (Pirelli Diablo Rosso on the front and Diablo on the back) which still have a fair bit of life left, and also wondering if I should look at getting a van because I'm worried the 290km trip to and from the track will destroy sticker tyres even faster than it's wearing out the rear Diablo. Plus there's suspension upgrades and I want to make new footpeg riser plates etc etc. All good fun, just wish I had more time to do it.

Here's some footage from the second session of the yellow group (starts part way into the session):
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/qSVb-fHsU0k&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/qSVb-fHsU0k&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Anyway, thanks again to MotoTT for an excellent day!

Yeah mate she was there in all her glory !

Yeah man she was there looking fabulous :shake:

Yes it was a great day.... the worst injury, other than a carpet burn on a hornet riders elbow ! was something in Toby Summers eye!! Well done everyone for keeping it clean.
Thank you again to our marvelous Goblin... have a great time on those wonderful roads down south, and to Matt Bleck and Kiwifruit for your patience and guidance on the 'Lines Bikes'.

The Motott team really appreciate the great feed back and comments and help received from the Kiwi Biker community.

Have a great Christmas everyone and may Santa bring many bike bits....
Sue

Yes, Thanks Sue and the MotoTT team for another awesome day :D

Yes, Thanks Sue and the MotoTT team for another awesome day :D

As all have said, it was a "great" track day. Chris gave me a couple of laps of lines-training (thanks mate) and some other guy gave me a very useful piece of advice on body position.

Putting the lines-stuff and the body position together, I reckon I shaved at least 20 minutes off my next lap time. :--))

And watching Chris orchestrate the replacement of sundry sets of brake pads while getting the rest of the show on the road, was purely awesome.

You're legends, MotoTT.

Great day yesterday, although i had to keep telling myself \"slow down to go fast\" every time the procession filed past me and i\'d try to chase only to screw up the next corner, ah well lol
Oh wait had you guys all left by then ?

After our 'chat' as I was breaking camp, I thought about what you said about your gut. Seems to me we share a similar shape in that area, but the leathers and back-protector tend to act like a girdle.

Here's a bit of the advice I was given. Don't worry about shifting your arse. Lay on the tank, get your shoulders into the corner, inside knee bent, then get your head down. Your arms must naturally bend.

That way you simply cannot stiff-arm the bars and, therefore, you will have no weight on them; thus better control.

Why am I telling you this, since you want to relieve me of some scotch?

Oh well. A man has to pass on what a man can pass on without too cruelly jeopardizing his chances.:--))

Worked for me, brother!

Yeah was having a bit of a yarn with Grant , runs true and tells no lies, not in them words so much, but i think he's happy with the bike !

Now come on David, was that piece of advice passed on to you before or after your wee nap in the first round lol ?

I must say i'm actually enjoying (well i was by the 5th session) swinging the body off the bike a bit, so have done a sit up today hehe ! I recon by the next summer series i might have more than one abb ! Nah will have to do some work in the fat dept. Even did a couple of push ups on my spare bars trying to strengthen the palms up haha, yeah i know, elbows should stay bent but yrs of bourbon premixes says i'm falling on the lowwww clip ons !

New rubber and race pads should be on in the next day or so ! Will add braking markers to my list of learns for teusday, see how quick i can pull her up with the new pads ! The stock pads were blueing up my discs so they had to go !

Funny thing. I wandered over to these 2 Guys having lunch beside a white race prep'd 675 to ask if it was theirs. No it wasn't. We chatted for a minute, then as I walked off I noticed the other bike next to them had J-Lo on the tank. Wow that bike looks just like ...no, no it can't be. Must be a common name for Suzooks.
Look on the bright side. They didn't wreck it, that I know of.

You mean they didn't fuck the paintjob... I can't imagine that any of that bike's innards are still even remotely healthy.

Either try some of the new BT016's (just got some, they feel good), or get your hands on some metzeler racetecs. Bridgestone BT090's might do the job too. The GPRa10's dont come in a 120/70R17 front, only 120/60.

Bit hard trying to find good solid 160 rears.
If you feel like changing your tyres beforehand (and get a trailer). I might be able to throw a set of used slicks your way.

Another tyre to add to the list... As I guess you know, the sv650 is supposed to take a 120/60 on the front, I switched to the 70 profile because the 60 was getting to the edges before the rear tyre. I wonder if the same thing would happen with a GPR10 60 section or if they might have a steeper curve on the side? The old front tyre was a Diablo.

Thanks for the offer. I think I might stick with what I've got for now and just try to stay within the tyre's limits and improve other aspects of my riding. My next trackday is the kiwitrackdays one on the 23rd Dec, then holidays and no trackdays until the 16th/17th january so I'll do some road rides. Maybe I'll pm you about the slicks if I get myself a van before the 16th.

So it's looking like I need stickier tyres.

Based on reputation, I reckon the GPR10s'd be the go for you. I don't think M3s would provide high enough absolute grip levels (Chris just says 'M3s!' in response to any tyre question, you know that, right? Not that they're not awesome.)

That save of the slide in T5 was mint! Lovely riding there dude.

Yeah, well. The new Scorpion pipe, and the extra three teeth in the rear will see me hoving up close to you fucking straightline knob jockeys, on the day.

I know where you both (you and Random) suck, but I have to figure out a way to get to your sucky point.

I will. I'm a persistent little bastard. :--))))))

That would be somewhere other than where the gap between your and my lap times on track 3 was bigger than the gap between mine and Biggles08's, I'm guessing?

You're a braver man than I am. I have no plans on smack-talking Marcus any time soon.

I also suspect that a few people will be interested in Betty's dyno charts at the end of next week. Top tip: she doesn't make as much power as you think she does.

I have no reservations about where i will be in the field (if my licence is here by then) on the day ! Gentleman rider i am, there is no doubt !
But i'm hoping that will be well forgotten by lap 2 (one has to think positive aye) of the first race (we will see) and i've deliberately cancelled my dentist app, so if i do happen to find that bit of mongrel out there, you won't just be feeling me breathing down your neck !

Now that IS something i have thought of haha, a tiki tour through napier is def on the cards to ride the rollers in the very near future !
I hear Nigel out there is not much of a talker, but does know how to get every nag available from a Triumph !

Hey ho, here comes the first excuse, "My 1400 delivers only 5,000 BHP! No wonder I'm going so slow!' :--))

And, I see Willie is going to start throwing his false teeth at me!

BTW: I scored a birth at the Bernard training day (at Manfield) on the 16th. That should see me shaving another 10 minutes of my lap-times. :--))

I wonder if you realise that your endless attempts at trash talking are actually rather annoying and offensive?

A little politeness and humility goes a long way.
