Was sitting at a takeaway bar owned by some friends this weekend and thought about all the places I'd stopped at along the road. I can't eat at Maccas (food's krap and the packaging is more nutricious) so I like to stop and indulge my passion for Cheeseburgers from burger bars in small towns.
Thought I'd mention my mates shop in Hampden and see where else you like to stop.

Yep, the new owners have been in there for about eight months now and Lockie prides himself on his fish:yes:

In Whakatane theres a fish and chip shop right on the rivers edge. Theres a public carpark out front, BUT you can park around the back right on the waters edge, and there are table and chairs set out there usually.

It's the middle light-blue roof building in the picture below. Ride through the carpark and note where the front entrance is, then scoot around the building on its southern end (past the restaurant) and down a bit to the tables and chairs outside the fish and chip shop. Its a great place to park up for lunch and the food isnt too horrible either. You wont fit more than six or eight bikes in there though.

The Whanga Pub
Good food, good beer, and plenty of locals and visiting bikes for entertainment while you're consuming them
But if you've done the Forgotten Highway ride you already know that.
And the Sugar Juice Cafe in Opunake is a top stop with great food and coffee during a round Mt. Egmont ride.

A few of us down here are coming up to do the loop as part of a bigger ride around febuary next year, is there anywhere in Whitianga that you'd recommend to eat that's got a nice view ie: shore line or marina etc..

Clifton cafe, Clifton. Out from Napier not far from Cape Kidnapper's.
Great views and good food, only thing is it's pretty expensive but it's at least worth a visit once or twice if you're in the area.

Anywhere on the road mate. New Zealand has heaps of possum road kill. Just got to watch for other traffic while you're eating. Good idea to have a look out for plenty of warning :)
Seriously, you can't beat the Coroglen for a good feed when doing the Coro loop :)

No joking... you can get "road kill" tucker at a place called Pukekura, which is about 20 km's south of Ross, which is on the West coast of the south island...
If its fly-blown... they serve it with rice...

Places to eat, not things to eat. I figured that out when I was a puppy.

Now, this is my kind of thread.
In my travels I have found far too many places to pull over and eat (and have the waistline to prove it)
My reccomendation is for anyone heading through Tirau in need of a brekkie / brunch. Opposite the big dog is a bright Orange cafe (sorry, name escapes me) that does the best bacon, eggs, hash browns and other brekkie essentials that (very little) money can buy.
Usually make this a stop if I'm caging it to Taupo, Rotorua or Napier
Right, I'm off to have a pie the size of Rangitoto.....

Out here on the rural rump we ain't got no poofta "personnel access covers".
Those things are called manhole covers.
What some people do to the English language!
There are/were great fish shops at Tynwald and Akaroa, although you have to allow for the funny fish the South Islanders eat...
Kaiawa has a justly renowned hash foundry.
A personal favourite (not fish and chips) is the Kaieto Cafe on SH43. The owners are bikers, married in leathers on the InterIsland ferry no less.
In recent years a new cafe appeared on SH39 which was very nice. I can't remember if it's at Pirongia or Whatawhata but it's opposite the Memorial Hall.

Filadelfios (http://www.filadelfios.co.nz/) in Oamaru. In the old town area. Went there one evening and great food, friendly staff, and they even bought out some cloths and cleaning fluid for us to clean our visors!

I hear tell freshly bowled possum is good. Available on most country roads with a side dish of pukeko and puha.

Good choice for a coffee and food on the "back road" from Ngaruawahia to Otorohanga is the Persimmon Tree Cafe at Pirongia.
Outside seating, views of Mt. Pirongia, nice!
