At the risk of sounding a little 'Über-techy', just from the 'desktop' thread, I was curious to know how many mac users are KBers too.. I'm assuming everyone is on PCs with a light sprinkling of macs around.. Just wondered who had been enlightened with the fruit technology, and what you've got and why...?

to kick off, I've got a G5 dp2 at work (graphic designer and general mac monkey) and a 1ghz iBook at home. Hopefully be savin for a mini at the end of the year for the RevB model and Tigger too. I've got an APExpress plug, but haven't got it plugged up yet. Still waiting for DSL to be hooked up at home..

ooooo - you make me sooo jealous! I'm a big Mac fan, but like the most of us monkeys with put up with Windows crap in the office and are just too lazy to use anytihing else at home.

I used to have a Mac but went over to the dark side when I decided to build my own home PC. But I'm positive that once the latest home PC dies a death, I'm back to Mac.

I guess I grew up with pc's. When I was getting into them, there was hardly any software for Mac's, and it proved to be too much hassle. So, I guess thats what made me a pc user. I have heard that the new Mac's are powerful machines, and software nowdays is freely available, so there's no real reason to be one or the other I guess. Except, aren't Mac's immune to most viruses? That would be one great advantage.

Can you run things like Linux on Mac's?

BW G3 350mhz and 20" G4 iMac and a PC (1ghz - it's slow compared to the BW)
Work: 23" G5 Dual as my Mac. 25 Macs in total. 5 PC's.

Prefer Mac's, but will use whatever is the best for the job.

Work as a scientist at Otago Uni, where 75% of the people use mac's for work. Started using mac's when I was a student then wouldn't use anything else as I found them so user friendly and didn't crash as much. People keep giving me their old mac's for free so i'm not complaining.

I have the following:
Borrowing a Powerbook G3 400 MHz at work until my mac mini for work turns up.
G4 1.42 GHz mac mini - at home as a server
G5 1.8 GHz SP 1+ Gb memory - My home computer
iMac G3 333 Mhz - my old home computer
iMac G3 original - someone gave it to me for free and lots of software they
were going overseas
G3 beige horizontal tower - free
LCIII - my old old home computer
Performa - free
Colour classic - free
There might be some others around, not sure.

At the moment I'm playing with Garageband 2 alot, I'm not good but like making music.

Can you run things like Linux on Mac's?The OSX is based onm FreeBSD. Lot's of *nix software is ported now under GPL.

Not immune - just none (other than a trojan) and safer because of the way the system prompts you to make changes and the general setup of the system. Much like *nix.

Yep the new macs are comparable to most PC's in speed, the new operating system OS 10 (up to 10.3.7) is a version of linux (BSD) and is very stable and practically virus free. There is heaps of free software available, the software by Apple is very good (if you are into making music Garageband 2 is cool) and you can even get Microsoft office (better than the PC version).

Pulled my first 11" black and white apple II from it's box in 1985, by best reckoning, and have been a power user ever since. (Hey, 20 years!)

I have done a lot on PC too and 'will go wherever the money is' - (good call). My design qualification is actually in CAD - achieved back when that was all DOS shit.

Worked as a software support for an apple centre in the early 90's, through to production managed and art directed ITMedia (rugby world, rip it up etc etc) in the early noughties.

Nowdays I freelance, but my macs are my business. There are 5 in my immediate vicinity. Powerbook, old Imacs, G3, G4. - G5 on the horizon.

A significant amount of the motorcycle and bike product advertising you may have laid eyes on over the last 3 years has come form this KB browsing machine.

If you've picked up a Kiwi Rider, BRM, Trader, Twin Eagle, Autocar, got junk mail or have seen anything plugging Triumph, AMPS, motomail, shoei, teknics, shinko, silkolene, fly, dri rider, davida, gas gas, piaggio, vespa, and heaps more, or visited their NZ web sites - This G4 right here, baby.

And yes, they are pretty much immune to viruss - Macs do not recognise self executable files .exe. Unless scripted or a designated start up file, nothing runs 'on it's own' on a mac - it's all user executed.

My first Mac was a Macintosh Plus. Waaaaaaay back in about '85.

I remember outputting Wellington's first Mac to film job in 1990 using a Mac IIci with a Rocket, 37MB of RAM, a 12 inch colour monitor and a Radius Pivot.

Moved on to Quadra 900s, G3's, G4's and G5's.

Now I'm a lowly Print buyer/broker, and I just use an eMac.

Have a Sawtooth G4/400 at home. Running OS9, OS10.3.7, Mandrake triple-boot.

Gentoo PPC is a great Linux solution for Macs... Looks nice and there's lots of configurability.

I run PCs exclusively (not having the money for Macs) but would love something nice and graphicy - now that the Mini is available I might just..... Hmmmmm.....

I dropped Gentoo on my Workbox. I'm putting a Gentoo firewall together at home at the moment - I used to work for the Evil Empire, so I am patched to the hilt, but I will be Wine-ing soon, now that everything is sorted for iTunes etc....

re: SATA - I think Mandrake has full support for SATA now. (as of Kernel 2.4.27 you could build bits in - and that was a year ago!)

As much as I would love a MAC, Im still stuck using a PC. I've both Macs and PCs, and basing it on working on a technical helldesk, MACS ALL THE WAY!!

No spyware, viruses (not many) hardware just works, etc etc :done:

I've never really had to use macs for work or anything, so I've always been a bit of a pc guy. My old flatmates were both graphic designers and had g5's and a powerbook g4, and both of them looked pretty swanky. It's cool how OSX is built on unix. I really like having the option to just bring a terminal window up to do anything without having to go through gui's.

I'm running Winxp at home on my desktop and laptop mainly for games and application compatibility, but my gateway runs debian, and my work pc runs fedora core 3 so I really use linux more than windows. I've been meaning to set up my interface here at work so it's similar to the OSX one, but I'm lazy :D
