Airhead BMWs. Tell us about yours...

Airhead BMW twins, I have done many a mile thru rain, hail and snow.
From -10 at the Elefantreffen to + 40 in Eastern Turkey.
Pulled gearboxes out on the side of roads and even been tow started by a Trabant.
Once hauled a Watsonian GP up to the Artic Circle....very cold even in June.
Enough of my ramblings tell us your BMW story.

Had an r65 once. Hated it, so got rid of it.

Took three years to make up my mind though.

The closest I've got to an airhead story is being outbid on trademe for an R75/6. I'd love to get one if the opportunity comes up again.

I love mine.

The boxer engine sticking out the sides means it doesn't lie flat when I drop it so I can pick it up all by myself, even if I overbalance and drop it again straight away on the other side.

Needless to say I am never going to Wanganui McDonalds again....

If I hadbn't bought the MHR chances are I would have been looking for a R90S or R100RS

I had a R75/7 for one year (1988) and did around 20,000km on it, January 1989 a van cutting a corner took me and my mate on his R90S out and totaled both of them

I loved that bike, comfortable 120-130 kmh cruising, 300km+ cruising range, ok the brakes and suspension weren't real flash and they weren't exactly fast off the line, I was about to improve that when it was written off

I haven't actually felt quite as comfortable on any other bike I've owned since and a few people got a bit of a suprise at just how fast you could punt one along on a good day

Oh yeah, and you never get cold feet

Oh yeah I forgot you knew him! Nope, I still just turn the taps off when I stop. One day I'll get around to it.

Only just got the fork seals done! It's such a great bike, that even with all the work that needs doing, it still rides like a dream and doesn't let me down on long trips or anything.

Never really had too much bother with my r65 either. It just wasn't me at the end of the day.

My introduction to airhead boxers was a '76 R60/6. I loved that bike, it was like a mate, I wanted a bit more power & some weather protection, so i bought an R100rs monoshock, which i still have, 10 years now i think.
I also have an R90/6 powered classic road race sidecar which i had an absolute ball on today, & if we're lucky Kiwifruit might post up some pics of it going around Taupo later on.

I've only just started my relationship with the R65.As per usual with a new bike in my possession,I have pulled it apart...so it doesn't go.I need to know all the little secrets before I'm happy to ride a bike.These Germans have some strange ideas,but I'm sure they will change to my way of thinking in due course.

I had an R60/5 many years ago,and the R65 is a lot better bike to ride,but I still need to come to terms with the handling - there are some changes to set it up to my preference.I intend to have it for some time,it will be a work in progress.
