View Full Version : Questions on trademe?

Why is it that the people who ask many and difficult questions about your listings on trademe never bid for the items you are selling? Are there people who have this as some kind of hobby? They don't seem interested in actually buying anything, but they will ask about this and that... Then some other people actually make bids. What is going on, is it some kind of conspiracy?

Have a go at retail. You'll meet the same type of people there.

I have also noticed this. Might be people with the same product trying to find out it's worth or maybe selling the same thing somewhere and trying to get an edge over you.... getting you to point out minor nuances etc.

On the other hand you have fucking losers who like drawing attention...

What kind of questions? I ask a lot of questions on bikes on tradme and only buy the ones I have asked shitloads of questions on. You don't just go on what the seller has told you originally and buy it

Questions like:

Can you offer a buy now price?

Can I visit you and view the item? (When it's a general item and giving contact details is against trademe rules)

What is the reserve price?

Also questions that answer themselves if you take 10 seconds to look at the pictures posted.

The answer to all these questions should be "fuck off", but of course you have to be polite...

All sound like your typical trademe questions to me?

I often ask questions on items that I never intend to buy. Usually when the ad is poorly worded or incorrect or the seller blatently fails to mention a shortcoming or constraint of the particular item that prospective buyers should know.

Maybe I should include this FAQ with anything I list on tardme:

1. Can you offer a buy now price? No, I would have offered it already. I started an auction and I am going to finish it as an auction.

2. Can I visit you and view the item? (When it's a general item and giving contact details is against trademe rules). No, and don't try to get me into trouble with tardme again.

3. What is the reserve price? I payed tardme for a reserve price that is HIDDEN. I am not giving it to you for nothing.

4. What does item a look like on the other side? Look at the picture, stupid...

They day that stats have proved that nealy all who ask the questions either dont bid or get outbid???

Today I have asked 2 questions on auctions and I'm about 70% sure I'll buy on one and 90% on the other.

Haven't seen any stats. It's just my experience. Hope you get the things you want.

Apart from the stupid questions trademe has been good to me. I have gotten more than I ever dreamed for some of the items I have sold thanks to competition between bidders.

I think 90% of them are window-shoppers. Many interesting things I come across on trademe I'll ask questions about and save the seller as a favorite, and get back to him another day.

But I think there are others who will take issue with some point in your auction and troll you on it. Up to you whether they are correct or not - sometimes they are.

I have a feeling that there are some people who troll around tardme and ask if there is a buy now price, in the hope that they can rip someone off and get an item for less than it is actually worth...

Called bargain hunting. If the seller offers it and some one accepts then how can that be ripping some one off. Just because you know they could have got a lot more means fuck all.

I ask questions when I'm serious about thinking about buying.

If the answer sucks, I'm out of there. Because it shows the seller is dreaming, or less than open.

Recently a guy was selling a non-model-specific belly pan. (With no bolts or brackets...)

His auction stated "EASY TO FIT USING" but the line was not complete.

I asked what the missing words were and he modified the text (removing that unfinished line) and said in the answer "It means easy to fit".

So I was out of there.

I agree that "what's the reserve" etc. are dumbarse questions.

I agree, and that is how I do my trademe shopping as well. If the guy seems like a clueless, arse-ramming, uncle-fucker then I'll just get out of there.

Nothing like a poorly presented and worded auction ran by some fuckwit who does not give a toss about what happens after he gets the cash. I don't know why so many people fail to understand the concept that the presentation of the add has quite an effect on the interest in the item and price paid- especially on motor vehicles and expensive items. It's unbelievable.

Also worth nothing is the absolute dog-shit spelling skills of a staggering amount of trademe buyers and sellers. Unbelievable at times. It makes the whole place and NZ look like a fucking shambles at times, honestly...

It says a lot about the quality of our "education" system. How is it that people leave school without knowing how to write?

Thanks to all who have contributed, it has helped to shed light on some issues...

I definately won't buy anything that could be faulty without checking it out in person first. Often it starts off with a "can I come around and check it out" or "I have more questions, please txt me on 027xxxxxx", after which I'll organise a visit.

If I like the item I'll give them the buy now price there and then, if none I'll make an offer. What he does with the cash/auction after that is his own business.

The "What's the reserve??" question is pretty pointless too. All I do is keep bidding on the item in 14% increments until I hit the "you are within 15% of the reserve price" message. I don't want to hang around auctions that are asking more than I'm prepared to pay.

On top of that - you get the idiots who ask about things that you've already said in the advert :angry2:

Some of you need to get over it. I have asked heaps of times what they would take for something or made an offer on an auction (i.e whats the reserve) and they have told me and I bought it because of it. Saves farting around placing bids, especially if it's a no reserve and hasn't been bidded on yet. And why not just leave a contact number for them to ring to arrange a viewing, because no one with a realworld wallet or half a brain is going to buy something worth good money without checking it out in person.

Speak for yourself.

I have sold things for thousands of $ that the buyer did not check out in person. They had brains and real wallets and they were happy with the transaction and so was I.

Sums up my thoughts too - a lot of sellers and question askers must have gone to school just to eat their lunch - and weren't there one minute longer...

Bid for and won classic car without even seeing a picture of it, had it transported to me and it was as good (better even) as expected, ya just got to know when to pick them.

No offense, but this may actually apply to what I said if every person on trademe selling a bike posted running footage with sound and 20,000 pics of it. If you ask these "stupid" questions then it can go like this: Hey mate can I have a look of the bike?- Yep sure come to _____. Check it out, bikes a shitter but you have no money lost. Other side? Ahwell he sounds honest I think I'll send over 5K cash. Get there and it sounds like its about to start launching valves for your spinchster as you ride it off his driveway:whistle: I would be pretty pissed if someone got all pissed off because I asked him the last time he rebuilt the top end on his NSR.
And scumdog-You got lucky. My mate bought a cr125 with only 20 hours on-"normal wear and tear", its for something like 6K thinking "bargain!". Arrives and see's this "wear and tear" is cracked plastics, dented pipe, slightly bent subframe and just basically a turd. Different opinions though I guess. I just get someone I know to check out bikes too far to drive for me. Last bike I was about to buy in Napier (5 hour drive), a KBer was nice enough to go check it out and test ride it for me.

I'll regularly email sellers of things that I think are ludicrously expensive (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Scooters/auction-190873053.htm) and ask if they put a 1 in front of the price deliberately.

We bought some stuff off t/m a week or so ago,on behalf of people, said to person after viewing, give you $xxxx as it was buy now, they said yep.Said to seller tell t/m the item has faults so want to remove the item, they foolishly got a rellie or friend to hit buynow,so the lost a few $$$ on sale then got hit with buynow fees.Dishonest maybe but t/m charge enough.

Best one is a radar detector at the mo,no serial no's,or window bracket.Couple of q and a on it makes good reading. And it is the same as mine which was flogged recently and is in a town approx 150km away, ours the mounting bracket was left behind.

That is very interesting. Let's do the math on this thing. It costs $11.000 more than fuel powered 250cc bike. For $11.000 you can buy 7.857 litres of petrol. That is enough to ride about 157.000km. The battery on the electric scooter lasts 80.000km. I wonder how much it will cost to replace... Leads me to believe you would have to be insane to buy the thing.
