OK this has come up a few times in recent threads but I am gonna have my bitch...

I have just been out to get some lunch, walking along Customs Street West in the warm drizzle thinking 'what poo conditions to be riding in' and then I see a sight that left me momentarily lost for words folowed by incredulity followed by a bit of anger.

THIS CHICK...putting on her stupid little half helmet about to get on her scooter and join the masses on those greasy roads.
The rest of her attire consisted of a sleeveless knee length dress and sandles.

But it was OK FOLKS ....because she obviously was wearing that amazing invisible body armour AND the piece de resistance???

OMG! She was also wearing one of those hi-vis vests with "look for bikes'' on the back. Good on ya. Thats gonna save that sun-bed tanned skin when you arse off on a patch of oil... I mean seriously the roads around the bottom of town are treacherous at the mo!

DUMB BITCH! I don't know why it pisses me off but it just does!

Yeah it made me laugh too but the thing is IF she arses off she is gonna be claiming ACC and it will be yet another stat against us motorcyclists and more ammunition in favour of NOT dropping the exorbitant levvies that we pay in our registration...

Same old argument but that never mind cos that is another whole thread...LOL.

All I can say is that it was quite a sight...:scooter:

Well last Sunday I proved the worth of ATGATT.......dropped the bike in a carpark at about 2mph. Leather trou saved the leg from the gravel rash - just about cut through in one place. Armour saved shoulder and elbow. And that's as slow as you can fall off.......

I guess the vest was a last-minute addition to keep the drizzle off?

And I'm all for Freedom of Choice...its my choice to have a wee bitch about it but I was also seeing the funny side... I'm not a f*ckin nazi!

Yep, in the wet isn't too smart, but hey, maybe she justs rides slower to account for the conditions. If she does come off, well shit happens, maybe she'll do something different next time. But then again, maybe it'll only be a scratch and she'll consider the risks worth it.

On the ACC front, sitting here at my desk typing (which is the physical part of what I do all day, the rest is talking and thinking) i consider paying $166.50 a year ACC to ride a motorbike quite a privilege, given that I'm paying over $1,500 for my high risk typing activities.

I spend quite a bit of time in Europe and love the way scooters are such a big part of their lives and how so many people ride them as their everyday transport. The design brief for a scooter was to build something that a woman could ride with a skirt and high heeled shoes, so your "friend" was just using the tool as it was designed, which is how they are ridden in Europe.

interesting when we were in Melbourne recently, there were a LOT of road safety billboards with fairly graphic depictions of people who had fallen off wearing typical scooter attire: much gore.

obviously a real issue over there and the weather is so much better that the riding season where temptation might suggest insufficient kit is longer too.

LOL! My POINT: She was SOOOOOOO concerned for her safety that she was wearing a high vis vest but she seemed to have forgotten to put on the rest of her 'safety gear'.

The only explanation I could come up with was that she must have been wearing invisible armour!

Yes I got pissed off but really the whole thing is laughable!

That brings up a whole other question - is it better to get pissed off or pissed on?

dont forget the bubblewrap
... or the helmet.
Or the earplugs, kneebraces, "groinal area" protector, shin pads, mouthguard, safety glasses, chest protector....

That's why I usually just go in the nude, or take the car or walk if I'm "just popping up to the shops".

Thanks for the reminder. Major oversight on my part. Thankfully I have someone (nodrog and vifferman) trying to save me from myself. Imagine if I had to think for myself. Fuck that for a joke, I might bump my head or something!

Eeeeee gads man, are you insane. We all know the ruckus boobs on bikes caused.

Im not sure auckland is ready for "Shriveled willies in the rain on bikes with minimal protection, and/or safety equipment."

Nodrog, with a tagline like that, think of the crowds we could draw. I dont mean to alarm you guys, but I think we are staring greatness in the eye.......

Ha man thats hilarious:clap:

The few times Ive been on a scooter Ive worn all the gear but saying that the only reason I was on a scooter was to ride around a go kart track at full speed with 9 others, everyone crashed at least once:scooter:

But anyway most people that use a scooter just use them for convenience so all the safety gear would make it more of an effort so they cant see the point of it, well thats my theory anyway

Many years before we started road riding.....

We used to go camping a few times each summer and had a couple of old FA50 scooters that we used to take along. We were at a reserve out in the back blocks and there were lots of roads to explore (which we now do on our "proper" bikes).

Our riding attire consisted of shorts, t-shirt, shoes (coz kick start otherwise probably would have been jandals) and a cap (to keep nose from getting sunburnt). So not even a helmet, and no gloves.

We'd venture as far as the fuel range allowed - maybe 50kms at a time.

I cringe now when I think if it....

Although it was heaps of fun

I regret to say I once fell off the ST1100 sliding backwards down a hill in the ice. But yes ... ATGATT

needs to be some more education about how dangerous riding scooters can be....I blame the Italians (Glamor Freaks) LOL anyway I suppose if we saw someone in a rossi once piece fully loaded, we'd probably laff just as hard...SO I suppose we've got to cut the scooter rider a little slack aye :headbang:

i fail to see the problem really... when i first started riding (late 70's on the street). we didnt have helmet laws (in th USA).. i once went from Philadelphia to Miami wearing jeans, a t-shirt and sunnies. ...hiway speeds of over 70 mph for most of the run..

this is really the first time ive ever owned a helmet..ive ridden Vmax's at high speed..1100 Katanas, ZX1100's, HD's, etc...all with only eye protection...

ya pays ya money.. ya takes ya chances..
