try ringing your local WOF testing station.... and ask them...
They have all the written jargon on lights etc...

Why wouldn't they be? If they are red and visible, it shouldn't be a problem should it?

Should be fine.

This is the LTSA we're talking about. Logic and practicalness DO NOT enter into it. Soundbeltfarm - you really need to check with your WOF issuer

Used to work for OnRoad on the car side (duno how to start a bike even!) but the same rule should apply to both bikes and cars in terms of exterior lighting:
Cornering lamp (all round) must be substantially white or amber at the front; substantially red or amber at the back
Stop light must be red
other than that you can do whatever you want to the bulb, be it LED / bulb...etc (i mean, nobody's gonna pull the stuff out and tell you "son, u failed WOF cos I don't like it" :niceone: )

Trust the man, he bloody works there. LTSA can be quite stubbon about some things. Practicality doesnt usually come to mind.

It's happened to me... Mind you it was a few years back and I was a young un... Got my old man to take it back and went straight through...
Apparently my front end was too stiff..... On a rigid framed bike. I mean it had zero rear suspension...
First thing the guy said was 'what the f**k do you call this then?' Went down hill rapidly, failed on about 6 things.

The wording is...''stay steadily illuminated''...a straight LED bulb will be ok so long as it's bright enough.

Some WoF places are weird tho... we've had barbie for 3 years (since new) and after failing on a tail light lense ($224) the guy who said "yep" reckoned we shoulda had tare weight on it... me:"well, buddy, it didn't come wif one, so I aint writing one on it" him:"ok"
nobhead... either it does or it doesn't.... he obviously had no idea....
and the bosses commode goes to the same place everytime and sometimes they pass it with the tinting and other times they don't then they do again!!!... what is with that??? it was tinted the day after he bought it!!!

We've been around the block so many times on window tinting I think a lot of guys just don't want to go there anymore. There is just so much stuff we have to look at,to do a WoF by the book would take hours - and they give us 20 mins.So a few years ago they said we don't have to physicaly check every single component for compliance (like every lamp, seatbelt, window for standards markings) but only if we are ''suspicious'',hence some discrepancies in testing.

Not so sure about bikes, but with car WoFs they are so many regs that just about any car can be failed by legit means.

Too right - I've said it before....if we checked any vehicle by the book, nearly all would fail...even the new off the floor ones.Just keep quiet and accept the occasional phopar eh?...crash...I got my own shop where I rule with an iron fist in well worn slippers....yeah,gotta go and polish my letterbox now...

On Thursday the guy that came down (to Taupo) on the Busa (brand new) had those lights, the lights would dance around til he braked then it was a solid red. It was hard not to keep staring at the lights but after an hour or so following him the novelty of looking (every so often) at the dancing lights wore off.

Be aware the cheap LED bulbs blow fairly readily esp. on a vibrating thing like a m'bike. :disapint:

a well designed LED system will outlast any bulb, hence why trucks/HELLA etc and most companies are going to LED systems, you just need to have a correct current going through all the LEDs equally or you will get differnt colors showing and will burn them out quicker.
Ps LED are not affected by vibration at all! use electrons changing energy levels and emiting the lost energy as photons it has been a while since i covered this so may be a bit out

Just going by what I read in Yankee hot-rod mags, seems the inferior items are a tad 'fragile'.

Any idea why?
LED's are generally brighter and very rarely fail. So why the bugger not?

i think he qualifies the statement later by saying it is they fact they flash and dance around and do not stay "steadily illuminated" is the reason that they are illegal

Depends on how they are feeling and if you brought gifts. Men at WOF/COF stations like gifts

I can see how a dancing light would be a distraction and would not be passed for a WOF.
Cheap LED fail not because of the bulb, but because of the mounting is cheap. It isn't water proofed, or is of quick and dirty manufacturing. Cheap soldier, etc all make the electronics fail and not the LED.

seen the testing station today and they said that they would pass it.
but also said in the same breath that many places will probably not pass it.
