I've only briefly read about this bike and when i read that it was 3 cylinder i was amazed and wondered exactly how is that possible.

Can someone care to explain?

Heard of 6 cylinder cars? The engine is exactly half of one of those.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy...

4 vs 3

I am more freaked out at how 1 cylinder engines don't turn in reverse every now and then.

I suspect it would be a lot more entertaining to hear why you think it's odd?

A triple is a reasonable compromise and frankly a bit of a marketing exercise because it's not a usual japanese layout... (although they have built them)

WELL accually they do..
had a couple of 2 strokes fire up and run backwards
the thing is ,, you dont know. until you grab a handfull
never had a 4 stroke fire bakewards
dont think its possable

Surely the question is about balance?

What are the pistons doing? 2 up and down and another 180 degrees out from those? Or are they all 120 degrees out from each other?

And how do they balance the thing? Lumpy bits on the crank? Balance shaft? Does it not need any balancing?

(I don't think Slifer asked a dumb question...)

Heres a bit of a write up about the reasons for going to a triple.

Some interesting facts and drawings

It's a little known fact that all of the Triumph triple range are actually four cylinders. It's just that British workers are so pissed these days the engines keep coming off the assembly line missing a cylinder.

...Wait, your not getting confused between 3 cylinders and a 3 stroke are you?

Ah yes triples - I recall these two girls when I was younger. 2 plus 1 equal triple. Unless of course you count boobs then its a inline 4. Either way there is a shaft pumping up a cylinder all the way to redline.

Stop exagerating MD. It was only one worker and he was sacked after putting my engine together.

Do a youtube search for DAYTONA 675 SHARK EXHAUST and you'll find a vid of the bike that not only sold me on swapping my Blade for a Canadian 675, but also blew the speakers on the laptop with the finally highway driveby the owner does!!

I want the exhaust too!

Update... added the linkhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVBVoXNuHWc

.......you CANNOT beat the sound of a nicely tuned triple. I have also heard that inline triples, like V6's, are as close to the most naturally balanced donks you can get......
