Ohakune Loop - My training Ride.
The long range weather forecast for today was clear skies so bored with holidays I jacked up the babysitter and booked my day ride. A nice leisurely blat across to Wanganui, up to Ohakune and back home. Company would have been nice but people were moaning about having to work or getting excited over a new bike (another armchair Kwaka in the Manawatu).

Absolutely fantastic weather at the start of the day so from Feilding I shot over to Wanganui, Whitelock Suzuki, to look at Tank bags. They didn't have any but the lovely sales assistant gave me some tips on the cemetery circuit gates and parking. Thanks heaps.

I then shot over to Mitre 10 to grab some earplugs to try out, and didn't like them to start with so binned them when I stopped at Keown Honda on the River. Quite a non descript little place but a well stocked showroom and again extremely helpful. Apparantly they are going to be open Boxing Day with a sale (if you are heading to Cemetery Circuit on Boxing Day I recommend a look in). No pretty assistant this time though (sorry guys). One of the guys, very helpfully, showed me genuine expandable Suzuki magnetic one that had come off a Bandit they traded. Scored for a good price. A fanastic run through the Paraparas and up to Ohakune. Road surface was good apart from 3 washouts and some loose and sticky tar just south of Fields Track, which should be watched out for if you're going that way. I must try Fields Track some time.

Only slight wind over the Paraparas. I see they are replacing some of the crash barriers on bends with cheese cutter. Didn't like that. Tried the earplugs again from Ohakune to Taihape. Definately puts you in a different zone. I found I had a tendency to rev higher in the gears with the earplugs in. The slight wind was seriously gusty through to Waiouru and I had a moment just south of Waiouru town when the wind blew me over the median. Winds just like home and gusty on and off till Halcombe.

All in all a great training ride. An awesome route for practicing a bit of everything. 325km 15.6litres 4.8l / 100km. -Sorry about making you feel bad for working Matt.

Best moment - Being eyed up and getting a wave and a smile from the lady in the Audi at Wanganui. (Nearly fell off my bike)

Sounds like a great ride. However, if this is the best part of your ride - you need a new ride mwahahahahahaha

NZSarge certainly has a nice new ride! Al, Sarge and I had a nice we pootle over the Track and must of spent a couple of hours talking shit at the cafe!

Most excellent roads to ride tho i have been told that fields track is more suitable for dual purpose bikes these days.I did it quite a few years ago on my commando and snapped the primary chain halfway up the first hill climb.
Just trundled back down to the falls cafe and arranged a pickup as the then owners were very bike obliging.Shame its a closed shop now as it was always a good refreshment stop.

I done a similar loop a couple weeks back, Though I started in Wanganui, went through Marton onto Fielding, then out the back end of Fielding through Kimbolton and then just followed my nose..., Some stunning riding out past Kimbolton, bastard badly maintained roads winding through massive valleys and hills and around cliffs.

Crossed an old style wooden bridge,seen a beauty camping ground, and then to my surprise popped back onto the main road just North of Mangaweka,carried on north, Then across to Raetihi and through the Para's back to Wanganui.

Some awesome scenery and roads up Kimbolton / Rangiwahia. On a clear day it almost seems you can the mountains. The trick is to take it slow and enjoy it.:2thumbsup

Good riding around Wanganui, ya wanna try the Hunterville/Fordell road, another awesome piece of tight twisties......

Fields track still able to be ridden on a road bike, another challenging ride!.........
