Stebel saves the day again...

I know everything I say has been said before, but it may serve as a reminder for the silly season.

Nothing but holiday makers on the roads, so being a lot more carefull I was wearing my bright yellow Fluorescent vest, lights on (always),and riding a lot slower and further to the left on blind corners....
Turning a hard blind 90 degree left corner yesterday afternoon in a build up area I encounter a little red cage COMPLETELY on my side of the road... Middle aged male driver, male passenger.
I swerved completely to the left, slowed down even more and let the Stebel airhorn RIP and rip..... not sure in which order
Cage driver was visualy shaken by the noise, I could see him jolt in his seat.
He swerved back and we missed....not by much, but enough.
Without the Stebel he would have collected me, I had nowhere further to the left to go...

Off course I turned around and wished him a happy new year.....

Luckily I was on the Aprilia, my Harley has the standard horn still, and is a wee bit wider....it would not have made it past that car....

Yip the Stebel I had on my Sprint was put to good use on a couple of occassions.
I am sure a young fulla and his mate in a car thought I was a truck at first, they laughed and gave the thumbs up when pulled along side them..

Good to hear a Stebel horn saved the day again, I gotta get me one of those!

I set out from the UK witha Stebel Nautilus horn, and after practically 5 seconds of service life over 4 weeks, it packed up in Kazakhstan. I was soooo looking forward to using it to it's full potential in India too! :weep:

Did you wire it up according to instructions with relay and all?....mine seems to go ok, and gets used for fun and anger quite regularly.....

Am seriously interested in one. Are they easy to wire in?
Had a car pull a u-turn right in front of the Burgman this morning, driver wasn't indicating and didn't look. I'm sure he would have noticed the incoming noise from one of those horns.

Personally, I think the horn is the most useless piece of equipment on any bike. If you're in an emergancy situation the last thing you should be thinking of is "where's that fucking horn button".

Believe me PB, if you have time to think about, find, and use your horn in an emergancy situation, your eyes and brain will have taken care of the situation long before it becomes a problem.

A disapproving wag of the finger will take care of the rest.

Perhaps so. But they are excellent for PREVENTING emergencies.

A blast on my very loud horn has woken many a dozy twit from his slumbers, or drawn his attention back from his cell phone to the road. Or, simply advertised my presence to him , when I suspect he 'has not seen me'.

I use mine a LOT.

U-turns for insstnce. Yes, if you wait until the car is actually doing its U turn in front of you, a horn is not much use. But why wait. If I see a car ahead of me pull over to the left , and no "door opening getting out " activity (or if I see him looking to the right the way they do), a good blast will make him think twice.

If perhaps sometimes I blast an innocent soul who has just stopped to contemplate his navel for a moment, then so be it. My staying alive is more important than his mediatations not being disturbed

Fair enough.

However, I can't remember ever having used my horn for it's intended purpose.

Adequate forethought has managed to make it's inclusion on all my bikes surplus to requirement.

(And on the occasions that forethought was lacking, the inclusion of the horn would not have made the slightest difference.)

99.9% of the time horns are only used as an afterthought.

I spent my 'Stupid Years' riding the streets of South Auckland.

(Nowadays the only thing that would save us from South Auckland is a contained nuclear holocaust).
