hey i would like to re-instate one of the "rules" of the chiller, which is the "rule of 3"*** whereby every third "drinking"* MEMBER to attend the chiller has to buy a round**. this is probably the only rule that the SMC has ever come up with but has at some point been forgotten.
* - the term "drinking" applies to any individual that is purchasing an alcoholic beverage for consumption at the time of the chiller's operation
** - the term "round" refers to a purchase of the 3 beverages for $10 deal that is usually available at the post-grad cafe
*** - given the definition of the term "round", this rule will NOT apply if the 3 beverages for $10 deal is not available

I has a course this week. So I should be there at fiveish. or before. Assuming the stupid place doesn't shut down at three. How they ever expect to make any money when they are never open I do not know.

amen to that...bastards close very early, they need a fireplace and some better beers for that three for 10 deal. Oh how I wish there was a decent bar near uni.

Na, fuck that rule. People who buy rounds at one chiller dont need to buy ones the next. That way it is even. Due to timetables some people always end up not chippin in.

28th July 2009, 07:58
They need more than just a fireplace, add in some decent music, and stopping the stupid 'start the music when we want you to leave, turn it up slowly until you have to shout to talk, hoping you'll leave on your own'
Danae
28th July 2009, 08:54
Oh god the music selection...such bad remixes that you can't tell whether the disc is skipping or it's meant to be that way. Damn a fireplace would be nice...they scrape up enough revenue I reckon...

Na, fuck that rule. People who buy rounds at one chiller dont need to buy ones the next. That way it is even. Due to timetables some people always end up not chippin in.
umm think about it logically. firstly, there is 1 in 3 chance that the person who comes in third is you. secondly, there is an even smaller chance that it's the same person/people every week, regardless of how fucked up your timetable is. thirdly, chances are that if you are going to buy a drink, you'll buy the 3 for $10 so it's not something that is an extreme ask.....im basically unemployed and can still afford $10 to spend on my mates once a week :done:
motorbyclist
28th July 2009, 16:30
i say less calling on people to buy rounds - if they want a drink they'll go up and buy three, or ask if anyone else wants some booze if they're broke.
personally, i suddenly feel less inclined to do something after it's been demanded of me, even if i was going to do it anyway.

Best moment of the night - jafa and I racing honda rc161, inline 4 250cc bikes around nurumebekenfkjwenerg ring. Definately needs a ten speed gear box..., and me destroying real wolf with the little 250 when he was in the 8 litre corvette

I like this plan as I am now missing a tooth I need single malt scotch to heal the wound....in copious amounts ;)
Absinthe is only nice when you drink gold label (thats 89% for all you lay peeps)..none of this pansy green or red label crap.
Oh and dont drink it straight mix it nicely and bask in the aniseed flavoured goodness.

wtf why would you buy the 89.99% stuff and then not shot it straight?
i don't even like aniseed, but the 89.9% just tastes like burning so it's ok:2thumbsup
never bought anything weaker - can't find where to get the 92% stuff a mate had "acquired" and have tried the 60% stuff with extra wormwood and wasn't that impressed.... all the yuk without any the payoff though it did mix well with sprite....
and before you non-students go raving on about how we can't be so poor if we're paying $60 for what amounts to about 500ml of booze, bear in mind it's cheaper than beer, per unit alcohol, and about 100 times as fast - 3 shots from sober (no more without medical staff on hand, this is probably borderline as it is) and you can feel yourself getting drunk. 5 minutes later you're completely off your face. non-alcoholic fluids are recommended at this point.
you see, some of us students don't even have time to get drunk, let alone stand around drinking several litres of beer;)

Maybe becuase you are still a young'un who drinks merely to get kicks and get shitfaced, whilst I drink less regularly and more for the joy of having a drink.

bear in mind it's cheaper than beer, per unit alcohol
No it isn't... $60 for 500ml of 90% = $0.13/ml of ethanol, $22 for a dozen steinlager pure at 5% = $0.11/ml... There are many better value beers than steinlager pure and still the option of scrumpies/cask wine.
3 shots from sober (no more without medical staff on hand, this is probably borderline as it is) and you can feel yourself getting drunk. 5 minutes later you're completely off your face.
3 shots at 90% = 81ml of ethanol, 7 shots of 40% = 84ml of ethanol.
According to the Widmark Equations, this will leave an 80kg male with a BAC of 12mg/ml. The legal driving limit is 8mg/ml... So if you shot 3 shots of absinthe and then wait 15 mins, you'll be at 1.5x the legal limit... For a regular drinker that's hardly shitfaced. For an alcoholic that's barely noticable.

That wasn't really my intention. If you don't drink all that much (like me now that my undergrad days are behind me) then 1.5x the legal limit can be completely obliterated. If that's what it takes to get you properly hammered then score, you're gonna save a ton of money.
Ran some more numbers on alcohol values (prices from the mill website)
Brenner 330ml and Viking 440ml beer in cans is cheapest at $0.073/ml and $0.067/ml respectively...
Red Square 1L vodka is $0.093/ml with Smirnoff 1L at $0.100/ml
Jim Beam Red 1L $0.100/ml with Jack Daniels 1L $0.138/ml (from local liquor story, for some reason the mill has 1L JDs at $65, should be $55).
Beer would be cheaper again from the supermarket and I couldn't find alcohol percentages for aquila/chardon/scrumpies etc.
Edit: Drink whatever you want, if people are telling you that you're a student and therefore should only be drinking rheineck tallboys that have been dented and are in the clearance bin then fuck em, it's your money and your choice. Just don't say it's cheaper than beer because I can't help myself when I see something that is factually incorrect.

Where does bulk ethanol 'liberated' from labs fit in the analysis? IIRC the 40 gallon drums were INSANELY cheap as there was no excise on them.
Surely any home-brew FTW?! (And bonus longer chain alcohols from poor process control! Turbocharge your hangover ...)
There was always a litre or 2 left in the bulk EtOH drums that the siphon just couldn't reach...which was still there at drum disposal time...:shifty: (Damned heavy metal contaminants alleged to be in cheap EtOH. Ruined all the potential fun.)
Have tried analytical grade EtOH, but it was horrid. Dehydrating agents or summat.

Pedantry is my forte :D I was just disputing the whole 'cheaper than beer claim' and got a little carried away. Home brew can be good depending on how keen the brewer is (more often it tastes like watery marmite though)...
Edit: For students I would have thought the price per drunkenness index wasn't particularly trivial!

Indeed on the latter. Pedantry IS more impressive when it is 'trivial' in the big picture (yet important in its subgroup) and bemuses casual observers.
We could factor in food status, different alcohol dehydrogenase genotypes, the poorly explained effects of carbonation on alcohol uptake, inhalation of vaporised alcohol etc and come up with a fool-proof guide to the ultimate in economical drunkenness (without Police and Hospitals) for any unique person and drink combination :sherlock:

Because the yellow label absinthe tastes a hell of a lot different from green and red, as they all have varying degrees of different ingredients thrown in. The stronger the absinthe, the less needed when mised...and you can taste the aniseed in it. I think YOU miss the point of absinthe, another of the "its so strong so I must only be able to shot it and get shitfaced"
That is why. I dont state im a connoisseur. Different people like different drinks, maybe I like it mixed..and that is my opinon.
Ahhh so you went straight onto failnet to read what others say...supposedly "experts" who give their opinion on something and then say that is the right opinion. That is fail in my eyes.
My brother who is an bartender likes to drink it straight and mixed....and he likes the yellow label of the green and red. See different opinions
Note: never swish a shot of yellow label in ones mouth for one minute.....it makes your tongue bleed.....as I found out a few years back.

Sounds pretty logical to me...
I like Hennessy VSOP cognac mixed with L&P, try it sometime... Tastes like raisins and honey, beautiful drink. Most of the drink snobs I mention that to make a face like I've just suggested mixing it with the remains of blended roadkill...
If it tastes good, drink it! If it tastes crap but gets you hammered, drink it until you grow out of doing that. If it tastes crap but you drink it because its fashionable or 'proper' or you're afraid of getting mocked if you don't then that gets a wtf. Damn, looks like a good turnout... I got tasked with picking up dinner supplies on the way home then ended up completely dismantling the carbs on the bike... 5 hours later they're back together and I've got a horrible taste in the back of my throat from carb cleaner fumes...

Right guys. Who has money on their printing account? We need to print off a whole fookload of these anti-ACC-levy posters to put around the uni.

I was going to do the same to my hi-viz last night, but realised I could wait until the Chiller and hopefully get a small or medium sized vest. :D

Maybe you should add the proposed increases so people don't think we're bitching about an extra $20?

Yeah. Crap. Scared the hell out of me. My computer beeps every time it gets a pop up. Not the best thing in a quiet office. Tempted to send it around though. The last one we had went to everyone.

Stick the bike under the ledge outside the maths and science building. No drunken revellers, clear sight, under cover.
Maybe this week I'll show up before it finishes... What did people get up to after last weeks chiller and when did it wind up?

If you turn left where the marker is as you head up to symonds st, there is a line of motorcycle parks that you could fit any size bike into. There is also a completely hidden area up a ramp and around a corner in a walkway, but that's normally full.

ahhh yup, is the marker where there is a driveway off that road that joins up with symonds street, that is a turn left only?, always thought that led to some random workshop or something.

Yeah, you can only go left from the end of that road technically. It's pretty easy to head right though, even in rush hour due to the nearby lights.
It is a little bit of staff parking, access to a bunch of freight entrances for the labs in the buildings, gas bottles etc. and a few leftover areas that have been designated as motorcycle parking. Probably 15-20 bikes in there sometimes?
