The sandpit motorcycle park at woodhill forest has a really good learners track on it. Also you can go down the road part relatively easy for a learner. My wife and sister have and still are learning to ride and have been out there several times.
Check it out: http://www.thesandpit.co.nz/index.html

If you're just looking for a big open place to teach him how to use the gears and clutch etc, thundercross valley (http://www.supermotard.co.nz/MC%20Stuff/PTR/MC%20PTR%20Thunder.htm)'s novice area would be alright. Bit of a hike tho. The WMCC and power adventures family trail rides at woodhill are always good too.

my 11 year old has expressed an interest in learning to ride a dirt bike. I am looking for a venue that hires all the gear and bike and does novice coaching to get him into it.

I see Thundercross does this but they are a bit far out of town - are there any closer options to Auckland?

the sandpit used to hire bikes as well, may be worth a check,

but most riding facilites are out of town,
