Seems the judges have had enough and are finally taken a stance on hard crime
http://tinyurl.com/8l264v
Wonder when they are going to tackle real crime next??
O maybe here...
http://tinyurl.com/6unwlo
With all the real crime going on an the pathetic sentences handed out by namby pampy PC tree hugging lefties how can they justify stupid sentences like these.

Authorities are looking for thieves who robbed the Southern Circle Cement factory overnight. They appear to have fallen into the concrete silos and then made their getaway across a nearby creek.
Police warn to be on the lookout for hardened criminals.

Another way to percieve that is that her name is Aroha from Wangas, so say no more...
The cops and community have been through alot down there..and so perhaps this woman has been a pain in the a#*? Not sure its in the right place but the indication is there? Maybe the lack of respect for our laws will start being nipped right in the bud?
With the likes of tighter bail and parole laws, the disbanding of the Criminal Justice advisory board..the indication is there.
Of course that's just one way of looking at it..

Yes I did see the name and location however I wasn't going to point to the obvious on that one :).
Was kinda getting at the stupid sentences handed down lately, yet nobody prosecutes a land owner when a child drowns in an unfenced effluent pond, but swimming pools must be fenced.
Yea yea I know swimming pools and effulent ponds are different.
But in a work site all hazards are meant to be identified and actions taken to ensure safety of all staff/visitors etc.
Surely as the regulations go this would even come under and OSH issue.
But no Land of the Long White Cloud, still acceptable to kill a kid but HELL BELLS don't ever spit on a copper that just wont be stood for!

Yeah lets make farms safe so fence effluent ponds because they are SO attractive to people to want to swim in. Then they can fence all the rivers and lakes and beaches. Fill in all caves, drain all swamps, make it so you must give written notification when you drive or ride to work to anyone you might see on the way. Ban all machinery that can hurt people, and make all storys and movies nice so nobody is traumatised.
Safe work site my ass. You have a 2 and 3 year old and a property, you contain the kids. Because everythings a potential hazard to kids that size. What about water troughs, driveway, roads, family dog, stock, garages full of tools and poisons. I bet more kids get hurt by accidental contact with the coffee table in the homes than anything else.
Mother sadly for a short period of time neglected to
1) keep an eye on kids
2) Have kids in a controlled environment when she was not able to eyeball them.
How long does it take for a 2 year old to cover 200m?
Im a little pissed in a few articles the mother is labelled a hero for trying to save the lives of her own kids which she had failed to protect (I am in no way saying she wasnt a good mother or didnt adore her kids). The term hero should be reserved for people who really earn it, using it so friviolously cheapens the memory of the true greats of this world.

:calm:
I think you might need to take another look at that situation farm houses are meant to be fenced off because of stock, the farm owner refused to do so and a child died.
Therefore it surely is a neglect issue on both parties behalf. (mother and farm owner)
Sure we can cotton wool every kid fence every river and what would that solve?
The rant was about pathetic sentences handed down for a spitting offence where as a failing to provide adequate safety on a work site is not deemed important enough.
Maybe the millions of taxpayers dollars invested in the crime (speeding etc) could be better invested in actually solving real crime eg murders rapes and child abuse.
O and maybe hunting down taggers :Punk:

Whilst I'm not the biggest fan the cops have, personally I think the sentence was more than fair - in these modern times spitting at someone can be just as dangerous as pointing a gun. What if, for instance she was an intravenous drug user (not improbable) and had HIV/AIDS? If that were the case that spit would be as lethal as a bullet if not more so.
Besides that.....it is bloody disgusting whoever it's aimed at.

that don't hold up unless the officer had and open wound, it takes a shit load of spittle to pass the virus on, more likely to get hep c from a drug user and at least you can get a jab from the drs for that.
So unless the copper was drinking copious amounts of body fluid the chances of getting HIV are very slim indeed

For Pete's sake read the news report properly - she was charged and jailed for resisting arrest.
"She spat at one of the officers twice, then flung milk and cereal at him and spat at him again while resisting arrest inside the house."
Two weeks in pokey isn't much but sends a good signal.

Agreed. An awful situation. Easy to be wise afterwards but if I was the sharemilker I'd have put a temporary netting fence around the house and electric wires around the pond.
Blaming the landowner is just a way of avoiding guilt. The farmer wanted to level out the section at the house before fencing, fair enough. Any responsible parent would have taken their own steps to protect their children in the meantime. Blaming other people really pisses me off.

Yep, it's far to easy to blame someone else. look after your kids, they get into trouble. They covered 200m after getting out of the house in 'a few minutes' come on.
And the spitting, it's like charging a cop while swinging a golf club at an armed cop and then saying 'he shot me!'

They break the law they get done for it and suffer the consequences - pure and simple.
Stick them in prison till they're overcrowded... then stick a few more in for good measure. It's not going to be comfortable... sorry to say but IMHO it's not meant to be.
Don't change the budgets either. If the prison has $10,000/week for food and they need $15,000 worth of food then someone's going to start getting a bit hungry, they might have to grow their own... or possibly give up some of the niceties in their dinner.
Small crimes get small punishments - but that doesn't mean NO punishments...

To the non believers or childess ones - I can indeed confirm that 2 year olds can burn off to 200m (and beyond) in no time!
But you do HAVE to constantly be aware of situations that can lead to tragedy in an instant with this age, thats just the way it is.
Im not completely aware of this particular story, there has been So many in the last couple of weeks regarding drowing or associated water tragedies.
I have an estuary close to my house, its not fenced as it would have to be fenced for miles, however if my little one escaped and drowned, IMHO I feel this would be my fault, I know its there, and I know my wee ones capabilities.

The fact that it's disgusting holds up regardless. But, I was under the understanding that spit could pass the virus on if say it got in your eye, or mouth/nose - but maybe I'm confusing that with Hep C (I thought that was why dentists etc wear protective eyewear now).
Anyway, as Winston pointed out it's a mute point seeing as she was actually charged/jailed for resisting arrest.
I agree with Cary, it's too easy to blame someone else these days - seems like people think they can do things and there's always someone or something to blame it on, anyone or anything except themselves. No personal responsibility, you can blame 9 years of Labour government for that......

I did read it, the judges comments were directed more towards the spitting incident than the resisting arrest and flinging cornflakes (wow she must be a cereal assaulter). Yes she broke the law in the resisting arrest but seriously who gave a :tugger: if the copper got a bit of breaky on his shirt? Assault with a cereal weapon. Yep shes a real danger to society.:jerry:

The family repeatedly asked for the HOUSE to be fenced not the pond.
They being responsible parents tried to rectify the problem but the land owner refused to let them.
Yes he wanted to level the section but have you noticed the time frame at all he was in no hurry at all.
What you suggest would have been a simple solution and maybe stopped a tragedy, shame not all have your forethought.

Somehow I don't doubt you've had a lot of contact with druggies..
Just what exactly is your point, that people on here are 'treehuggers' for supporting a judge who put some mongrel who no doubt has an extensive criminal history behind bars for 2 weeks for chucking a plate at a cop, spitting at him and resisting arrest?
The treehugger approach would surely be the one you advocate, that the cop should just wipe the spit off his face, pick up the plate make her another bowl of cereal while apologizing profusely for obstructing the flight of the original bowl. Hopefully he will learn to respect the sanctity of the criminals home and never again try and arrest someone who isn't keen on the idea.

Well your joining of the dots was in a very crooked line indeed.
Maybe you've been around a fair share of druggies too.
But that I could only speculate.
My point was that the judges comments for being spat at is stupid plain and simple, yes it may be disgusting but he should have focussed on the fact that resisting an office in thier duty is not acceptable.
Personally I'm all for Capital/Corporal punishment and caning back in schools and people being responsible for their own actions.
Yes her actions led her to be prison, but seriously is that worth our tax payers money for a measly two weeks, two years might have been better, anyway wouldn't making her clean up after Llamas have been a little more ironic and cheaper.
O BTW I never called everybody treehuggers only some, if you take offence at that that's your perception problem not mine.
And my point.....
Go back to the start you might notice I actually stated that the judges sentences were pathetic, that I still stand by, regardless of what crime was/is committed they still only ever seem to get a little smack on the hand instead of a proper punishment.

Along with others on here I doubt very much that you have been as involved with drug addicts as you claim. Anyone who has any knowledge of the types of diseases that can be passed on by way of saliva even amongst the healthy let alone junkies that may be infected with AIDS would certaihnly not have the cavalier attitude to being spat on as you do.
Just to enlighten you http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/d/diseases_contagious_from_saliva/subtypes.htm
Even though the possibility of catching any of these from salivia may be remote the difference from saliva as against a globule of phlegm landing on your face is as big as mini chopper and real one.
As for your mentioning of urine from your daughter I doubt that there would not be many parents who have not been pissed on at sometime by their children when babies so the anaolgy is irrelevant.

You are ‘technically’ correct when you state that you can not be infected with AIDS. AIDS is the symptom of the HIV virus. However having said that it is not uncommon that AIDS is referred to as a virus and it was in line with this , for want of a better word ‘tradition’ that my reference to AIDS as a virus iimplied.
But then most of us who know what we are talking about know this
An example
AIDS is the last stage in a progression of diseases resulting from a viral infection known as the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV or AIDS virus). The diseases include a number of unusual and severe infections, cancers and debilitating illnesses, resulting in severe weight loss or wasting away, and diseases affecting the brain and central nervous system.
