An Invercargill woman is chuckling over a case of mistaken vehicle identity.

Shelley Kempton received a request for information from police on Wellington's Kapiti Coast over a speeding ticket recorded last Wednesday afternoon. The speeding vehicle was clocked doing 119 kilometres an hour on State Highway 1 at Waikanae, just north of Wellington.

Mrs Kempton says the registration number on the speeding ticket matched the registration number on a humble forklift at her workplace, Lindsay Carrying Company. She says the forklift's top speed is somewhere around 20 kilometres an hour.

Mrs Kempton says how things have got so mixed up is a mystery.

"We've got absolutely no idea. It is a Toyota forklift, it may have been a Toyota car, but there's really not a lot of similarities between a car and a forklift."

Mrs Kempton says the usual forklift drivers, her husband Roger and the company owner, have denied going on any kind of Waikanae joyride. She says the infringement and a bounty notice are going on the office wall.

"If anyone that comes into our depot can identify the driver that took it to Waikanae, then yeah, they'll be up for a reward for sure," she jokes.

Police have asked for the notice to be shredded.

People do that to drive off from gas pumps. I mean it's really often to see a drive off's plate reading a forklifter.
