Christchurch Ride/Picnic suggestions

So Mrs Oakie and I have decided to go for a picnic today. Ideally about 50 minutes to a nice picnic spot by a river via good biking roads. Ashley Gorge would be ideal if it weren't for the bees that seem to abound there. Any other suggestions anyone?

yes for sure, we use the spot after working in the vinyards all day to cool off.
there is a playground there that kids can use as well
