View Full Version : another close call/crash

FROSTY
20th February 2005, 22:29
This evening heading home from work I had a close encounter of the automotive type.
straight bit of road. Headlight on. riding at the speed limit.
Hands covering the brake and clutch lever.
aproaching a sideroad on my left with a car heading towards me slowing and pulling into the middle of the road. Cars on the left of him on the same road.
I got eye contact with the dude so all good.
Then he hauls the wheel round and turns in front of me.
On the brakes as hard as I can and down a gear the ol XJ is making them lil screech screech noises of a tyre about to skid.
Almost stopped but not quite I plowed into the side of the car with my front tyre denting the door. The bars twist bars sideways. Feet slam on the ground and Im sitting there staring in the window at the guys missus.
They stop and check the tyre colored dent in the side of their shiney blue commodore.
His excuse--"ohh I thought you would stop for me"
Sheesh.
Damage to the bike-.005mm of tyre rubber removed from the front tyre. damage to me -A couple of sore feet from the suden slam on the ground.
fuck that was close.
ANYPLACE ANYTIME -IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU.

You know those emergancy glass-breaking hammers... the red things that clip into the holders... could you mount one of those to a fuel tank very easily?

an event like this might then go:

Brake, swerve, blow out their window, accelerate like hell

Umm thanks for the concern her folks. In the light of day a couple of things,
Thank gosh I ride mostly fingers covering the levers -makes up for my slow reactions. Thank gosh for decent rubber and a bunch of panic stop practice on this bike.
Ohh --and yea aint it cool that in a bike/car encounter car came off second best
anybody oyut n about in auckland today -look out for a blue late 90's comodore with a big black dent in the passenger door.
Ohh the capper on it all--Last I heard his missus saying to him as I rode off-
"I told you not to go'

I find that doesn't work, just watch their wheels and you'll be fine.

... I got eye contact with the dude so all good....

That was your mistake right there.

You might have thought you had eye contact, he was more than likely looking straight past you.

This is something we should all take heed of - do a search through the forum and see how many people have been knocked off by a driver they'd swear black blue "saw me because I had eye contact, so it was 'all good'"

DON'T think for a second that alleged eye contact means you can proceed through an intersection safely. Treat all cagers like they're out to murder you and you'll last a lot longer with your rubber side down.

 A capper indeed! Love that bit - and I can imagine that he got a bit of an earful about how she could have been injured if you hadn't braked so hard (which she could well have been, if you'd done the flying headbutt through her window...)
Good to hear you're alright, but bloody annoying all the same.

21st February 2005, 08:23
Yep, never trust what you think is "eye contact", been there -done that, the dude on the side road on my left looked straight at me (I was on my push-bike) but I had an inkling (sp) he hadn't seen me so I moved out towards the centre line, sure enough he pulled out and if I had been on my original track he would have cleaned me up.
As he had his window down I pulled alongside and just said "Careful" and the bugger near shit himself, pulled over up the road and got out the car holding his chest saying "shit, sorry mate, never saw you"
WTF I was the ONLY item on his right that was moving!

The 'perceived threat' thing would have made a difference in this case i.e. big truck.

Glad to hear you are alright and reacted quick enough to avoid much harm.

A similar thing happened to me one morning, I was lanesplitting and this crazy kid on a scooter (wearing school shorts, shirt, roman sandels and a scratched up helmet with no visor) just pulls out infront of me and stops, I slammed on breaks and came to a screaching halt about 10cm from him.

Would expect it from a car, but not from somebody on two wheels aye.

Would expect it from a car, but not from somebody on two wheels aye.

Yeah Right! I nearly got taken out last week while lane splitting by another rider who decided that the cars were a mobile chicane. The other rider was splitting across one lane to my right when he spotted that a tiny advantage could be gained by cutting across (at right angles) the front of a car and into the gap that I was splitting through. Would have t-boned me apart from the fact that I saw him coming and braked hard. Don't think he knew I was there for a moment. It's not just cage drivers who don't see.

XTC
21st February 2005, 09:37
Glad you avoided that one (almost).
Typical d&^khead holden driver IMO.
Wonder if you can fit fzr400 calipers to your XJ like the FJ guys do?

Dr Bob
21st February 2005, 09:47
If you have the guys details you could always claim that the forks are bent. I would imagine factory parts from Japan for your bike would amount to more than the thing was worth, get it written off then buy it back.

you must be one scary looking beast!!

hopefully near misses like this teach cagers, and us as well, of the dangers of pulling out into a seemingly empty road. Always check once more to be certain, and always expect the bugger to decide to turn in front of you.

Hear where you're coming from dude,I figure I'm processing information pretty darn fast-as does every biker.I was on the brakes as a reaction to his wheels twitching that extra bit to get into the sideroad.

I agree... but what I expect and what I experience out there are two different things. I quite like the Peter Brock approach - work on driving (in our case riding) perfectly. When you get that right you will be safe/start winning etc.

Unfortunately there are others on the road that may not share the same mindset or experience.

Frosty, glad to hear you're intact dude.

He's a tadd Upset that I reported the "incident" to the cops
He's also a tadd upset that the person going down the road alongside him saw it all and just happened to be a customer. She couldnt believe he did it.
Bugger me --the damage to my front tyre and rim may just be a little bit worse than I initially thought.

glad you're ok frosty, this sort of atttitude from car drivers pisses me off, doubtless the guy has never ridden a bike, they just don't have 4 bloody wheels to brake on , I hope your forks aren't bent or the seals leaking after your encounter, i would think it wouldn't do much for the front end of your bike eh, make him pay for your tyre etc

Ive dealt with this a million times. I (until 2 weeks ago) was a claims handler for the third biggest insurer in NZ

point to note. Speeding cant be proved in court therefore the argument is invalid. Do you know who he is insured with and what his rego is? Ive got freinds in high places and I might be able to help you out

*edit also worth noting that If he is at fault for the accident (which he is) all you do is get his details and lodge a claim with your insurer. they wont charge you an excess nor alter your premiums, they will fix your bike and then send a bill to the other company.

Im the insurance guru :)

That's even better. Get an estimate for a new rim, new tyre, steering head bearings and Forks. Send the estimate to him as a claim, and its up to him to either pay up or forward it on to his own insurance company.

Frost Mutual? PT I assume
then call up X company and tell them your uninsured and their client was at fault for failing to give way. they will send you out a claim form and they will handle your repairs.
you can jepordise a claim or not get a full refund if you go ahead and get repairs done before an assesor has had a look at the bike and the repairers quote.

ps:
by any chance is his insurer AA,SIS,Sun Direct, AMP, State, NZI, IAG or Vero?
