View Full Version : Maintenance costs?

So ladies (and gents, I know there are a lot of you out there that read what goes on in Biker Angels that "maintain" yourselves!), how much would you estimate you spend on your general maintenance per month? Do you have your nails done? Waxing? Tanning? Hairdresser? Clothes/shoes/handbags/sunglasses? Gym membership? Etc etc?
How much would you consider a reasonable amount to spend on yourself in a month to look "presentable"?
For example, I only get my hair cut once every six months (I used to get my hubby to trim it for me even!) and coloured about once a year, so in that case the cost of getting my hair done monthly would amount to about $24 for instance. I do my own nails, epilating and can handle being white but occasionally splash out on a $20 bottle of fake tan, don't have a handbag or shoe fetish (unless you count motorcycle boots) and probably spend on average about $80 on clothes a month, not too much considering some women wouldn't be seen dead in anything that didn't have the appropriate label and price tag to match.:bash:
How about you gals/guys? What are your maintenance costs? Would you consider yourself high or low maintenance?:sweatdrop

Hmm.... Think I might be "average" maintenance!

Well, I spend:

$38 fortnight on the gym
$25 haircut once a year max.
$10 max on shampoo and conditioner a month. I only buy the stuff on sale.

I go to the gym so that I dont have to buy new clothes next season, though on average I would replace some work clothes every 2nd year. I only buy 2 pairs of shoes max a year for owrk and they're always the cheapest pair at #1 shoe warehouse. I only replace these when the others are so broken that I can not wear them. I live in my jandals, doc martins and sneakers when im not riding.
I buy the cheapest pack of razors and use budget shaving cream - it works fine! Helath basics moisturiser on special costs less than $5 and it works fine.

I dont have an image to keep up so I dont ahve to buy fancy clothes, I always try and buy clothes that will last multiple seasons. I hate this fucken 80's craze ATM, it was bad enough being made to wear them when I was younger!
So yeah, all my money goes on bikes and booze.

I would hate to think how much I spend on bikes, racing and engines though!!

Hi my name is Tina and I am an ex-high maintenance girl :)

Used to have six weekly hairdresser visits that cost an average of about $120 per visit....I get bored very quickly with the colour of my hair!! Now that I have gone to the darker side I just buy a colour from the supermarket/chemist and do it myself so about $20 every third month.

Gym membership has not changed $750-$799 per year….I have a love/hate relationship with the gym! I have to go to the gym so that I can carry on eating KFC!!

Clothes are my weakness ….. I wouldn’t have battered an eyelash at purchasing a $89 T-shirt. Yes I am a label basher! But now that I own a bike and house my priorities, or should that be spending ability, have changed considerably. I can’t remember the last time I had a retail therapy session though :weep:

The last couple of months I have been getting a lot of flack from work re: noisy/too long/too baggy pants so I may have to go shopping. Will probably spend about $30 - $50 on a pair of pants …used to spend $80 - $180.

Make up was also a weakness….I have oodles of lipstick and eyeliner and eyeshadow that I have purchased and worn only a couple of times. I used to buy Lancome foundation at $79 a pop every two months!! Now it is probably closer to $40 every two months.

Nails? nup....never really got into that. When I do put nail polish on (in a rare girlie moment) I feel like my nails are suffocating so I pick it off

Not a shoe type of girl at all, and like Str8 Jacket I only buy a pair for work from #1 Shoe Warehouse and I too only replace when broken. I do love sneakers/skate shoes, my feet HAVE to be comfy. Every time I have worn heels I have fallen over :o I don’t own a handbag and I never will!!!

Hmmm I go to the gym $18 a week

Whatever shampoo/conditioner on sale

I do spend whatever on skin care, although it usually lasts 6 months. I tend to get my mum to buy make-up/perfume for birthday/xmas when she goes overseas

I don't buy clothes that often, but op shops/outlets are my favourite, no.1 shoes is also good. I don't mind wearing second hand clothes, some of the best dressed people I know do and others that spend thousands don't look that good in my opinion.

I don't get my hair cut that often either...probably 4-6 months, I usually get rather bored with my hair colour so I dye it alot, I have taken to using packet because I do it about every 2 months. But they are usually only $15

I like to think of myself as 'english rose' - 5 years in Dunedin has ruined any colour I may have had, so I just don't bother. Melanoma is also a big deterrant for me

God there is so much .... ok

$2000 for two years gym membership up front ... one off

$60 every 5 weeks for hair (I like to keep it short)

$20 for dying hair prolly every 2-3 months plus $20 tip for whoever wants to do it for me.

$100-200 every six to nine months on shoes for work etc

Clothes are on an as needed basis .. but last year prolly $1000 ish - I don't do lables but at my size I still like good gears. This includes new motorcycle stuff and I wear lots of free work t-shirts

My sis-inlaw and family bought me a voucher for the east day spa - yesterday I had a manicure and pedicure for $170 (it was great but not something I would do again cos fark me thats like 4 gas ups on the bike at least)

I do go and do waxing .. but not if the body is playing up ... so veet works at $16 every few weeks ...

and prolly other stuff that I am ignoring at the moment.

I actually consider myself medium maintenance ... there are loads of people way worse than me ... and way better!

Oh god - I am totally high maintenance. Funnily enough we were talking about this on the trip to Manfield over the weekend. My male friend was shocked!!!

$32 - fortnightly nails
$80 - monthly brazillian
$20 - monthly leg wax
$20 - monthly underarm wax
$8 - monthly eyebrow wax
$8 - monthy top lip wax
$180 - 6 weekly hair colour and cut

This is not counting shopping, facials and other things I do to feel 'pretty'!

Eeeeek, oh well, it's my money so I guess a girl will have it a girl will spend it ha

Well so far I'd say we're all pretty low maintenance!:niceone: (apart from prettybillie.... why not eh chick!!)
I did forgot a couple of things however.... I buy expensive hair products, but I am sure that because I use "good stuff" ie. salon only products, that my hair stays in pretty good condition and therefore doesn't need cutting and colouring so often.
I also buy good quality skin care products, you only get one face, zits are not that nice to look at and once you have wrinkles they're hard to get rid of!! I don't wear make-up very often, but the make-up I buy is again good quality, don't want to go out looking like a cheap hooker!!!:msn-wink:

Feck....I am starting to think I have gone the complete opposite. I don't buy any expensive face creams or cleansers anymore! Protex soap washes off make-up just fine and keeps break-outs at bay.

I'v never been that high maintenence. I'v taken on a monthly brazillian waxing ($50), but other than that, i don't use enuf of any beauty product to give a weekly or monthly cost. I found out guys love a girl to look naturally beautiful. So ditch the creams, make-up and over-priced lotions. That being said though, i go nowhere without my eyeliner. Besides, that way when there is a special occasion and you decide to doll up, the men you know will TRULY be drooling after you. My man hated me wearing makeup all the time, so i stoped, then new years came around, i got dolled up, and as his mate said 'a deer caught in the headlights'. LOL :D

Most of the clothes I bought recently have been motorbike/sport related, and I get my hair cut every 5 weeks, to ensure I don't get helmet hair.

I do my own hair (what there is of it) etc., and don't go to the dentist or doctor (unless I really need to, which is dumb, as I have medical insurance). I spend probably only a couple of hundred shekel-dollars on (non biking) clothes.
The vifferbabe, on the other hand, gets her hair trimmed every few weeks; that (plus product) costs $120-$250. Every other visit, she gets it coloured as well, which basically doubles the cost (if not more).
Clothes?
Well, one of her mantras is "I like shoes". She has tiny feet, and shoes don't last long. She has (at a guess) approximately 12 meelleeons of them. She has to look presentable and business-like for work, so she has some designer stuff that cost $1k/item (on sale!).
I try to not know what she spends; she earns nearly twice what I do, and I don't care if it makes her feel good.

I'm trying to decide if I should fork out to get my hair done, about $220, or if it should be considered one of those costs that come out of the "joint budget".
I pay for all my other products and clothes myself so don't really see why I should feel guilty paying for my hair to be done once every six month out of our joint account... especially when I cut hubby's hair for him. Especially when I know a lot of women who spend twice that on a pair of shoes or a jacket out of their "joint income".
hmmmm, I think it's more of a personal guilt thing as I'm sure he doesn't mind if I spend $500 odd on my hair a year.;)

Trust me on this, not every girl wants to...:blip:

Me, I am easy care kinda gal.

I buy good quality shampoo/conditioner, with the occasional salon product when I want to spoil myself.

Get my hair cut every 6 months or so, probably not for a year after the last hacker let loose on it to be fair

Too chicken shit for wax near my bits, a good quality razor does the same job IME.

Face stuff is not important now. Trudes it is true, once them wrinkles start there is no stopping them, a good cheap moisturiser works just as well as the expensive ones. I do my own nails.

I used to have a bit of a shoe thing, but trained myself out of it, now replace when worn, though I do buy "good" shoes, they tend to last a bit better than the cheapies.

Clothes, I buy as needed, work clothes are easy, corporate type when required, smart casul otherwise, down right scruffy at times :dodge:

Which tooth was it?

If it was a molar, no sympathy. I had one pulled a couple years ago for all of $160, and the gap's not visible and never gives me any trouble. You pays your money and you takes your choices. (They tried to sell me a $5,000 implant to go in the gap. I roffled, and pointed out that I could just chew on the other side.)

Of course, if it was a front tooth, $2,500 was worthwhile to avoid having to move to Wainuiomata.

Although a front gap's a great place to tuck a durry. Could come in useful!

Then again, to quote the old adage, you haven't caught the bus yet... best you keep running, eh?

I'm real new to this so somebody tell me if I'm doing this wrong...
I used to wax but a recent budget required a downgrade to waxing myself or shaving and surprisingly either works for me. Never been a big makeup gal but can't leave the house without mascara - occasionally splash out on a lash tint if I have an overnight rally/trip so that I don't wakeup with panda eyes. I do have a salon cut every six weeks and my husband used to help me dye my hair with a supermarket colour - but alas he has buggered off. So I think I'll have to start getting my girl friends together for a night in every five weeks to dye each other's roots.

Trudes, I love your LOTR animation :)

Low maintenance I reckon...

Get my sister to cut my hair.
Colour it maybe once a year when I feel like a change and can be bothered, with $20 dye from supermarket.

Don't wear makeup. Don't wear perfume (was given some at Xmas by grandma who wants me to be more sophisticated!). Don't do my nails, or anything girly really.

I receive moisturiser as gifts at a rate faster than I use it. If I do need to buy something I'd rather get something good and use it less, though.
Currently washing with cheapish body soap from supermarket. Will replace it with something nicer, but I still use it sparingly.
Deodorant lasts me a while, I do use it though!!
Generally use just shampoo, or 2in1, about once a week. Don't go through that too fast either.

No wax/anything. Maybe a razor blade every year or so!?

Use a mooncup (got it for Xmas!), so no more 'sanitary' costs.

I do quite like clothes though, and have a tendency to pay for quality (but not branding) for items that need it, and happy to go cheapo for things that don't matter so much. I don't do fashion or seasonal shopping though, so it's not like I have to buy much.

Shoes I go for quality but I wear until they break or leak or whatever. Don't do heels. If I want something pretty I'll go for supercheap at #1 shoe warehouse, 'cause I know I won't wear them enough to make it worth it ! (Though I have worn some pretty cheap boots to death and beyond.)

Can't think of anything else I could do but don't!! Oh, never had a facial or anything weird like that. (Um, not a facial treatment.)

I do my own bikini line

That kinda sharing is just cruel John

Yes I love my foot spa I know its clased as one of the top waste of money items.
mmm I have one of those stored in my ceiling I think and yes I remember how much I did enjoy it. Especially with the peppermint fizzy gel stuff...ooo tingle tingle

$18.95 per doz Steinies most days (gotta look after ya bod and take on plenty of fluids).

$11.50 for a packet of Dunhill Red, as the other hand gets lonely.

Sorted.

 you sir are all class - stop it I'm getting excited.

Do it. If he had more hair he'd be using a hairdresser and racking up that expense. Though if you want a cheaper do we got a set of clippers..only got the #1 comb though :chase:

$10 a month paid to pussy so he wont do my bikini line

THAT'S money well spent

Low maintenance.

Shower a couple of times a week, shave, wipe my butt and throw on the odd dose of underarm or cologne for a special ocassion. Haircuts done for nothing by my good lady wife and I don't give a crap about staying up with fashion trends.

WOW! You wipe your butt?! Geez you ARE high maintenance

Feminine hygiene products have not been mentioned either, now if there ever was a captive market those manufacturers have it. What a friggen crock of shit those prices are!

Thank god for Depo Provera. I haven't had to bother with that nasty lady thing for years and although my bone density might be deteriorating at a rapid pace the freedom from that whole palava is soooooo good

What do you use? Napalm?

tee hee hee...he does have very course looking fur...oops I mean hair  BTW referring to the stuff on his upper chest...no I haven't been checking out his carpet

Mmmme too...exactly what I thought at first :puke:

As for upkeep of this old girl.

$37 monthly for kickboxing.
Haircut every 6 or 7 months...any more and the mop grows too damn fast.
Perfumes - love them! But given I can't justify the expense of the ones I like I generally just hang out for my birthday and hint like mad.
Creams and lotions - have sensitive skin so tend to try to avoid putting anything on my skin as it just reacts. Face - plain old Nivea tinted SPF moisturizer...lasts ages though as any time I am going on the bike I don't put anything on my face...as I ride every day that means I don't put it on much.
Did spend $60 on a foundation for 'work' but well any time I put makeup on I feel like my skin is suffocating and it just feels like I am wearing a mask.
My money is generally spent on my little boys maintenance. I just love buying him cool digs and new shoes etc..and his clothes always look good on him...me I am picky and HATE buying clothes. Love op shopping though - some of the coolest items I own came from op shops AND I find it hilarious when little Miss Policy Analyst in her plain as fuck and boring to boot, white shirt, grey skirt (from Que, or Kirks or wherever) and plain black heels at a total outfit pricetag of around $300 compliments me on my $20-30 one from the op shop

I hate spending money on work clothes and can't be arsed with having a draw full of expensive potions that I wouldn't end up using....I would much rather buy a brand new pair of good jeans frankly.

hmmmm, I think it's more of a personal guilt thing as I'm sure he doesn't mind if I spend $500 odd on my hair a year.;)

I don't mind..............

I say go for it and then give him a BJ to stop the guilts ;)

Love my mooncup! Initial outlay was accompanied by a sharp intake of breath but I reckon I've saved a fortune in tampons in the last three years. Only downside I reckon is you don't get much warning that you need to empty - you know how you a tampon gives you a five minute warning 'gurgle'? Well if you feel a gurgle with a mooncup it's probably already too late!

Well, for any one who has ever had to clean out a septic tank or been to a "shit farm", you may look at tampons in a different light. It's your own blood what's to be scared of?

Depends if you're grossed out by that stuff - it needs a quick wash in the shower each morning and then boil it for five mins (in a pot on the stove, with baking soda if you like) ready for next time. Easy peasy.

Oh god - I am totally high maintenance. Funnily enough we were talking about this on the trip to Manfield over the weekend. My male friend was shocked!!!

$32 - fortnightly nails
$80 - monthly brazillian
$20 - monthly leg wax
$20 - monthly underarm wax
$8 - monthly eyebrow wax
$8 - monthy top lip wax
$180 - 6 weekly hair colour and cut

This is not counting shopping, facials and other things I do to feel 'pretty'!

Eeeeek, oh well, it's my money so I guess a girl will have it a girl will spend it ha

Actually... forget the Nair. I reckon Roundup is your friend...

I'm not just low-maintenance, I'm CHEEEP!

On the rare occasions when I get my hair cut, I get it done by the trainees at Serville's Academy. $20 for the cut, and it's just as good as you would get in a top salon (in fact better than a lot of the salons I've been to, due to close supervision by the tutors).

I've also just discovered that I can get a FREE manicure every Friday at the shop under the Rialto Cinema in Newmarket. They are promoting a certain brand of ceramic nail-file and have a manicurist on site to demonstrate, and she does a full manicure while giving her sales pitch!

I don't dye my hair. It's too dark to show dyes anyway and I'm not keen on bleaching it to death just so I can re-dye it.

I buy my hair and face products from the specials bin at Living Nature (near Kerikeri). http://www.livingnature.com/ Amazingly wonderful, top quality products, but I don't pay more than $10 an item! The exception is my moisturiser (since Living Nature stopped putting sunscreen in theirs). Now I use Skinfood SPF15 ($7.50 - lasts me a few months).

I hardly ever wear makeup. Just Living Nature eye liner ($10 special again) and Trilogy Everything Balm for the lips.

My skin's too sensitive for waxing, so I shave my legs using my partner's Primal Earth Organic Shave Gel (from the supermarket - less than $10 a tube, lasts for ages coz you only need a tiny bit).

I make my own soap. Ingredients are cheap and I can choose what they smell like by using different essential oils. As a body lotion I use almond oil with a couple of drops of essential oil mixed in. (Also means I don't need perfume.)

I buy clothes second hand, or from outlet stores (I have one near my work that often has Max and other brand-name clothes, but removes the labels for sale).

Oh, and if you're not keen on the mooncups, I can recommend trying moontime products: http://www.moontime.co.nz/ It's like the difference between using disposable nappies for a baby and cloth ones. We're slowly waking up to the idea that cloth products are healthier and more sustainable for our babies - here's the same princliple for women.

Self maintenance: I shave every two or three days, shave my head every week or two, the odd eyebrow hair gets plucked (along with errant nose hair), I've been known to trim my pubes (and I've also been know to set them on fire) and I trim my toe nails when my tootsies poke through my socks. Apart from a minimum of one shower a day (depending on workload) what more does a man need?

Any more than that would indicate to me that you're a prissy fag.
