Eddie I think there's still some debate about Sunday/Monday; some may come back monday and some Sunday; but yes we're headed up Friday for a gentle cruise!
We can have a good chat over it at Toppys lunchtime tomorrow (if we can concentrate that is! ).

have been going through the ride links, done by motoxnut.
looks like 2 days will be close to 700kms, give or take a km
then depend which way we go up,
and which way home.aprox 550kms / 7 hrs travel each way.
= aprox 1800 kms give or take a km.
this only aprox direct routes. not taking in for stops to rest my ass and to wait for you to refuel.

An E-07 on the rear will get you anywhere.
Just stick something MT21/D606/TKC80 style on the front.

true but braking on loose surfaces is vastly better with something meaty (E09, 606) on the back.

Hey Joe, i went through from the Owhango end on Sunday which is supposed to be the more difficult direction and had no worries at all.
My rear tyre is currently a 3/4 worn IRC GP110 which is a close pattern peice of crap like a Bridgestone Trailwing,so even in the wet you should have no problem with your E-07s.
Fishers track is actually more wet/boggy than the 42nd but is mostly downhill anyway and not steep, mainly second gear riding so you should be okay as long as you dont fill you fuel tank right up :Pokey: and add another 100 kgs weight to the bike.

So as I suspected, the Trailwings that came on my DR definitely have to go before the KCR! There's no chance I am going to be able to be a cheap git and leave them on is there - damn damn damn!!!! :weep::weep:

I'm on the NordieBoy plan with an E07 on the rear and an MT21 on the front - works for me.
D606 also a cool tyre (got 6,000KM out of the one I just removed) but I use my DR most days to get to work so the knobbly seemed like overkill.

well i have to say, that a little extra weight, has improved the bikes handling, when i took daves bike to the alloy shop, my feeling on it, it felt very loose,to control.
i guess i have ajusted to my bikes extra weight,
i put the most fuel in i had ever, last weekend, around the coast, with a nearly full tank, i was a bit worried about the lose metal to come, but it was fine, you could feel the weight on the open road, on the corners, but its ok.
cheers for the heads up on track conditions, im going to risk it, as a spare set of tires are not on the budget for now....

I was thinking of getting some more knobbly tires for this ride, but after a few rides in the sand/gravel with the Sahara 3's I am pretty happy with them.
I will admit they are probably not going to be the best in the mud, but where is the fun in it being easy :msn-wink:

You would've hated how light and skittish the KLX was on gravel then matey! I always felt like there was no weight pushing down thru the front wheel even when standing up - it was like the darn thing was just skating over the top of the loose gravel all the time! I know it was probably just my amateur technique but still used to freak me out!

So the Friday and Monday around this are 2 of those days.

I have been trying to get as much riding under my belt on the new bike before this ride but so far between being busy with work and my bike being in the shop every couple of days, its not quite going to plan.
Had a bit of sand riding practice, but not much else, I really need to get into some dirt/mud, and clock up some km's in the gravel.
Which is hopefully happening this weekend, assuming I get my bike back before then.

You could call it teething issues. I figured it was nothing major, but the bike has been in the shop for 3 days now, starting to get worried. At least they gave me a nice bike to ride while mine is in the shop

I am coming down from Auck, but heading down to just outside Hamiltron on the friday (afternoon/evening), so its only a quick trip on saturday AM. I figure its going to be a big enough ride without getting up early enough to ride from Auck.

As for the time, google maps says it will take me about 58mins to cover the 65km to Otorohanga, so I was planning to leave about 7:30am, but you are the local, what time do we need to leave to make it to Otorohanga by about 8:30am?

If you have a bit more time this route is much more fun and mostly gravel.
done it a few times and it takes 2 1/2 hours from port waikato at reasonable pace.

Garry W suggested that we meet at Shell Mana early e.g. 8-8.30 to be confirmed later.
The farm manager wants us to travel from the Paraparas and come out onto the river road; there will be directors of the trust doing a tour of the property that morning so good rider behaviour will be essential.
I will have to sign a document absolving the land owners of any responsibility of injury acquired whist on the property.
We need to be on the track before 11am.

Which ever bike suits you, it should be doable on either and I've done the Sunday tracks on my R80G/S with no issues. I'm taking my R100GS PD this time so you wouldn't be the only big bike there on the GS, not that a DR BIG is small either.

hi - I have a similar choice of machine to you - IMO the answer to your Q depends on your confidence on the 1150 including the tyres she is shod with - me I'm a cautious old fart who at this stage is favouring the lighter DR for the off road sections - Fisher's Track and 42nd Traverse to name two.
When tackling off road on my 1150 I like the confidence a sharp set to TKC80's give me.
It comes down to what you're most comfortable on - the 1150 will be fine on the gravel. Best wishes Aslan :scooter:

Hi Marks, Pete has said that the landowner wants us to start on the track no later than 11.00 am.
So i am planning to meet you all at the start on the Parapara`s at 10.45.

I'm considering heading to Wanganui after the track and doing some exploring (for some bizarre reason I want to go to Taunoka and I want to ride Kiwi Rd etc again) and heading up HW43 to join up with everyone for Sunday morning as I'm really keen to do Fishers and the 42nd.

The rest of us were going Friday morning to do the Matahiwi Track, get to Otorohanga for Friday night, then Saturday Pirohinga etc, then Sunday Fishers Track & 42nd Traverse.

I'll be doing the Matahiwi Track with you guys on Friday and then probably heading off towards Wanganui. Planning on spending Fri night at Hawera or Stratford which then gives me all of Saturday to dick around in the Whanamomona area before catching up with you lot o Sat night or Sun morning

and when i get lost i can follow the sound of that loud roar
Gidday, yeah it will be good to see 2 Bigs together. What sort of tyres are you running on yours at the mo I've got a Pirelli MT60 140/80/17 and a dunlop trailmax on the front. I really really want to do the Whangamomona Rd track but yes Moki Rd has certainly got my attention.
If I have a poke around the area on Saturday we could do the best bits on the way back on Monday
Where are we planning to stay on Sunday night?
1 Plenty of cabins available at Taumarunui motor camp $25pp - which means we won't have to carry our gear on Sunday.
2 Whangamomona Pub $65pp + bar menu. Means more time exploring southwards on Monday.
Aslan what is your recommendation since you rode the TTTT last year?

are you still going to be using those racing slicks you mistakenly call adventure tires? - could be lots of slick clay/mud on these detours :wari:
Taumarunui motor camp most probably makes the best sense - but I'm easy

Yeah yep thats what we call the loop track, its a farm track that loops all the way back and comes out by Marco school, would have done it today but wasn't sure if there was enough oil in the water to get around. Have done it quite a few times its a really good track on that side as its on the station and not DOC , there are whale fossils in one of the creeks and you climb up onto the top of a ridge and can see for quite a way.

Yeah I saw & responded on other thread heehee!
Will be great mate!
I'm pretty sure I will be going now I know there's no obvious spinal area fractures so just tissue trauma to heal enough to ride. Mostly the muscular stuff is now feelin pretty good BUT those 2 points on my back in the centre are now likely ligament type damage so touch & go for whether they will be healed or not BUT I guess prob ok to ride but will need to be very careful on the ride if still a bit sore/weak in those 2 areas. I'll keep everything crossed. Also got phone call with doc tomorrow to follow up post x-rays so will see if he can get me in for some physio on ACC sharpish maybe????

I used to swim alot for fitness and loved it; back in UK 4 lunchtimes per week but have been lazy b*gger since been here! I'm not fast but my ex athletics background meant I was always pushing myself to improve, which kept it fun for me. I think back needs to heal a bit first due to the work your back muscles do in swimming, but yeah would be a good plan I think!

The Taumaranui Holiday Park people likely don't know, given one person books then fills the cabin. At this stage I have one bed left (in a 4 berth) but have offered it to young1. He is to let me know Monday if he is going to stay, so still a possibility.

It was high time the KTM got a clean. I decided after last Easter weekend that it needed some much loving care and attention. I took the wheels off, got the rear replaced with a Pirelli I used for the CCA last year. It was still in very good nic, especially after riding from Te Aroha, Wellington, Te Aroha, wet weather, dry weather and mud on the tracks.
I took off the brake rotors, cleaned them, repacked the cush rubbers, they were tight as still! 32000Km on the clock, brakes looked good.
Swingarm is nice and clean now, sprocket looks good, although this is only a couple of thousand Km old, as is the chain.
The whole dash came out, the odometer and Tacho were taken off, all cleaned in behind the dash, wiped, wd40'd and it looked good. I still haven't solved the slowly fading digital display, although after putting the whole thing back together and testing it, it looks good. Maybe I have solved it with the cleaning, lubricating.
I have lost the neutral light, but I knew this as I pinched the wire and it don't work, I think it might actually be a switch because it works from the speedo side but not the bike side? Hmm. Not to worry, I am used to big traillies so will just feel for neutral and use the clutch lever as one does....
The pictures show it a little dirty still, damn....
I useda toothbrush too, it has taken me 8 hours all up, it was pretty feckin dirty!!

I'm a wuss - already decided I'll be passing on the 42nd and Fishers - done them both already on my DR - plan on riding my 1150GS - prolly leave a Tourance on the rear with TKC up front.
Also - given the weather forecast I'm a doubtful for the Matahiwi - have riden in the first 7km uphill from Matahiwi and there's a lot of Papa Slab - my GS becomes a 250Kg sled on wet papa - I'm not worried about breaking the GS - more worried about breaking me - things take longer to heal at 60 and beyond! :scooter:
Look fwd to seeing y'all Friday - God willing - and yes for those wanting company on the ride South on Sunday I'll be heading home from the point where others head into the Fishers.

Ciao Aslan
Aslan, do you know what kind of time you are planning to start the trek back to Welly on Sunday and rough idea of when you plan to be back in the Hutt?
Actually I didn't realise or twig that to head back Sunday we may miss the 42nd AND Fishers - bit bummed about that tbh!

Hi Paladin aka Dave - I think Mark aka MotoXNut has planed to be at Owhango (end of the 42nd) by 2pm - that's about my target time for heading South - at that rate it's still 5 - 6 hours to home - especially if we come down the Turakina or Whangehu Valleys.
Depending on your physical state (post last injury) you may be wise to look carefully before leaping into Fishers (mucho Papa) & 42nd more technical IMO - having a lighter machine (your DR with 606's and 14T engine sprocket) will certainly help.
Cheers S

Yep, hear what you're saying. Neck & back are definitely feeling better BUT turning head to the right is still painful down left side of neck; lower back mostly ok, however those 2 points/areas between shoulder blades basically in the centre/spinal area are still VERY sore, eg picking up kiddies still hurts! All in all means I am hopeful to be a go but trying hard to be sensible about it. The LHS of neck issue will probs be fine, but tbh am still very concerned about the centre of back issues; doesn't feel right!
The bike is basically ok to go; gotta fit the new rear DinkyWinkas indicators. Wanna get front wheel balanced too if poss. Really should replace the weakened main riser bolt on LHS that Paul straightened but this week has gone to hell with being dumped with the girls full-time after my ex up and scarpered to OZ at the last minute last Friday for 9 days while kids on school holiday and she not even back til wee hours of Monday(the day they go back to school/playcentre!) - nice move huh! Out -bl**dy-rageous behaviour!!! Guess she didn't wanna see her kids on their school vacation! Still, straw that broke camels back for me - she won't be getting any opportunity to treat me & girls like that again i can assure you - I've taken steps to ensure THAT!!!!
Will keep my fingers crossed for the weekend and advise you matey!

Dave we are starting early on the sunday morning and not doing much gravel rds that day in order to finish at Owango by 2.00pm at the latest. That should give you enough time to get back to welly before 8.00pm
Fishers track is all down hill ( not steep ) in the direction we are doing it and with decent knobblys on you will find the 42nd no problem on the DR. When i went through a few weeks ago there was a 4wd club going through with SHINY road going vehicles and they were having no problems.

MotoXNut & K Slider (and others) - I inend to leave my decision re Matahiwi and Central Plateau tracks til Thurdsay evening - I should still be able to get a TKC rear tyre fitted to my beemer if necessary. Key thing for us all - I submit - is to enjoy the ride and ride to our abilities :sweatdrop

I agree with you on this one, if it is going to be very wet the 42 could become quite tricky with the river crossing and the few steep sections.
But the fishers trail would be an easier option to complete.
I am going to stick with the Saraha tires and pick the trails to match the conditions.

I will be doing the same with regard to the Matahiwi track as i beleive that it will be the most challenging if wet, and i dont wont to ride all that way and then have to do it on my own :crybaby:
Metservice long range forcast has improved since this morning so hopefully it will stay fine for us ( fingers & left ball crossed ). :gob:
