Dave we are starting early on the sunday morning and not doing much gravel rds that day in order to finish at Owango by 2.00pm at the latest. That should give you enough time to get back to welly before 8.00pm

Fishers track is all down hill ( not steep ) in the direction we are doing it and with decent knobblys on you will find the 42nd no problem on the DR. When i went through a few weeks ago there was a 4wd club going through with SHINY road going vehicles and they were having no problems.

Cheers Stephen. If we are back in Welly before 8pm at latest that should work for me!

I will be doing the same with regard to the Matahiwi track as i beleive that it will be the most challenging if wet, and i dont wont to ride all that way and then have to do it on my own :crybaby:

Metservice long range forcast has improved since this morning so hopefully it will stay fine for us ( fingers & left ball crossed ). :gob:

Agree Mark - in fact the Matahiwi is the one I'm most interested in doing

I will definitely be looking for a spare bunk if anyone wants to let me in?
Pretty please anyone?
Despite this weather, the traverse is still dry, it has been a very dry summer and the drainage is good.
With the amount of us on the traverse it will be fine as there is enough of us to lift, drag, carry and the creeks won't be too high to walk the bikes through if necessary. I would recommend that as well as the last time I did it on my Husaberg, the walk through helped as there are a few big nasty stones under that water.
We will be cutting it up and it will be cloudy, so walking could be the best option unless you are the first lucky bugger through!

Helpful comments Mark - re the accom send a PM to JunkmanJoe - I believe he may be able to help.

Re the 42nd - you up for pushing me and the Yellow pig up that steep sand trap I struggled up coming out of one of the creeks - (the one with the sharp turn following a steep descent) the last time we did this together?

You'll have me bringing the DR or fitting the TKC to the bimmer if you're not careful :wari:

Look forward to seeing you again - Oh and yes we'll need to be alert for any wire hawsers strung across tracks on the 42nd eh :bash:

In fact I did it there and back, I loved it so much. I took three guys from Switzerland through it on XT660's and they loved it! Wanted to pay me too...lol
I met them in Taumarunui when I went in for a tummy fueling...I convinced them and they all loved it!
Anyway, you will have more fun of course on the little machines but it is do-able, and yes, we will all pull the Sherman up the hill....
Just ride it and use the throttle, at least you know what is in store out of the corners...right?
Oh, that hawser has gone.....
I will have to look out for other hidden gems this time...

Sorry guys but I am now a non-starter for this ride! :crybaby:

Had follow-up call with my doc today, after describing particular area of pain I was having AND finding out it was in an area NOT x-rayed last Thursday  , he called me in asap. Apparently deep tissue damage, he highly recommends I take another 10 days rest at least and riding a bike for hours and particularly on gravel roads & tracks would be very unwise, let alone manhandling the bike in any awkward situations would probably result in more damage to ligaments, muscles etc.

So basically I am gonna take his advice and get healed up properly as those roads & tracks aren't going anywhere and I have a big goal of doing the South Island Invasion ride so don't wanna risk anything more serious happening at this stage.

Will miss not catching up with you guys and of course hope you all have a wicked weekend! Will look forward to the reports and pics and video(?)!!!

Sorry to not be coming but feel i need to follow docs advice especially as this is an ACC claim, so HTFU pills aren't gonna be any use!

If anyone still needs a cabin spot, get hold of Junkmanjoe as he will want to try fill my Fri & Sat nite spots! If he can't, no worries, I'll see him right cash wise of course!

Got a question for the collective re my front tyre and the potential weather.

What would be better, a 90% worn TKC 80, or a 20% worn Vee Rubber VRM163, an 80/20 tyre.

Anyone intending doing the Matahiwi track please PM me so we can coordinate meeting places.
Garry W suggested that we meet at Shell Mana early e.g. 8-8.30 to be confirmed later.

The farm manager wants us to travel from the Paraparas and come out onto the river road; there will be directors of the trust doing a tour of the property that morning so good rider behaviour will be essential.
I will have to sign a document absolving the land owners of any responsibility of injury acquired whist on the property.

We need to be on the track before 11am.

For the guys that havnt been on the river road You will get to ride the best part.

Cheers Pete.:woohoo:

Pete aka KSlider and others - are we confirming an 8am meet for an 8.30am 'off' from Shell Mana? thanks Aslan :woohoo:

Joe - assuming others coming from Wellington agree with the suggested 8.30 sharp departure from Shell Mana - I'd expect to be at the Church Cafe in Sanson around 9.30 - 10am. This is the info I've given GSers aka Gerard who'll be coming from Palmerston North.

Lovely morning in the 'naki eh - you checking out the Matahiwi? surely not a long ride from the 'naki

Well that was an awesome ride, filled up with 98 octane at Gull Wanganui and headed up the river Rd, no cars just me and the Rd.Found the Matahiwi track and went and had a look, gate was closed so turned around.Track is very very dry they have had no rain up there for a long time.Carried on up the river to pipiriki, they are tarsealing the hill out of here towards Ratehi and have done quite a few km so far, the rest of the gravel Rd had just been graded, ie he was 10min in front of me, that was alot of fun trying to stay upright:2thumbsup let the front down a little made it more managable.
Up thru the parapara's there is lots of roadworks had to wait 30min at one lot as women driver decided to cross over and pass grader = all 4 wheels off ground blocking road!!! Top of parapara's is being done to not many corners left.Stuck some more 98 in and roared home with a tail wind. Butt is abit sore tho:buggerd:

750cc with 29 Litres, what approx?
I find if I ride it hard, it is still good, what makes it really thirsty are the trails, the on and off revs and sitting around getting stuck...lol:2thumbsup
I am sure it will do over 600Km but will have to try one day...

:Playnice:I reckon it is going to be fine boys, Matahiwi, Traverse will be good. As you have all said, the rain was merely a small amount and given the conditions around the East coast and the rest of North Island, the rain hasn't made much of an impact on the ground.....

Fishers could be damp as most of the track is cut into the hillside so we will get some run off, but the clay should be good....

Saddle them steeds up boys, it will be a good one!

I got 260km for 15L of 95octane, this was fast highway speed and head wind(South easterly) bloody hard to hold on!!
Today with 98octane I got 200km with 11L that was the River RD Parapara's etc quite comfortable speeds:2thumbsup I love 98:banana:

OK - thanks Mark (aka MotoXNut) - call me a cautious old fart - on reflection - I think Mark is right - Make that 7.30am fuelled and good to go from Shell Mana.

GarryW & KSlider - I imagine you'll both be OK with this? Joe and Gerard - assume you're both watching and will make a call about joining us or doing the Whangaehu Valley with MarkS and AndyMac.

I can see considerable scope for confusion here - my aim is to reach the Matahiwi start in comfortable time for an 11am start. Otorohanga is a long way from the Whanganui National Park :2thumbsup

BTW, new rear dinywinkas are on the DR, to replace the smashed indicators, as of tonite so it's lookin all legal if I head out for a little consolatary blat at the weekend(on tarmac only tho!). New Arai helmet needs a proper test too I think, but from the little ride i did the other day to test for the front wheel speed shimmy in case Joe borrowed the black beastie, it has better air flow than the Shoei, ie doesn't lift your head at speed!! Tried to sort weakened Riser bolt tonite too, got old one out that Howie straightened only to find EDL sold me the wrong thread type(ie not fine thread) so had to put it back in. Its fine, just needs replacing before any major offroad action as its now a weak point I'm sure! Had a nice surprise; pulled air filter out and it was virtually clean - still gave it a shampoo & rinse anyway! since it was out already! The black beastie is lookin so well used bless her! Maybe Woodman & I should park our bikes next to each other on the SI Invasion Ride and just stand back and have a good laugh!

Collin and Haggis herded their big beasts through with hardly an incident :innocent: but aced all the really tricky stuff. To make them feel better I decided to make them feel better by falling off on the last climb.

It was great to see all the faces behind the screen names, next time I'll try to match them all up.

I just remember Junkman Joe's grin pulling up behind me on Eddie's R100GS, I think he liked it.

See you guys next time.

:wari: : Had an interesting ride home with Neil who also helped stand the big beasty up when the front washed out on the tarseal  how you say in Engrish "bucker". I have for sale one slightly damaged Shoei helmet if any one needs one :Punk:
Still managed to show enough skill to toss it on the same side so only one indicator damaged sorry Henry. See you all on the next one :done:

Colin - glad to hear you're OK after your 'oops' on the way home - cheers Stephen :scooter:

must be a story here Dino - did you head in to the 42nd or was the ankle injury one you were already carrying?

Hey - that's a nice DR Big you got there - great to meet you - cheers Stephen O

Did a u turn on the metal at the awakino pub on sat, didnt pay enough attention to the tiny slope down to the garden bar, locked and droped:bash:
bike landed on leg. bit gutted to miss the rest of the ride cause of a dumb little arse off:crazy: but hopefully make up for it this coming summer.

great meeting you, your one off the true gentlemans of ADV

Cheers Mark for organising the ride, it opened up alot of country I hadn't been thru before, thankyou very much.
Aslan, like Dino said it was great meeting you, you are a real gentleman and to handle that GS like that I have to give you a big thumbs up:Punk:
All the guy's I rode with on Friday and Sunday(the muddy dirty stuff)awesome bunch of guy's:rockon:
Had a little:Oops: myself when Colin and I were heading home, another drain caught me out Joe and swallowed me up so now the other side of the tank looks well used, it matches the incident in 42nd Traverse (that was heaps of fun tho!!!).
I'm off to give her a wash and tend to her wounds:bye:

Agreed, Me and Joe took the long way home and only got in at about 9:45 tonight. I think I clocked up 1780 km's for the 4 days.

Fridays trip up involved Matahiwi track and an inpromptu Fishers Track expedition for the Welly guys. I managed to run out of gas about 12km out of Rataehi, having got lost earlier in the day I'd covered more ground that the other guys and didn't quite make it. Big thanks to Nooles for some extra gas. I never got to buy you a beer.

Mark showed us some wicked local roads Saturday, including some beach antics, the exits mostly caught on video.

Sunday was the 42nd Traverse. Andy Mac managed to get a puncture on the way there which was fixed roadside. During the 42nd I got Joe to try out the GS, while I jumped on Aslans DR650 that Joe had. Joe didn't seem too keen to give me my bike back, could it be that he actually liked it?
After the 42nd most people went their separate ways, however JunkManJoe, Andy Mac, BMWRSNUT and another gent whose name I'm not sure of decided to go back to do Fishers again in the rain, they soon twisted my rubber arm to join them and MotoXNUT decided he couldn't be shown up by a heavy old BMW seeing as he was on a little 400 and so he better come too, and not 2 minutes before he had told me he was done and heading home.

Monday Joe and I decided to head down SH43 to Whangamomona, Joe hadn't been there and it had been 10 years or more for me. This then lead onto probably the hardest adv ride I've ever done, Whangamomona road, in the rain, after a day of rain. Slipprier(sp) than a greased slippery thing. I think it took us 3 hours to cover 20km's and my achievement of staying upright all weekend took a tumble or 3, plus Joe got majorly roosted pushing the GS out of a bog, had to be helped out of a bog, and took a couple of minor tumbles.

Photo's & vids are uploading. It will take a while as there are 240 something of them. They will be here. (http://cid-bb884029fa7d6889.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/Riding/2009-04-24%20to%2027%204%20Day%20King%20Country%20Ride)

:) The Whanga picture doesn't capture how steep that actually was.

On a Southern Coast ride recently I was standing next to MarkS while he was taking pictures.

Mark was heard to say, 'Have you noticed how everyone speeds up when they see a camera out?'
So if you start at pic 33 you can guess what happened.

A big thanks to Mark for organising such a great ride and fantastic road, the weather just made it more fun. Sorry I couldn't get to do the 42nd of Fishers as XR was playing up.
Didn't make it all the way home either, had to leave the bike in a farmer shed near Prionga, a big thanks to John on the BMW F800GS who spent a lot of time trying to get the bike going and then giving me a lift back to Auckland on the BMW. I went back in the car with a trailer to recover the bike, again a big thank you John

The 42nd Traverse. yea ha...:woohoo:

was so looking forward to ride this.
even better it was raining so knew it would be even more fun.
we headed off in to the unknowen for me.
met a group of mountian bikers at the start, we go first aye.... OK... shouldnt see them again....
deep in to the track buy first river crossing, herd a noise behind us.
WHAT THE :eek5: mountain bikers caught us up...shite.
i was lucky enough to have a blat on eddies big bad bemmer.....ohh so nice. its mine now.....not.

track was great, good down hill runs pleanty tricky slippy bits, and use ya head parts as well.
most enjoyed.

after lunch, rain was coming down quite nicely buy now.
so a few hardy silly buggers decided to do fishers track again in the rain....

was most fun i had in a long time.
lots a sweet mud, slippy clay, and i was taken out by a cowpad.... on the grass...
another great day in the saddle.

In wellington at the moment after a 2up ride down through Waikerimoana and a wet and windy blacktop 'adventure ride' over the Rimatucka's.
Thanks Mark for such a good weekend and your guidance through 42nd and a bit of a push up a slope .

Thanks Mark for leading a great adventure ride. I especially liked the 42nd. The GS Adv is a bit big for it and would be much better with a lower 1st gear. I'll try not to get so excited next time - still black & blue from my first fall going into 42nd.

I can recommend the GS Adv. All the electronics work and make a difference and it ate up the ks on the way down and home.

Thanks to guys who came with me over the Matahiwi track, sorry about the short distance and to mark who traveled so far for it.
The true track is impassable even by horse, if any body saw a drive on the left just after the concrete water tank, the track starts there and goes about 10 k, however there are 2 drops about 20 M 2k in with no way around.
The other partwas as we aproached the summit there was a track off to the right that eventually peters out but origionaly conected to the red shed.
Thanks to Andy Mac and bmwrsnut for the ride home Imade my meeting 30 mins late, Ihave since disabled the auto email down load feature off my work phone so it wont happen again.
I wont be doing much riding as I have to get my sons racecar ready for the summer drags.
Cheers everyone for a great weekend.

Yeah well, you should have seen what didn't make it on camera, the low side off the cow pat, the 15" roosts & throwing it down the hill on the Whanga road.

Geez I'd almost buy Paladin's DR over the state of this one now. :Pokey:

By the way, anyone want to buy a DR? honest Eddie's used bikes has one in the garage.

So what's the equation for the F800GS? Lots of Dollars minus R1150GS, minus DR650, plus ????, plus an undefined level of the good wife's tolerance levels. ;).

Actually, revise that: Lots of Dollars minus R1150GS, minus DR650, plus ????, MINUS the good wife. Nah - probably not a happening thing....

Better get that new car for her soon Stephen...

Bet in hindsight you wished you hadn't taken a ride...It just makes you lust after them. After all, you can't miss what you haven't tasted yet (mixing metaphors)

Steve's entirely right - I'm dammed fortunate to have good health two bikes - friends I can ride with and a supportive wife - but yeah it's nice to dream - whilst Steve's assessment of the equation is about right IMO - I'd be worried about breaking the F800GS if I dropped it - whereas that same concern is not there with the workhorse DR. Question - What happens when you have the flu but go on a three day adventure ride anyway.
Answer You get pnumonia and spend the next 5 days in bed.
( Eddieb `s fault for talking me into that 2nd lap of fishers track in the pouring rain ).

So now that im back in the land of the living, thanks to everyone for coming along and a BIG thanks to Nooles for doing the thankless job of being tail end charlie. I was probably a bit ambitous with the distance on the Saturday but i guess finishing in the dark made it more of an adventure.

Wicked photo's, You did say you'd find something to be my fault :innocent: though no arm twisting was required if I recall, the thought of an old BMW going somewhere you weren't going to was enough.

PM will be sent about getting full resolution copies of some of those.

Pete - I'm currently running an E07 on the rear of my DR - they offer reasonable (not startling) traction in mud and I expect they will last longer than a DOT knobbly like the D606 over the winter commuting months. Price about $145.
