View Full Version : cbr250RR wont start - loud clunk.

Howdy all

Went to jump on my bike this morning, hit that starter button and it goes "clunk" - one singular clunk

Could this be the starter motor? How can I check if the starter motor is working?

If there are any other things i should check please tell me.

I know the information is vauge here so ask me and i will tell you as much as I can.

I was riding the bike home from work last night, battery has charge.

Just cause you rode it home last night doesn't nessasarily mean the battery is charged. Modern batteries are designed to go and go and go, then pretty much all of a sudden die completely. Either that or if the starter is worn, it could be engaging in SLIGHTLY the wrong point. try moving the bike forward about 6 inches with it in gear then try starting again.

Put bike in gear, push it BACKWARDS. This may free a jammed starter clutch. Does the engine turn when you push the bike (ie the engines not seized ?) If the engine turns OK, then either the battery is too flat, or the starter clutch is jammed, or one pole of the starter is burnt out, or the starter drive is deranged.

agree with Ixion if the engine turns when in gear (might take a bit of pushing because of compression) you could try crashstarting if this is the case.

well i got it going, not to sure why its going.

I checked the battery -12v so seems fine.

engine could turn over easily in 6th

Checked the main fuse - connections a tiny bit dirty but still shiney metal and fuse was good.

Then started it up again and it went...

we'll see how this panns out

To check the battery properly: Charge until fully charged (12.5 - 12.8v) - Turn on lights to load bettery for 10 - 15 secs. - Turn lights off. - Connect a voltmeter to the battery and crank the starter. - The voltage should not drop any lower than 9v. Also check voltage again after an houror so to make sure its holding charge properly.

Also Batteries dont like working in the cold. So if your batteries a bit stuffed, and one morning its a bit colder than normal, it might not quite have the guts needed.
