View Full Version : The jump to a big bike?

ok. so theres four hundred and ninty four thousand (roughly) threads on jumping up to bigger bikes. Well fuck it im not gonna ask and ive just gone and done it. Now lets see who is right. nay sayers who say 1000cc bikes are death traps or that we all secretly have the skills of rossi, mccoy and stoner blended together. Hopefully i can figure out a poll to predict my fate.

Ive gone and got me a nice 954 to replace the old vfr400. Am i going to die??? lets find out.

feel free to take a guess.

Backround:

Ive ridden for about over 3 years now. had a vt250 for a bit that a mate wrote off and then got a vfr400 nc21. Had that for a couple of years. learnt that a 400 v4 goes faster than a v twin early on. but i survived. Never pulled over. crashed on the road twice (doing silly things, not dumb things).

Raced a 400 this year (nc30/35 bitsa thingy).

Im young(ish), would classify myself as a bit of an idiot, and have a history of crashing on first encounters (first road race, first street race).

Personally i think a 1000 (well its pretty close) is stupid for the road. Its far to grunty to use and is just gonna chew through money and prob. license points. but i tested one the other day and it was the most fun ive had in a very long time. plus you cant have a 600 cause they are ugly till the newer ones and i have a hatred for 650's (im a 400 f3 rider, what do you expect). but might as well own one for a bit before getting something gorgious (SP2, uuuhhhhhhhhh)

Off for a trackday sat. at ruapuna and then ride back to dunedin (maybe depending on death occuring or not) hopefully to return to work (again depending on death).

Ill report my findings at the end of the weekend... maybe

haha yea. tried that on a 400 from the push bike like vt. fortunatly the stars aligned that day such that i know accelleration and decelleration are not equally improved as motor sized increases. hopefully i remember that. proabbly not

A bike will only go as fast as you twist the throtle.

A mate of mine went from his first bike (VFR400) to a K3 GSX-R thou.
No problems. Enjoy the new bike.

Went from a 400 to a c1 zx 900 had no real issues. A bit of respect of what I had under me and what it could do helped

So tell me, who are buying the 1000cc+ bikes if the sensible chapter tells all that they are not ready for them?

It's not the big mf motor under the man, it is the man above the big mf motor.

Same here, went straight to a 1200 so have no bench mark comparision, Do I respect it YES does it Frighten me NO.....It an older biker which is more forgiving and also its more a tourer than sports....each to their own.

Really the answer to your questions lies in the answer:

How hard do you want to twist the throttle ???

Norfland HARD :headbang::headbang:

haha as some people will tell you i beleive that all control devices in cars and bikes come in one of two posititons. mwahhh hahaha.

just down in the garage prepping other bikes and im really amped for the weekend.

picked up my cbr from a really good guy in chch for a 8.5. seems like a steal when a mid 90's zxr750 is 5 or 6. no major wear or tear and runs nice with a few goodies. well no major wear and tear yet.

how hard do i want to twist the throttle?to the stops and leave it there. but im not an idiot. ill take it to a comfy position. then add a little. heheheh.:laugh::laugh::stupid:

Viffer 400 to a thou not a big deal - all the other threads are "I'm moving from a GN250 to a GSXR1000 K7 coz I got me my restricted and summ mad skillz yo!"

Which is usually why the nay sayers turn around and call the poster "tit".

Have fun, enjoy your bike and learn about traction budget.

mate, its just like riding a bike.
its no jump, its just what you do.
get on a grunty bitch and rape the fuck out of it! ride it like you stole it!

just remember they take some stopping, and get up to high speed fast.

8.5 is a good deal. but will have to wait a while me thinks. have just finished at uni recently and dont think the significant other will appreciated money being spent on a new bike as already have a couple in the garage. :woohoo:
have you ridden her yet? how she handle?

Ask Dover he went from a Small bike to 3 x 1000cc bikes and brought two of them back to the shop that he brought them from in Boxs.....

nah hoping up to pickit up tomorrow. but had a quick spin. didn't really ride it much. just made it move in straight lines.

ive just finshed uni too. get a personal loan on a grad package. cheap as chips and fuck all interest. its more important to be out there riding than wishing to be out there riding.

oh right your not in chch i see. did you just find it over the net. i am a bit dubious of the whole purchasing over the net things at times. especially when the thing is in a different city to me and i cant get to check it out.
personal loan the way to go you rec. i take it thats what you have done?
good on you mate. and you are right it is better to be out there riding that wishing you were.
are you having it as a road bike or race bike?:scooter:

I went from 250 to 1200 and it hasn't been an issue.

I wouldn't call myself a mature rider either. Right hand control is the key, and the spidey sense to anticipate things.

When we get new toys, we all have the urge to push them (or more likely ourselves) to see what they are capable of.

Just resist that urge for a while... until you get familiar with the bike, then slowly increase corner speeds, lean angles, braking time etc... allowing plenty of reserve when you start out riding it.

yea ive bought heaps on the net site unseen. i judge a bike off the guy im buying it off usually. if there honest about the thing and can tell you whats actually been done to it i feel pretty safe. every now and then you get onewith something wrong but its usually luck more than a toughy. but i saw the bike last weekend cause it is alot more money than i have previously spent.

its gonna be a road bike but it may end up with a spare set of firbeglass fairings and being a wee clubbie trackday bike too. shall see

good on ya mate.:woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo: well by the sounds of it you must have been very keen on the thing if you travelled to adn from dunners just to see the thing.
my partner has just seen this thread and is saying no way to me getting one. getting that look at the mo. haha. :bash::bash:
thinking you havent got a g/f to worry about at the mo, and to say no way on the purchase. lol
lucky for some.

well for those that care i have survived. i am still alive. dissappointing i know. i was gutted to have to get up this morning for work.

big bikes are really hard work round a track but awesomly fun. ive never been to the track and not been taken down the straight. it was stupidly fun going past bikes at stupid speeds. braking at the first corner is iffy though. but i think its me and shifting a bit early and boucing the back end. its strange not making full throttle in many places too. but its good. and snaking the rear out of corners is soo easy and controllable. its no gary mccoy - ness but its good fun and feels cool. but proabbly somewhat slow.

on the road its great for overtaking. pace comes on soo fast. its pretty uncomfy but nothing a strong dose of harden the fuck up don't fix. and i think all 100hp+ bikes should come with radar detectors stock. cause they just can't (CAN'T) go slow. handles great but it feels kinda unsettled on big bumps. but thats probably what suspension feels like.

anyway ive proved 35 odd % wrong. soo far. but give me a few more months guys.

see ya fellers about

haha not planning on taking it out for a race yet. a bit undecided as to whether i will. might wait to pick up the cash reserves before hand. or till i drop it on the road. dont wanna go trash out a couple of grand of fairings and other crap just yet. but ask me again in the near future and ill prob change me mind
