If you mean while its on the deck ?

That would be the system that helps it reach take off speed in a short distance (can't remember what its called), but it is operated by steam..

Yeah I know about the steam catapault but if you check the rear there seems to be some vapour being ejected at high pressure at short intervals even after it's left the deck. I doubt they plumb any of the cat. steam into the aircraft.

They still are, if they werent so expensive to run and maintain they'd still be flying. I think the RNZAF pilots were the only ones in the world to do aerobatics while hooked up on the refuelling drogue - something pretty special when you think about it.

I just got awarded a letter of commendation form the CO of 122 by my CO and XO here at 14, on the boat... I have never gotten a REAL award before... I was fighting a smile then I was freaked out because of what it said... I didn't realize how much I had been a part of in 122...
To quote CDR (that means Commander) G. N. Harris

COMMANDING OFFICER STRIKER FIGHTER SQUADRON ONE TWO TWO
TAKES PLEASURE IN COMMENDING
AVIATION STRUCTURAL MECHANIC THIRD CLASS
LYNDA FLEENOR
UNITED STATES NAVY
for services set forth in the following
citation:

For outstanding performance as Plane Captain and Airframes Technician at Strike Fighter Squadron 122 from November 2006 to October 2008. Petty Officer Fleenor performed her duties in an exemplary and highly professional manner while earning command wide respect. As a Plane Captain, her effectiveness as and instructor resulted in a 25 percent increase in qualified plane captains enabling the command to meet critical training requirements. She was integral in the production efforts of the airframes work center, expertly assisting in the completion of 1,243 discrepancies and decreasing work center backlog by 41 percent. Her efforts for the command have proven invaluable in maintaining full mission capable aircraft and allowing the squadron to qualify 103 fleet replacement aircrew who now fight on the front lines of the global war on terrorism. Petty Officer Flexor's professionalism and devotion to duty reflected credit upon herself, contributed significantly to the mission of Strike Fighter Squadron 122, and were in keeping with the highest traditions on the United States Naval Service.
Signed
G. N. HARRIS
Commander, United States Navy

Just so you know, aircrew usually means pilot... Discrepancies are Maintenance actions needing to be done on the aircraft... and that reason they repeat Strike Fighter Squadron 122 is because that says what our mission is and what type of jet we fly, generally.

Anyways, it's chow time.

Love you
Lynda

Well from what I learned in physics at uni is, that its a cloud of water vapour that just condensed out of rapidly expanding air in the rarefied region behind the wall of compressed air.. So basically its just the water in the air turning into water vapour.

OK. The schematic that I have, shows that half way up the tailfin there is the RWR (Rear Warning Receiver) unit. It hasn't been placed at the top of the fin as there is a major hinge-fold system that folds the top half of the tailfin!
On the underside of the RWR there is the fuel vent pipe!!!
Taaa daaahhhh!! An answer!

Nerd info: RA-5C Vigi. Length:23.35m Span:16.17m Height: 5.91m. Max speed: MACH 2.1.

I don't thnk a particular person or organisation can be attributed to inventing the saying of "Speed is life".
Last clue: It came about because of Soviet made, ground-launched anti aircraft missiles...

Ok I can accept that, it seems highly illogical captain to vent fuel at take off and whilst still on deck:scratch:

Last clue: It came about because of Soviet made, ground-launched anti aircraft missiles...

Well it has to be the Israelis then, they'd have the most experience outside of the US at dealing with Soviet SAM's, A-4s with extended tailpipes (the story of one landing with an unexploded SA-7 in the tail pipe is impressive) and the most developed 'Wild Weasel' F-4s, there can be no other!

errr...that's what I said about fuel vent also. Maybe the RA-5 was over takeoff weight.

i.e. SAM2's. Got to be RAF or USAF (or CIA) if it was to do with Cold War or Israeli's like Sully said.

Correct!! Bling on the way.
Israeli fighter pilots coined the phrase and the Americans liked it as well. After the trouble the Syrian's caused and the Bekkaa Valley affairs, all quite sensible really.

The F-14 proved the worth of ample speed, when operating over the Eastern end of the Med. and conflicts therewith. Missiles launched at a speeding Tomkitty could not catch up!:first:
