Hi, Need to do my 1st wof and not sure where to go? I'm on the shore in Torbay and I know there's Action Wreckers in Barrys Pt Rd, but is there anywhere else?
How particular are they? What are the definite 'fail' type stuff, would it be similar to a car? (ie liscense plate lights, etc)
Help???

You could take it there, or to one of the general testing stations like VINZ, or if you can get into town, take it to Kerry @ Motohaus.
Depends where you go how thoroughly it's checked, and what they deem to be important, which is why I don't go to VINZ any more for my bike, because I know it's fine, but don't want it to get picked up for something stupid, like the fact it has a sticker on the frame saying the muffler complies with some standard or other, but the muffler on the bike isn't the one referred to on the sticker.
Reminds me - I should remove that sticker.

There's an On Road on Poland road out the back of Glen Field. I've taken my bike there a few times before..
Most On Roads and VTNZ stations will do yer WOF while yer wait..

No, but it's not out of the question, given some of the morons I've dealt with in the past.
Had the Pajero fail before we sold it, because one of the tags on the (obviously) factory fitted seatbelts had come off.
Had it fail another time because I took the fuse out of the driving lights, because on a previous occasion they'd changed the regulations, and the tester told me to just pull the fuse out.
My bikes have almost always sailed through, but one time I had to have the steering head bearings replaced before the next test, and last time I took the VTR in the front brake pads were toast, but I got a sticker on the basis that they still worked OK, and I'd ordered new ones for it.

My CBR250 failed on it's 'floating discs'.. The tester didn't like the movement in the discs and calipers and told me they were dangerous. I didn't think they were, since it stopped on a 5¢ every time, but got them checked all the same. Got the ok from 2 bike shops, so went back. Still a nope.. and it's on record, so I couldn't go elsewhere to get it done. So had to spend $400 on another pair of discs, and sorting out the calipers. Went back a third time to show the guy, and he wasn't there!! Another guy came to look at it, so I explained the story, he then said
'Oh, he doesn't know what he's on about there.. that's not a fail at all...' :angry2:
"So can I have my $400+ you lot made me spend?"
"Nah, sorry.. if you got money off us, everyone would be at it.. not worth even asking..."

Bloody hell! I bet you were blowing steam out your ears on that one!:angry2:
I bet he would've freaked out at the brakes on the VifFerraRi then, with their peculiar sliding hingey thingo (tech term) left caliper bracket doofer (another tech term).

I would lay a complaint with the LTSA enforcement people. Get his ticket pulled...
The testing station people seem to be particuarly moronic, especially the ones in West Auckland (Moselle Ave, Henderson). Had a couple of fails there, that had nothing wrong with them.
I would also have waited for a month (unless you needed the bike for daily transport), until after the recheck period, and gone elsewhere for another WOF. ALthough it is on recodrd, if it is actually OK, no probs - you fixed it in the month

You can go anywhere else and get a WoF,just because you failed somewhere, doesn't mean you can't go somewhere else and get a pass - you just have to pay again....still cheaper than new discs though eh?

Nah, the guy there is pretty good.
One just needs the magic little warrant sticker, after all. Who cares where it comes from.

mate i have found its a bit like a lucky dip at the testing station with bikes, i have been failed on having chain lube around my wheel, but i have also been passed on a pretty much bald rear tyre, i just told the guy "of course it only has tread on the outside 20mm, this brand of tyre only has tread on the outer edges for cornering", and that was good enough for him to write out the little sticker.

Actually, thanks for reminding me, mine is due this month too.
I was planning on taking it to the VTNZ in Kingsland. anyone had any experiences with them?
Im sure It would be fine Ive just had it serviced at Colemans, although they did mention I would need new chain and sprokets soon. could I fail on that?
Cheers

Don't blame the poor inspector, although most, myself included are wankers. The seatbelt tag rule came about because in the early days of Jap imports the dealers were cutting the tags because the tag had year of manufacter and they were falcifying the year (the HT leads are also dated, but they didn't find out about that) the tag also had standards marking and they were needed - but hey,you don't need a seatbelt tag now! The lighting rule has changed so many times it's not funny - and on monday there is a notice on the WoF online saying new lighting rules came into effect on the 27th feb and we will recieve an updated VIRM on 1st march (not yet!) but we are to carry on with the old regs until 1st april, the oline VIRM has disapeared,or atleast the website has changed,it's now LTNZ and totaly different.Any wonder no one quite knows what's what.
I used to go to the testing station in Kingsland cause no one knew how to ride bikes there, so I would always pass my WOF.. Heh

Hmm... after all your advices I decided to give Action Wreckers on Barrys Pt Rd a shot. The owner does the inspection and he's pretty cool! Being 'independent' and not of the test center variety, he was pretty upfront abt what is really important and what can be 'signed' off.
If any of you guys live up around the shore I do recommend them!! :niceone:
Thanks guys for the help, much appreciated! :done:

It was just the lack of commonsense that got me - the seatblet in question was very obviously (a) factory-fitted, and (b) the same as all the others apart from the driver's one, so it was stupid to make an issue of it. Another tester who wasn't a dickhead like him would've ignored it. As for the driver's seatbelt - that was even dumber. It had a bit that was fraying, so every 6 months when the warrant was due, I'd cut the frayed bits off, and/or melt the fuzzy bit with a soldering iron. It was very obvious it was damaged, but it passed like that for at least 18 months, even though they were supposed to be failing even faded seatbelts. In the end, I thought, "This is stupid!" and replaced it.

They need to shoot the bureacrats that mess with the rules all the time. They should be based on safety and commonsense, not changed on a whim every few months. They should also be measurable, not open to interpretation. Then the tester's job would be easier, and people wouldn't get pissed off about arbitrary failures.

On the practical exam they make us look at the complete belt, the standard markings (what do those numbers mean? um,ah,duh!),the mountings...ALL the mountings, even under the seat,we have to pull out the webbing and inspect every inch,on every belt - you want a complete test one day and see how many ''petty'' things you get pulled up on? Some guys have different things they put in the ''gloss over'' basket...a full test is not really possible, and if any station did one you'd be damn sure no one would go back there..like $120 for a WoF and it failed on 40 items?
The main reason for the changing rules is that NZ is trying to move to a sort of hybedised Aust/Euro standards system, but the bulk of our cars are Jap imports.A Japanese car sold on the world market will pass all these regulations...but Japanese domestic vehicles don't meet overseas regs, just their own stuff,so um...''we better change this rule eh,cause my son in law has imported a shit load of these Toyotas and he can't get them VINed,we should be able to get a nice new Corolla for your daughter too,how bout it eh?''
