View Full Version : How do I know if I need stitches?

Sorry this is completely off topic but I figured if there's any group who'd have experience with stitches it'd be bikers. I cut my hand about 5-10mm deep and about 2-3cm across. So I cleaned in out and tried to bite the flappy bit of flesh off. I got concerned when I gave it a decent bite and it was too thick to bite off. So bandaged it twice with plasters and it bled through both the plasters. Now I got cloth wrapped around it. Should I bother going to a GP over something so small, or is there a chance it will get infected? Its been bleeding now for about an hour (I took off the cloth to see if it was still wet). My main concern however is fitting my hands into my gloves!!!!!

If it's not closing up, and it's still bleeding, I'd say stitches were advised.

Get it checked out. If it hasnt stopped bleeding yet you probably will be needing help with it.

Post up pics of it before and after you go to the gp though.

Yeah I'd get it looked at. Especially if using your hand (either clenching a fist, or opening it out) makes the wound "open up". I figure it'll need some help staying closed to heal...

I'd raise the issue of infection as well...

where on the hand is the cut???

michael
2nd March 2009, 14:30
Dont own a camera, and even if I did I cant be arsed. Its just alot of blood. I've cut myself heaps before even shoved a nail through my foot (literally). This was a bit different though, took 2-3 sec to start bleeding but by the time I got to a tap both hands were covered in blood.

cameras are our friend.... pics tell a thousand words... we all love pics :doctor:

I'd go get it checked out... may need stitches and emobilising the thumb for it to heal....

It would be covered under ACC...minimal or no charge... if you don't get it sorted and something develops from it later you WILL NOT be covered

Pretty much they wouldn't normally stich there anyway ... as it would pull etc .. but you may need steri strips. I would recommend getting it seen, sooner than later .. but if you aren't worried about infection and loosing use then don't worry.

Ok first thing tomorrow I'll go see a nurse at uni, because its free. Not looking forward to that disinfectant spray they use (stings like a bitch). Anyway better safe than sorry, I've had an infection in my blood before. I think thats what it's called anyway, my veins all went a funny colour and they said if I left it any longer it could have resulted in amputation HAHAHA. All from not getting a cut looked after before, you would have thought I'd learn from my mistakes.

Yeah, I caught that on the idiot box. If that were my daughter I'd be hatching a plan that didn't include a bunch of fuckwit lawyers and a fat-arsed judge sitting in a court room. While we don't know what the girl said, if a cop can't take an earbashing from a teenager he's in the wrong job. I saw also that she flicked her shoes at him (probably after being ordered to remove them) but they don't look like heavyweight steel caps to me. The cop's a twat, string him up. Next case please.

superglue it together.
That's actually not a bad idea.
From what I heard, superglue was originally developed for surgical purposes.
And - like most glues or sticky substances - it sticks better to skin than just about anything else.

GoatFood Says:
i uste to use big ants and bite ther heads of wen thy bite the skin but there are no ents here. So put thorns threw the bits of skin to. Make a poltis of gote poo and mud and putit on yor hand and rap it in leevs. Look at it agen in the mornig.

If it all turns pear-shaped, I've heard they can do marvellous things with big toes these days. And it doesn't even take too long to learn how to walk again.

Why did you try to bite the flappy bit of skin off? Auto-cannabilism, or some such weird thing?
That is truly gross. Human bites are notorious for infection...if you didn't need medical attention before, you do now. Get to the doctor and stop trying to be such a hard man!

Personally, I'd just HTFU.

I cut my arm off once. I finished the working day then went home for a wee lie down.

Pffft, that's nothing. Back in the 80's, I fell into a grinder and had both arms and both legs shredded off. This happened in a salt mine and the 5k walk home was on a gravel road. I made it home only to be attacked by the neighbours pit bull and I somehow avoided death by throwing both of us in front of a moving truck.

I returned to work the next day with 3 stitches on my lips caused by me trying to open a beer can with my mouth.

Have you had that hand fixed up yet, michael?

YellowDog
3rd March 2009, 15:31
ForFucksSake Michael, of course you do need stiches.

But this advice is only if you actually do want to stop the bleeding and avoid infection followed by possible amputation.

If you are not sure phone Healthline 0800611116, but you must already know what the answer will be.

Just in case, would you like to have a Biker Proceesion following your coffin?

Good luck.
