View Full Version : Easter weekend Kaitoke is go!

Okay,...have decided to go for it !!

Have approached a particular Wellington motorcycle shop that supports buckets (and may have the odd Guzzi or 2....). They MAY be willing to donate a prize or 3 (I promise I will get my V11 serviced there forever, guys).
I'm also going to approach other bike shops and outfits to see what I can get them to donate etc.

What I'm wanting to do is a prize system not just for 1, 2 ,3 like you'd expect, but more like most improved, longest distance travelled, biggest effort, most flashest looking (by a public poll at the track, yes you can nominate Lady P ;) ), most creative etc so it makes it more fun. FUN is what it is about.
Be looking at doing an A, B & C class and maybe Minimotos.
Also thinking of doing a Top North vs Mid North vs South race where a gun rider from each area do a 5 lap race against each other. Make for excellent viewing I reckon.

I haven't finalised an entry fee yet but it will be most likely around the $40-45 figure. This will have to be payable in advance as the track fee for the day is not cheap for a big event like this. Once sorted, shall get the details up ASAP.

Also, shall I just do Sunday or Sat and Sunday as it will be double the price to race both days obviously, ie $90 for both etc.
My opinion is just the Sunday to allow out of towners to get there, stay over and get to the track the next day.

Now, feedback, people?
Bear in mind this is just my ideas and if any of you have any wickedly cool ideas then please feel free to share.

Cheers,
Nudey.

PS I want to see more Southies and out of Welly riders say they're attending !!! :)

Do you know if Bayden has looked into whether we can do an afternoon/day at the Slipway on either the Saturday or Sunday? That way we could do two days and show the out-of-towners both of Wellington's tracks.

To answer your answers Nudey, two days please. Make it worth the out of towners while to travel. They've got Friday to get here and Monday to get home.

As a general comment: All right! Woohoo!

This will be a great weekend.

I think two days is the way to go if it can be arranged.

If we can't get the Slipway, then Saturday one direction and Sunday the other direction at Kaitoke - pretty different each day then.

Both tracks would be very cool. Will there be a prizes for the best bucket meltdown and the best lasting buckets as well? And will kids (as in not teenagers) have to pay? I have at least one child that will declare she is dying if she isn't given a chance to get out there.

That would be the C class, as with all classes I imagine numbers will determine amount of time on the track.

I was all ready to ride the bucket on the ferry and get one of the NWM crew to pick me up. Still I get the two weekends before racing so I carn't complain.

Good luck with the meeting and more warning next time please.:niceone:

Yeah, we can do the volunteer thing or the A riders do the B riders flagging and vice versa etc as long as we allow enough time for them to get back to jump on the bike.

I'm not going to be riding much by the looks due to organising etc so anyone who may not have their bike running but wants a blat should bring their leathers out :)

The other thing too is I'm leaning heavily towards just making it Sunday due to the sheer logistics of running a 2-day event.

The track is absolutely brilliant :)
Times? errr can't say I've done lap-scoring but may do in future.
Speeds? guessing prob around 90-100km/h. Definitely faster than Slipway.
Lots of places to pass as the track is very wide. Quite technical too.
It is awesome when you flat out in top through a corner with your knee on the deck, adrenaline stuff !!

Do a search here and look for some of Fishie's and Richban's vids of racecam footage at Kaitoke to get a good idea.

Basically, anything that touches the ground or has the potential to has to be nyloned. Of course, clutch and front brake levers are okay as long as they are balled.
Critical areas are footpegs and handlebar ends.
Safety wire the sump plug (or drain plug for you 2-stroke riders), filler plug, front and rear axle (Split pin or R-clips are okay).

Hey nudey, put me down for a bit of that nylon - handlebars, pegs, front + rear axels all good, but afraid my exhaust might touch down.

Now, how to mount it? Was thinking something like this? Any suggestions.

The alternative is to extend the crash bung/bobbin I've got below it so it extends beyond the exhaust pipe - but that's a bit far...

nudemetalz
9th March 2009, 11:54
Looks like it could work, just make sure none of the mounting bolts stick out as far as the nylon.
Go to Grayley Plastics in Lower hutt for the nylon. Not cheap but well worth it.

Mint.
Just make sure you put recesses in the nylon so the clips dont stick out over it, a bit of time with a file should sort that.

Hasn't on mine yet but it is spaced off the exhaust.
I would think it might get a bit soft but is unlikley to melt.

Here is a quick pic of how I have done it.
Nylon block in blue.
I used pop rivets to hold it on, countersunk to keep them lower than the surface.
the bits of steel between the muffler and nylon were about 10mmwide by 2mm thick, I figure they might bend a bit and absorb impact but saty on.
It is yet to be tested.

Also, I have a 13 year old brother who would love the chance to have a go at the Kaitoke track in grade C. He is a very slow rider. He has a heart problem that holds him back from high exertion sports (gets breathless easily) but is damn good at riding his mountain bike.
If there is a chance he could have a crack at riding a bike on the track, that would really be something cool for him! I understand though if numbers are not great enough for a C grade.

See y'all there

Would it be possible for the lunch break be used as a regular slot for kids, to get out there? My daughter was over the moon she got to out, even though it was around a tiny part of the circuit.

This could be more appropriate at Slipway, no chance of lookin dangerous to the Karters.Good idea, any other comments, ideas to get learners and kids out there and interested.

you mean my little gate-helper? ;)
She was very enthusiastic the whole day. I see a potential MotoGP rider in the making......!!!

Yes I agree, Slipway would be better for this.
I was rather nervous about the whole proceedings at Kaitoke last Sunday. Main thing was the factors, ie wet weather, no flaggies & and Kart staff watching us....

We did talk about a potential C class last night. See how the entries go first and decide on the day.

You ran a great day and much thanks for putting up with my daughter. Yes she is very keen, just needs that little bit more confidence to really get going. My other daughter wants to come up on the 11th to Slipway. So maybe a under 12 year old class (on Chinese mini dirt bikes)?

Cool! My brother will come up to the Slipway then! He drives go karts a lot at Daytona raceway and really enjoys that. But after watching the buckets the other day, he decided 2 wheels are better than 4 (he is definately my brother)!

He wont be able to race as such, just putt around the track. So will he have to pay much? I will bring some cash for him anyway.

Cheers

Damn you are generous about lending out your bikes aren't you man!! Sweet I might have to take you up on that deal! But Dad and I will try and get him started on the FXR in a car park with nylons etc. My new FXR is taking shape!!

Btw, I have a mate who wants to start bucketing. He has an RGV150 which he uses as a commuter. If he carbed this down, would it be ok (not against the rules) to take bucketing? I am hoping this will be ok because a full engine replacement might be a mission. Otherwise we will try get our hands on a TS125.

OK, so we have thought that by the time we get home from Buckets and people get their shit together and get here also, it could be getting late and possibly cold, and considering it's Easter Sunday and all the supermarkets and anywhere you can buy booze will be shut, we are thinking it might just be easier if whoever wants to come round after buckets to our place is welcome to do so, we'll order some pizzas (you'll still need to bring your own booze though) and sit about and talk shit etc.
I can also imagine there will be some tired and possibly sore bods about, so probably won't be a late one either.
So is anyone actually keen for this?
I'm not sure if they'll be allowed to open the bar at the track on Sunday and not sure how they'd feel about us all sitting about in our vans in the pits drinking beer, so may be the only opportunity to sit about, have a few beers and laugh about all the stupid shit people did over the last two days ...

Yup - up to the wind turbine and go through the gate at the end of the carpark. It should have small signs pointing the way to the 'Slipway Driving Facility'.

Um, can we ensure the gate is OPEN and UNLOCKED... I remember at least once I had to turn around and go home because the gate was locked.

Hey guys, have an awesome day racing tomorrow (Saturday) - we've made the decision to open the shop for the day as usual.

If anyone's at a loose end Saturday and in town, come see us @ the shop: Scooterazzi, cnr Ghuznee & Victoria Streets, 10am -> 3pm.

If it's REALLY quiet we'll kick the strays out, shut the doors and come on up to watch.

BUT... us lads from Scooterazzi will see ya all on the track on Saturday. Looks like 3 of us are riding and we promise NO team tactics... unless of course anyone can help me make sure Mark stays behind me. Oh, wait... he's supposed to be on my team, scratch that... :)

Have fun tomorrow guys and gals!

Smack talk?

Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose a three-piece suite on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pissing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourselves. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?

What the fuck are these?

Opium suppositories. Ideal for your purposes. Slow release. Bring you down gradual. Custom fucking designed for your needs.

I want a fucking hit!

That's all I've got, matey, take it or leave it.

That was an bloody awesome weekend, loved every minute of it.

Fix your bike and get back on the track. Once the day is started and people know the order of the ride sessions and where to go to flag marshal, these days can pretty much run themselves as I have seen in the past at the Slipway with Bayden.

wanizami is in for a new rear end and more sliders, Ikasu's for more work on her exhaust and a rear slick (thank you Fish) and my people moving piece of &^&% s off to the auto-sparky as it's more difficult to fix than my meagre skills.

Have fun next weekend. I'm moving house the previous day and my wife will roast my privates on Ikasu's exhaust if I even mention the idea of racing on that day.

Many thanks to Sully for taking the time to ride my bike and give me some pointers on improving its handling. Its difficult to keep it tight in the corners. I will follow his suggestions for Mt Wellington next weekend. Awesome day, awesome people, awesome track, Chris, very many thanks for organising such a great day.
