View Full Version : A ride on my mate's Harley

Went out for a meal with my mate and our partners at the Speights Ale House last nite. As we talked about bikes in general, I said to my mate that I recently took a 1995 Yamaha 850 twin for a test ride. Was blown away by the sound of a twin and the torque was something else !!! My mate said why dont you take my 2004 Harley for a spin next Sunday?.........I was like :gob:...Fuck yeah!!!!...He said after you been a on a Harley, you wont want go back on a Sportsbike.....Hhhhmmmm we will see so anyone else have a similar experience? By the way I own a 1991 Yamaha 400 Diversion which is just a commuter bike so this will be a big step up for me:Punk:

Yep. Dare to live the dream.....
I've ridden a Harley that I wouldn't buy, but I've never ridden one I didn't like. It depends what you want the bike for, at the end of the day.
Hang on, Skidmark will be here soon to tell us that it will break down and blah blah blah.

Mum and dad are both harley fanatics, have had them around me my whole life. I remember one of dads bikes he managed to pick up extremely cheap because some idiot put this tiny little part in the wrong way round so the bike never run as it should. Being mechanically minded it never took him long to figure out what was actually wrong and he ended up with yet another bike that he loved.
Mum even has a sign for the garage "harley parking only all other bikes will be crushed." She hasn't had mine crushed yet  Though she took my bike for a ride and absolutely hated the position she was forced into to actually be able to ride it.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with them. At the end of the day its all down to personal preference. What one person likes, someone else will hate. Its just how it is. Let us know how the ride goes. And who knows you might just be pleasantly suprised!

Cool - you'll enjoy it.
Just don't expect too much, then you'll enjoy it even more.
They are what they are, and they are the complete opposite spectrum of the biking world to a sportbike so his comment is really a load of shit.
If you want to get a real debate going with him - take a Suzuki, Kawa, etc cruiser of the same capacity out and compare that to his Harley :girlfight:

I love Harleys, but doubt I would every buy one. You will love the obvious build quality and beautiful sound, but like any bike you get used to them quite quickly and then look for something better. I still find cruisers awkward.

The exhaust tone never gets old, And quality is there for the life of the bike, So I can't agree with those points.

Expect greatness.
Just don't expect a sports bike.
Good idea about the other cruisers, None of them close to capturing what they are trying so hard to imitate so the HD will shine.

He said after you been a on a Harley, you wont want go back on a Sportsbike.....
There goes another Tui ad right their!
After being on a hardley you won't want to get back on a sports bike, yeah right!
Seriously it all depends on what type of rideing you are use too, are comfortable with and what you like.
I much prefer something that can handle, has some degree of stopping power, doesn't weight as much as the country of origins dept and lastly has a lot more to give than just an image.

I've had a good number of Harleys and just this week picked up a new 96" Dyna. The motor's a f'kin' gem and I love it but, just the same, wouldn't part with my Guzzi.
Harleys divide opinion but I think that's more because of the naff, corny marketing and some of the wankers that are drawn to it than the bikes themselves. If a Harley's for you, enjoy it for what it is, not what you think it 'means'. If not, ride something else.

Hahaharleys engines make great use for industrial stationary powerplants.
Sludge pumps and alike. Even concrete mixers, only to be rivaled by Briggs and Stratton.
I heard they run on Kerosene, is this true?

Theres endless video of guys riding cruisers Harley or otherwise faster than many on supposed sportbikes on roads they supposedly cant be fast on,i dont give a fuck what make of bike it is theres not much point in trashing it on the interweb, maybe Harley/cruiser knockers should instead of slagging such bikes simply post "i dont have the ability to ride one quick".

A Harley rider said something very similar to me last weekend.
My reply was to the effect that you should be able to ride a Harley on a car licence. The performance of a Harley being comparable to that of a moped.

Was ready to rock and roll this morning at 10am, my first impression was it was comfortable to sit on, just sitting there idling with the beast saying, come on dude lets roll on. So away we went... the roar of the big twin, left me with grin a wide as a cheshire cat and was amazed how controlable the Harley was around corners, all being cautious of course. The power is something else though, not as quick off the mark but the torque on the open road was like having a rocket booster attached to the back end!:2thumbsup.
It was an awesome experience and people who are lucky enough to own a Harley have my full respect and admiration. But would I buy one? IMHO...yes... if i can afford one, so for the time being will stick with my Sportsbike and keep pootling along my merry way....hmmm that Harley grunt will haunt me with pleasure!!!;)

Well the riding position was very comfortable for starters, with wide bars and feet position forward. Funny thing though was that when I came to a stop at an intersection, I proceded to take off again and being used to a sportsbike position, I was thinking where the bloody hell are the footpegs:doh:.....alas me thinks you silly fool..... put feet forward:slap:

Refreshing lack of prejudice amongst the non-Harley owners in this thread. However, as usual, mention Harleys amongst any group of bikers and some cock will dazzle you with his originality by regurgitating a tired old line about ‘agricultural’ bikes with ‘shit brakes’ that are ‘unreliable’ and over-priced. If the brand’s not for you I really couldn’t give a shit but at least have the grace to keep your witless ignorance to yourself.
I’ve done tens of thousands of miles on Harleys without a problem and am just running-in my latest one (the new 96” Dyna Fat Bob). Already it’s apparent that the motor is a f’kin’ gem, the finish is flawless, and, since they hold their value better than anything else, it’s money well spent.
This is my biking history so it’s not like I’m anti-Japanese or Italian bikes (still have and love my Guzzi). If you’re lucky enough to experience a new Harley any time soon you might just have to question a few long-held, ill-informed or inherited prejudices and actually conjure up an original thought based on experience. God forbid.

Well said Molly. However it doesn't necessarily have to be a new harley though! Dads harley was made in 1942 and he loved that thing to bits. He definately got more joy out of it than his newer harley. Sadly some people just don't get it, but at the end of the day they are the ones who are missing out. The main thing is that people have fun (this part seems to be forgotten during the "that bikes a piece of crap" arguement) wether they are riding a GN250, RG150, a harley or an R1. Theres something available for everyone.

Yep it would be a boring world if all the bikes were made the same.
Regardless of what anyone thinks of HD they have been around over 100 years and you only need to go to a rally in NZ to see how popular they are. They are doing something right!
Its a dam shame that Suzuki and Honda are dropping their (non cruiser) V-Twins.
Its a dam shame that one of Suzuki, Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha don't produce a kick arse IL4 drag styled cruiser (OK Yam have the V-Max thing).
Honda seriously missed the boat not cashing in on a V5 (Yamaha are cashing in on the crank thingy).
BMW should build the Lo-Rider.

Hey no problem thats why I always have an open mind about all makes of bikes, never one to take myself too seriously, even if its at my own expense lol. Your dads bike sounds real cool, has he let his favourite daughter have we pootle?:innocent:
My RG is fun, people laugh at me when I say it lol.. Then again minimotos are fun too.
Dads been gone for just over 4 years now, so sadly both his harleys are tucked away in the garage. When mum is ready to ride again herself she'll get them out (shes not ready to ride them or sell either of them yet. That said she would never sell the old girl). I highly doubt I'd be allowed to ride one though lol, no matter how much I begged ;)

Bottom line is its real easy to diss anything on the internet, not like any cunt has to man up eh,theres a bloke up in CH-CH that ive ridden with many times who rides a GS beemer:laugh: yep one of them, thing is ive seen this guy outride pretty much everyone on anything down roads that the interweb heroes would say "fuck off not possible" on,fact is the guy has ability..simple really, theres a whole lot more to ability than the name on the tank:doh:not something i would imagine many on here could begin to comprehend and no doubt never will.Theres far more important things to worry about to todays motorcyclist like "some fucker didnt wave back" or my favourite "how does the public view motorcyclists".
i would guess a great rider on a bad bike, will always beat a bad rider on a great bike,as the great rider will get home safely

So sorry to read of your loss but am sure that one day you will get the opportunity to ride a Harley. And that said if and when you do, just remember where the footpegs are situated:eek: By the way nothing wrong with an RG cos I almost bought one myself. :msn-wink:

And there in lies some peoples ignorance. Just like Japanese bikes not all Harleys are the same....I know shock horror.

However, as usual, mention Harleys amongst any group of bikers and some cock will dazzle you with his originality by regurgitating a tired old line about ‘agricultural’ bikes with ‘shit brakes’ that are ‘unreliable’ and over-priced.
I would never say unreliable.
Neither would I say overpriced. Exchange rates are the issue. When our dollar is doing well the prices aren't too bad at all - especially when one considers what kind of resale one will get a couple of years down the track.
And yeah, maybe the brakes could sometimes be a touch better, but they're good enough. I've pulled up in time before when Jap bikes travelling at the same pace as me have not.
Definately "agricultural" though. That's one of the main things I like about them. Stick your sewing machines up your arse!

not trying to take the piss, was merely saying that being used to sportsbikes over the years and had my very first ride on a harley, surely you would understand that it takes awhile to get your bearings on a new experience. And I dont bite:whistle:

Usually takes me about 100 metres.
I like all bikes. Except ones that break down for no reason.
