I can show you guys the basics, for more bike specific settings you need a manual or to visit a dealer to get hold of the specifications. Basically most 2 strokes are the same and most 4 strokes are the same. Once you have done a bit with one you can cross reference that to others...
No promises though....

Maybe you and me could arrange some workshops on the shore somewhere, go through some of the basics: Top ends, grease and bearing changes, fork oil check and change etc...
Could do with more than one persons opinions (spelling) and I may be able to pick up some more as I'm self taught myself.

could do self taught myself as well just got sick of paying shop mostly after payin for a full rebuild on an old xr200 that blew up 3 weeks later cause they didnt do the bottom end.

Sounds good to me, can work something tadem if wanted to do both bikes in one night... Not so much of doing both at once, but could at least set up one while instructing the other (like doing the water and stripping the tanks etc).
Can't do this Friday though....

Think you will have to get a KX85/KX100 manual as they are a Kawasaki bike that has been rebadge under Suzuki from some deal the 2 companies done.
The bad news is that according to Clymer and Haynes websites they haven't done a manual for them yet (up to 2003 model). You can however get a workshop manual, like what the dealers have. Not that helpfull with step by step, but does have specific specifications in them. Haynes and Clymer don't do a lot of Suzuki (esp RM) manuals for some reason, we had to get a workshop one for my sisters RM80.

After doing some more reading have found out that there is very little difference between the 85 and the 100, so if you cannot get hold of a 100 manual try a 85. Also supposably the only differences from the 03 model to the 07 is the graphics, so you may get away with the haynes or clymer KX100 manuals... Can buy these from manuals.co.nz - http://www.manuals.co.nz/?CLSN_728=1237243932728bd8682806554dc42b8a&keyword=KX100&searchby=title&page=shop%2Fbrowse&fsb=1 or alternatively places like cycletreads can also get them in.
If you want a RM one then you would probably only get a workshop manual, think manuals.co.nz does them as well.

Did you watch top gear with those new electric cars? the Teslar? One gear and it revs to 14,000 RPM and it goes around the top gear track faster than a Porsche GT3. - battery life is a bit of a issue and recharge time is too, but there is rumored to be a huge revolution in battery charging technology that means you could charge something like your cell phone in under 1 minute. I won't go into it cause its far to geeky.
The other electric car was a Hydrogen Fuel cell made by Honda. It has a reasonable power output and pretty good distances it can go. And the price of hydrogen is about the same as petrol. And the only by product of driving - water.

Okey dokey, following the rebuild, new airfilters and a new clutch cable the CR "or should I name her" has a flat spot at high revs, torque down low is good, power comes on much as before but with more of a kick. BUT... 3/4 through power band theres a flat spot for about 1.5 seconds then takes off again it is more noticeable in the high gears.
Would this have to do with the RC valve adjustment...?? or is it a tuning thing now that it has a new piston???

New piston shouldn't really have any effect on tuning at all!
Firstly was the problem there in your first ride (you didn't mention it) or has it developed since.
It could have something to do with the power valve not working properly if that loose bolt is jamming the arm. Your manual said they where a self adjusting servo motor but re read it in case that actuator arm has to be put at a set angle.
Other than that you could strip and clean the carb to make sure no shit got in there when we had it apart it was pretty dirty in that air box and the filter looked like it may have been at the point the foam was maybe breaking down so there might be a bit of that floating around in the carb.
I haven't had anything to do with those RC power valves on the CR my 01 was a manual one so Booom may be able to add something here. Send him a PM and alert him to the thread.
A new piston won't cause a flat spot its either something done during the job or something that's developed since.

for those that may be able to help here goes. the adjuster cable with the threaded end has broken has snapped (wear and tear)... ive put the adjuster nuts back on the remainder of the thread so it all sits tight 1 nut inside and 1 nut outside, i spose this means there is no adjustment available and it may now be tighter than previous. Can anyone tell me if the RC valve is self adjusting, and if I buy a new cable am I "mechanically illiterate" going to be able to adjust to the correct position or is it simply a case of trial and error. chairs..darryl

26th March 2009, 18:29
you can cock up the cable tension on the power valve actuator. Check it. THe cables are only $20 and they are a common item to break on CR's. Its its worn just get a new oene and fit it.

The adjuster nuts will be so you can get the correct tension on the cables so the servo motor works at optimum. But i was expecting the book to be able to tell us what that was? Like tightish cables or a bit of play in them and what angle the arm should be at closed. It does on the manual ones!
Which gives me an Idea! If we have put to much tension on the cables maybe that is causing the motor to stick and flick open when its at 3/4 throttle?? Try backing it off until the cables only have minimal tension on them?? I expected the manual to have told us more, but say as much tension as like a throttle cable!
I still would have expected you to notice a large change in power delivery if the power valve was staying closed until 3/4 throttle though, it would seem dead as!
Secondly when you go to the Honda dealer have an ask there about the set up for the power valve and cables seeing its not in the manual.
But I still have a little problem in connecting a flat spot with the power valve. I'd still be stripping the carb especially if its been dealing with all that crud that was in the airbox and if you haven't had the carb off for a clean in a long time.
You still didn't say if this flat spot was there from the start or if it developed after a while?
Oh and now its run in and you can rev it to 8k, take the cover off and make sure its operating smoothly.
We couldn't do that on the night on a fresh motor could we??

the nut was NOT on for the inital dome valley mish saturday but that was really a run in period, i only gave it some towards the end, which is when i noticed it, it has got worse since I toot2ed with it. By reattaching the nut I have tensioned the cable and it had heaps of bog down low later tonight. Pretty sure a new cable with help heaps and heading towards less tension..

Yeh mate given that reply! I'd get that power valve set up right! Does it open suddenly when you rev it in the garage! I'd hate to think we are putting to much pressure on that servo. Specially if its worse since you had another go at it. Better get that new cable and make sure its set right and opens smooth! Let us know how you go OK! If you get desperate I'll give John a call at Botany Honda he's really helpful!! PM me your phone number, we should go for a ride sometime anyway!

There was very little carbon on the flap and it worked really well with the barrel off so we didn't strip it out! Spent so much time explaining it to the others we didn't think we had time by then. Although if we had of known when you where going to be done we could have. :girlfight:
Manual: Red had loose pages but we sorta left it as the cable adjuster was snapped and the bolt and a bit of threaded adjuster was sitting down on the arm. It needed promt attention anyway.

No you need to have tension on the cable. Its self positioning in terms of its location when the bike starts.

lol. oh hi guys! im a bit late
pretty much what cheese says.
have the cables to they arent slack, but arent tight. they self adjust as far as initial position goes, so its not that.
and if you have shitty cables, replace them
