Dionysus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dionysus) God of wine, parties/festivals, madness and merriment. He represents not only the intoxicating power of wine, but also its social and beneficial influences. His symbols are the grape vine, ivy, and thyrsus.

Bugger - I'm mentally handicapped - I don't have these bits in my brain obviously. I never felt I was on any 'higher plane' when I was forced to pray as a child...it was just words. Went through the motions for years to avoid getting beat up but never believed a word of it and never actually felt the need to believe. For me it was enough that the universe is an infinate place full of secrets to be explored and explained by science.

I still feel that way and was quite agreived the other day when looking through my 5 year old son's school books to find stuff about god. I do not recall giving my permission to discuss doctrine with a 5 year old. I was sentient enough at that age to be cynical but I feel my son is a bit more trusting.

My experience was the opposite: had to go to Sunday school and accepted it for a few years. My daughter however from 5 years old thought religious teaching at school [ in Ozzie] was laughable, in spite of her being a perfect child she refused religious teachings no matter what I, the school or her precious [religious] grandmother said..............a perfect example of Darwinian evolution!

I think it's in the schools conditions of entry, my wife had a similar reaction. No harm done mate, children need to be exposed to all sorts of ideas. Better the wee lad learns from mum and dad that some people believe in god, have different beliefs, and respect them. Otherwise its pretending that an enormous part of the world population don't have spiritual beliefs which makes it even tougher to explain Islamic terrorism when they ask.

Not knowing bible stories and religious stuff robs kids of part of our language and culture. It isn't necessary to believe anything to know about Noah, David and Goliath, Moses, they are good stories on their own.

"Chariot of the gods" was a cool book. Not necessarily that factual, but introduces the concept of alien intervention [hey that's essentially what god is!?] in a more believable fashion.

That's the type of book that people who hate religion would believe as "gospel truth" along with just about any book knocking religion or God. While I have no love of the established "religions" of this world, Richard Dawkins is an egotistical idiot, so full of his own self-importance and believing in the fawnings of his faithful he can't see past his own nose.

And yes, I have read much of his works.

I must confess I found myself thinking in circles on this one.

God spot is found in brain common throughout mankind
Darwinian theory suggests this gives an evolutionary advantage
Ergo Belief in God is good for survival.

I have my own theories on why that's true - interested to hear other's opinions.

I'm not this proves or disproves the existance of a deity - more to do with the prevalence and seeimingly inherant need for religion in society

reofix
12th March 2009, 17:44
just a little too much protesting... Richard Dawkins didnt start down the God Delusion road by accident ... he is a scientist who got sick of ignorant people making personal attacks on him because science wasnt producing the answers those believer people wanted... so he got a bit pissed off with stoopid people... hardly a crime

.
Please note Science cannot possible give and explanation for an infinite universe eg no beginning or end as per the Professors comments, and it apears that he did not think the research was at logger heads with God

"When we have incomplete knowledge of the world around us, it offers us the opportunities to believe in God. When we don't have a scientific explanation for something, we tend to rely on supernatural explanations," said Professor Grafman, who believes in God.

No...the research says that we have a brain option to believe in God. Clearly we have a choice to use that part or not...either way it's not a bad choice in the whole scheme of things
