Just think what kind of ride we could put together if we get access to land from Orongorongo to Lake Ferry then thru yesterdays land all the way round the coast to ????????????
yeah mate we are going to call it the Wairarapa East Coast Challenge
I think Joe and I could organise that for the not too distant future via the respective land owners we have dealt with!!!
Joe and Dave, get busy you have got a lot of work to do to organize this
I dont see any adventure rides on the calender for May --- sooooo
I was looking for another excuse to come down to Welly, now i have it.
No pressure lads, but where do i sign ........:calm:

im sure it used to go up and over to winui, in the old days.
even if we could just go up as far as we could and return then go round the coast after that, hows that sound....

Todd from the Station who we met on the Orongorongo reccie ride, told me the river track is VERY VERY vicious!!!!!! He also said that if you go up that way you have to be careful about the private land up on the hills. TBH I think he was angling for leading a trail ride for us on the trails away from the coast BUT he said they are full on trail rides not cruisy adv tracks!

I will have Mountie with me and we'd be looking at more of a big bike friendly kind of a day out .So if that ties in with anything you guys are up to ,great !!
I think we have to be in Tga on the 20th so 18th could tie in nicely , might even convince some the crew round here to indulge in a big OE for the weekend :shit:

I might have some more info on that in a few days. The woman who sits next to me at work has just got into 4x4 and I believe they went up there in the weekend. She had some photo's today that she was saying they went up the riverbed a bit then took a track over the hill to Wainui. Apparently there were no gates on the way, dunno if thats a sign that it was open land or what.
They also did Orongrongo station on Saturday, it didn't look anywhere near as bad as we went through. They had to dig out that 2nd slip a bit to get the 4x4's through as it was a 'Family Shiny' run, but nothing like what we had.
I'm hoping to get their GPS log in a few days to se where they went. Once I have that I can overlay it on Google earth and see if there's anything interesting. They had been up on top of the hills somewhere and the views of Wellington were stunning.

I think thats what that Todd guy was on about - you get up there and its open land and you have no idea if you're trespassing on private land or not if no guide with you.

A+ on your home work,
my bro is in to 4x4 clubs, and he says there is a track over there some where,

the coast sounds doable, if shinys go through, its a walk in the park for bikers.

been doing a bit of study on the Orongorongo station river track, on googl earth.
there is a formed track about 1/4 way up river bed, it winds it way up the hill in to the forest park on the winui side. where the pine plantation is
some one find out who owns the hill, and get us in the forest park, might just be doable....

I rode into the Rimutaka Forest Park on a reccie a while back before the Southern Coast ADV - signs say no go for motorbikes in the park itself, sorry mate.

I might not be correct but I thinkthe orginal 4wd track over the hills from the coast road in Wainui to the Orongorongo river started a couple of km below the access to the forest park, it was still doc land but you could get access from them, although I heard it was closed while they were logging the area. the star of it is mention in the 4wd book by Andy Cockroft as cattle ridge I think.

You're exactly right. The access is further south from the main Park entrance. Don't know about now, but when I reccied it, that entrance was closed for logging.

The tracks I saw up there in the photos from the 4x4's last weekend indicated they went through no issues, and there were no gates anywhere.
Might be worth someone popping out there one evening.

I often go for a spin out the Wainui coast road of an evening, so as soon as black beauty is back(hopefully this weekend!) I'm up for a spin out there, if any locals wanna meet up for that.
(Or if noone wants to be seen with the darth vader mobile, I'll go on my own! :shit: )

Hi Paladin, I could be up for an evening ride down the coast next week, not sure what we'll find out though.
It's an excuse for a little ride and maybe we'll find the southern gate open to the land that was being logged - ya never know! On the east side of Coast Road as you head south from Rimutaka Forest Park there are also a couple of tracks that I keep thinking need exploring as there's no mail boxes at the end, no keep out sign/private signs and could be tracks up over the hill. Or they could just be driveways that access lots that haven't been developed yet!
I won't be getting too adventurous while the Trailwaings are still on the bike though, especially if its been wet!
As a future thought, I saw some guys in 4wd's going west from Turakirae Head one day when I was down on one of my evening mini rides! They crossed over the Wainui River where it meets the sea to head towards Baring Head and Pencarrow Head! Could be very heavy going on bikes as that beach is shingle hell but hey maybe once over the river you can get on a 4wd track??? Anyone know?
BTW, I didn't call Orongorongo today as stuff snowballed but will try on Thursday. (darn parent-teacher conferences, scheduled for 10mins and we were there 2.5 hours - grrrrrr!)

I think its the access road to Baring lighthouse. I tried to go up there on the access road from Coast Road - locked gate at the very start 100m off the main road!

yeah there is/used to be a four wheel drive track right around the coast to Eastbourne, I know the gate is locked the Eastbourne end, and would probably be next to Impossible to get access to it as it is designated a walking track/ cycle way now. A 4wd road also goes over the hills to Baring head lighthouse, a couple of km before the end of the coast road and joins up with it.

You have to be careful crossing the Wainuiomata river near the coast as the bottom tends to be very soft, Last time I did it many years ago (read in my teens) I ended up with my back wheel buried above axle height, and nearly got stuck in it. The coast is also now supposedly fully fenced off and walking access only, although I think it is controled by Orongrongo Station.
