Hello Everybody. :scooter: day ride :scooter:

ive been working on this section of land for a little while, and have finally got premission to pass over private maori land,,,:sweatdrop,,, working with land owner and D.O.C.

::ride: Ok heres the ride. :ride:

Start Featherston mobil, between 9-9:30am plz.
an early start will get you home at a decent hour.
will travel down pigeon bush, on to east west access rd, on to Kahutara rd, on to martinbrough rd, on to ngawi rd, travel round to light house,
from light house we travel up the coast towards white rock, to locked gate, where land owner will meet us and open the gate, from there travel white rock road, can either travel over summer hill or in to cafe at martinbrough for pit stop (plz chose your option.)
and then travel the masterton martinbrough rd to masterton.
In the afternoon.
i have a nice loop ride, with paper roads.
we travel up Rangitumau rd to Dorsets rd, on to northcroft rd, back to my house for cupper and fresh baking, and chat.

there will be a small charge per bike for coast access.
this has been asked from land owner, for up keep of coast road.
$10 per bike, im asking for a maximum of 15 bike plz.

i have added a few pics
there will be some sand sections, and rocky sections as well.

bring your camera,
not many people are allowed through here any more.

there is a old road through the coast, 4x4 and a few cars have been through, so should be suitible for bigger bikes.

any questions plz ask

ride will only be cancelled if theres a hurricane coming.

please place your name if your coming on this ride, on the calendar.

thanks very much.

yip I plan on being there - God willing - thanks for going to the trouble of organising this Joe - the photos suggest to me that larger whales like my GS will be a handful in that sand - I plan on fitting a new Mitas E07 to the rear of m DR during this coming week and using the DR for this ride (wimp that I am) - Balrog you up for this?

Ciao Aslan :soon:

Exactly right, would be a good opportunity indeed :scooter:. Regrettably I don't get to ride very often (commute doesn't count) I only do 4ks each of gravel a day, 10 figure-8 and one attempt to do a willy before work and not much more :sweatdrop ... the odd weekend attach at Karapoti which is always nice, good value for money for me.

...land owner was more worryed about us destorying his land....

So we all need to make sure we don't blow this opportunity for next time.
Perhaps a few riding ground rules should be laid out?

I felt pretty embarrassed on the Orongorongo ride when right in front of the
farmers house ( and farmer ) , one rider roosted up their bike and dug a furrow right to the gate.
I thought that was pretty stink just after we'd finally managed to get access.
The farmer didn't look to impressed either.

I thought not riding like that would have been obvious, but perhaps it needs to be stated.

yes my freind, you hit the nail right on the head.
i recall this at the station house.

im thinking i might put a cap of 10 bikes, this time round, smaller group easer to keep a eye on.

im on good terms with D.O.C as they also have control over the beach half of the southerlands track, as well as the 4x4 club.

the coast land owner told me in the first ph call, { na mate thers no road there } so thats when i started to explane who we are, and what we intended to do in there.

i think i might strap a tui brick on back just to wet his lips for next time..... hopefully.

Please put me down for this. I have been through this section several times over the years, before it was closed and first when I was looking at moving to an F650 from my then R80G/S. Took the standard GS and a few weeks later a Dakar through and decided on the Dakar!

I always found the downhill from the rockfall/scree area heading north to be a bit daunting on a big bike although easy enough to walk down. No problems on a DRZ400 I used to have though, although I guess the track has not got better over the years since!

Having to take my partner to the A+E the evening before the Orongoronga ride put paid to this one unfortunately, looked like I missed a really good one. Hopefully my attending the 21st event will go to plan! Look forward to seeing you again Stephen, it has been a while.

yea mate might be right there.

ok a couple options for riders to think about, for after coast section.

option one.
dorsets road / northcoft rd. short and sweet.
gravel and grass tracks.

option 2
tinui valley rd, te mai rd, pack spur rd (paper rd,) matakoina rd, castlepoint, then home.
seal and gravel roads
if we get a good day option 2, will have great sea views,
and we will travel along side the sea.

have a think and let us know,
so far long range weather looks good.

theres is about a 25min ride to get to tinui valley rd, along castlepoint road. only thing is later on we would have to back track along a section of that road.

the other roads need to travel along seal to get to them as well, and sadly back track along a part of them too.

il get my REALY BIG MAP out and do some resurch.

Joe, if we're doing that, why don't we start & fuel up from Martinborough instead of Featherston so its less kms to Ngawi/Cape Palliser?
I.e. avoid that backtracking cut across from the western road to the lake ferry road if you'd started in Featherston.

I know it only saves a few kms but those of us on little tanks might need that bit extra fuel once we've been all the way around Cape Palliser, plus we can get a decent latte in Martinborough to start the day right! :2thumbsup

a little bad news.
the pirinoa store opens at 9am, thats the good bit..
there is fuel there, thats another good bit.

but the fuel is around 4-5c up on market prices, thats the bad bit.
reason, its a private owned fuel station, and costs them to keep the fuel there, which i under stand, being a small country village.

so if you chaps want we will have to go via martinbrough, to save you chaps a few cents on fuel.

your thoughts please.

I was thinking the same thing. My bike should do that but I haven't got the tuning right yet so am a fair bit short. Best I've got out of a tank so far was the last one at 370km's off 30 litres. It only did 310km when i got it.

For the avoidance of doubt, while I know the time to meet is to be 0900, is this 0900 at Featherston, Martinborough or Pirinoa? Despite talk about the other locations I am assuming Featherston is still to be the start point?

Found some (pre-electronic) pictures of trips over "the Desert" sand area and down the steep slope down to White Rock on 1) the demo Dakar in 2000 and 2) DRZ400. I recall now I came off the Dakar after the sand area, falling hard against a rock wall beside the track. However, I took the full force of the fall with my left knee, which by being caught between the bike and a large rock, held it clear of the ground and prevented any damage to Motorad's bike! My knee however hurt for many weeks. Still ordered one.

The ride round to Ngawi and thru to White Rock was awesome today with some nice gravel & technical trail riding along the coast on the private land Joe had arranged access for and some nice gravel roads!

The new DR was great except for one slight problem - it REALLY could have used a bash plate on it!!!
There was me being very sensible and avaoiding large rocks etc but when I pulled up to stop just before the long shingle/sand climb EddieB noticed oil draining out from under the bike - yep a small gouge was pissing oil out - BUGGER!
Who knows how it happened, I sure didn't hit anything of any size, but Balrog saved the day with a tube of Knead-It! Fortunately looks like it had only just happened as engine oil level was good afterwards, lucky escape for yours truly! So the DR is in Masterton awaiting a weld and the bashplate that I had already planned for it. Damn close call!!!!

Bart & Eddie both got camera happy so am sure the carnage will be reported in piccie form later !!!! :oi-grr:

Still at least the waitress in Toppys was lookin darn HOT to cheer me up!

Big thanks to Joe for the organising, Aslan for keeping me company on the gravel as i took it easy on the new bike and unknown Trailwing tyres, Eddie for handling the knead-it job and Balrog for accompanying me to Masterton, to deliver the bike to Joe's ready for its weld & bashplate, and giving me a ride back on the back of the mighty GS - cheers Jim!

So we're coming along this nice track across private land, a few nice technical parts, right along the coast. It's sunny, waves are crashing on the beach, there's just our friendly group being respectful of the land as we ride and no other soul or vehicle around for miles. I'd stopped for something and Eddieb pulls up next to me and says:

"I (farking) love adventure riding!"

I think that probably summed up the feeling we were all having inside today - there were alot of big smiles on faces!

was a great ride, and a great group of guys.

a small mishap with daves new bike, just one of them things that can happen in the terrain we were at.
will get it in to alloy doctors guys on mon see what can be done.

time was running out for us in afternoon, so second half of ride was canned.

so a quick treck in to southlands hut was decided on.

and then it pissed down,,, and yes i got very wet.... bugger.

Sounds like Jim & I were lucky mate, we didn't get any rain until a little light stuff just as we entered the Eastbourne bays! Was a blast on the back of the GS going over the Rimutaka Hill!

Thanks again for arranging the land access Joe, great track round there, was totally lovin it, oil leek or not! :2thumbsup

We should also shout a "thank you" for Frank, the landowner, who wizzed back with spare oil just in case I needed it - very cool of him!

Take care of the Black Beast for me mate! ;)

home safe, wet and frozen at 6.45pm after a magic day - great company - as always on these rides you experience of the vital sensations that remind one that life is precious and for living to the max - what scenery around the Wairarapa Coat and awesome weather till early afternoon - great food, coffee and service :sweatdrop at Toppys as always ;)

In the hour I've been home have showered - teeth chattering uncontrollably on entering the shower - cooked and eaten dinner (a reheat of my cooking from earlier in the week (batching at the mo) )- had a medicinal whisky, milo laced with honey (no not the lass from Toppys) and am no on to a cleansing beer - at peace with the world and buzzing from a great day.

Gotta love that Sutherlands Hut track and the ride in and out through the Haurangis.

Had a moment leaving Martinborough in the wet when the new Mitas E07 on the rear stepped out in the wet (slippery seal) - JMJ did warn me.

Big thanks to all for your company as always and special thanks to JunkManJoe for organising access through the station from the Lighthouse to White Rock. Farm Manager Frank is the 'salt of the earth' eh - going and fetching oil for Paladin's machine should he have needed it. Ciao (sorry no pics from me - wifey has the camera with her visiting the granddaughter)

PS Paladin - sorry for your misfortune with the hole in your DR's case - as my late Dad would say 'rotten bad luck'

Cheers Aslan :woohoo:

And despite Pampa's claims that if there's no photo's it didn't happen, he did slip in the puddle at the entrance of the Sutherlands Hut track and pretty much completely submerged the bike.

I've never seen anyone move so fast to avoid getting caught by the camera though. My camera was only half out of the case and he was upright and out of the puddle again.

Got home soaked, warmed up in the shower, Mark how was the Akatarawa road, did you go that way. On the way back had to put my foot down hard on that 35k corner at the start of the Akatarawa Road, a first.

Joe good stuff organising, that view round the coast, spectacular. Pablo what happened in that puddle? well no one was around to see me, my front wheel caught in a grassy rut coming into Sutherlands.

Can I also add my thanks to organiser-diplomat Joe to that of all the others – “well done that man”. And thanks too to the rest of the ride team for a great day of company. Enjoyed catching up with those I know and meeting a few “new” people.

A day of sometimes dramatic and striking weather against the landscape. Thick fog over trees with the rising low sun casting a dramatic back light. Beautiful still, clear and cool conditions on the Coast (you can’t beat Wellington on a good day). Bright late afternoon sun against dramatic black frontal clouds ahead along the rugged chasm the beautiful Haurangi Road runs up. Heavy (sometimes very heavy) rain.

This variety is part of the appeal of adventure riding, although I would have been satisfied with the final rain experience being a far shorter one. I have to say that as I rode back towards Featherston I was very glad I had Thunderbird 2 parked there ready to carry Thunderbird 4 (and me) home in dry and warm relative comfort. The rain was so heavy in Featherston that the gutters on the road were overflowing and I decided to load the Pampera up by parking the van against a shop verandah, to avoid a complete soaking.

As an aside, I would commend those compact walkers/trampers wet weather gear sets that roll up and zip tightly into their own pockets to adventure-trail riders. I always carry a pair (“Rainbird” brand) when wearing a fabric riding suit and they were a godsend yesterday.

Hey Joe
Its called Kneed-it metal putty.
I think I got it from Mitre-10 or super cheap auto.

Been carrying it around for years, finally got a chance to use it.
Didn't know how good it was until now :)

Sure was good and saved the day no less! What I was surprised at was that it adhered to a pretty shiny surface in just 10mins AND even on the underside of the case it stayed in place - pretty impressive stuff! Not that I wasn't worrying my arse off for an hour til i got to Toppys!

Cheers again Jim, you saved my bike for sure mate! :niceone:

Fantastic number of pics Jim, you're a star mate! :niceone:

I pity Marks if you ever catch him with the KLR woopsied - you SO owe him for all those shots he has taken of your Beemer on its side in deep sand!
I second this post Great Photos guys makes a days adventure last a week :niceone:
I am sure we will catch Marks some day on camera a Mate:msn-wink:

Looks like it was a good ride, have done this trip a number of times on different bikes. The area has certainly changed a lot over the years. That final decsent to White Rock has changed heaps - attached are a couple of photo's from when Skunk, My Wife Viv & I did it in 2001

Marks looking at his bike and wising it was a bit bigger :)
actually its just the perfect size for me. big enough to be really comfortable on the road but not too much of a handful off road. I are very happy with it

Am glad the patch didn't drop off in the night and spill oil all over your shed mate - phew!

And you've cleaned the bikes - CHEERS!!!!!!

Hope you got all that nasty nasty crap lube off the chain that Motorad put on it and then lubed it properly for me!

And hope you didn't forget to clean the oil off the tyres!
And wax and polish the tank!
And make sure there's no smear marks on the lights or mirrors!

Come on, be a good mate!

I'm going to blame the five minutes it takes me to pick my bike up as to the
reason I get caught so often.

e.g it sounds like Pampa picked his up in about 6 nanoseconds

:bleh:

Your pic was my second lie down in about 2 meters.
I managed to bury the back wheel so badly I couldn't move.
So I pushed the dainty little bike over and dragged its arse to the side.
Then it took me 3 goes to get it up. I got back on it got it moving again and before I could stand up the front washed on me and down I went.

As you can imagine I remained
cool , calm :angry2: and collected :brick: the whole time.

Well it looks like the PD is out of action til I get some time to strip it down.

On the motorway home last night my indicators, horn and brake lights all stopped working. I'd thought water must have got in somewhere and hoped it would be right once it had dried out.

But it's not.

I've checked all the fuses and they are fine. I had a look for any disconnected wires but the wiring for the Touratech Rallye computer is a rats nest, wires and huge plugs that don't plug into anything just hanging around and tucked in everywhere, and the junction box where the computer connects to the original loom in under the tank so I'm going to have to pull that off.

And while in there I discovered one of the plugs for a cell in my battery has fallen out, and the others were all either fingertight or just sitting in the top of the plug thread. I'll have to see if a local battery shop has one lying around or if you can buy them as a spare.

Yes you could ride around if the gate at the lighthouse wasnt locked, there used to be a mini rally at Stone Wall, at the spot where you guys were going through the stream, held in June. The scree slope looks as tho it's got bigger, was it still soft & deeply rutted at the top?
The Pukemanu adventure ride a few years back went along the coast from Tora to Cape Palliser

Would have loved to tag along BUT being in Aussie it's a bit far. Have attached a picture of a KTM 950 at a recent rally, you think the DR 650 tank was big this thing was HUGE

besides I could see the malign look on the eyes of the people around ready to take their cameras rather than helping a poore comrade in difficulty nothing seen before on this ride of course

Hey guys, looks like you had a top ride yesterday, I am envious. :oi-grr:
The photos are excellent - that gravel slide before White Rock is ginormous.

Congrats on the new DR, Dave. Now it's broken in you can start treating it rough next week :argh:

The wife & I did a road trip around the East Cape so have banked many brownie points. Highlights were swimming with Moko the dolphin at Mahia and visiting White Island volcano. But unfinished business is to ride the Motu Rd & Lake Waikaremoana sometime.
