as to how much time, money and effort has been wasted (or otherwise) on the Wanganui/Whanganui debate??

Mind you, what else have they got to do there (however it's spelt)??

I was just thinking about typical small towns... the big news is all about the spelling of their name.

Then I realised... just how much did the commission cost, for the Auckland debate, plus all the other arguing on how Auckland should be run :pinch:

Pleeeaaase, don't even let me get started on this subject. You know, democracy vs the vocal minority... nooo... I said I wouldn't get myself worked up. Aaaaaaarghhhh!

We wouldn't like it if Asians overtook Christchurch then used their sheer voting power to change the name to something like Tianamen. The Mayor needs to lighten up & stop using democracy as a front for his...
Just fix it by doing it - 2 systems like Egmont. Starting with friendly mail addressed to the Mayor of Wh - it would be a victimless crime if no rocks.

Probably not a lot of money, but lots of hot air. It's hard to agree on the spelling for a language that was oral, and had local dialects.

Both sides of my family come from Wanganui, and TBH even if the spelling changes it'll still be the same wild west place.

honestly, im sick to death of all the bullshit. maybe i should start a fight to get it changed to the original name of petre? my ancestors named the city and the natives took it back off them. my great, great, great, great, etc grandfather died for the name petre /sarcasm.

ken mair should take a running jump. nobody likes him, and nobody cares. i will continue to spell it the way i was taught, and thats minus the fucking h.

Back in '84 my maths teacher was also the school Maori studies teacher.

He was highly respected and knowledgable. He was famous for getting kids from the two local sub-tibes to "play nice" in the Maori culture group.

We had a chat about this topic. (Yes, way back then.)

His considered opinion was that in the local dialect of the Wanganui area tribe it was correct that there was no "h" and that there was no one specific correct all-of-New-Zealand way to spell everything.

I trust his opinion, so it all seems to me a beat-up for attention by people who may or may not know better, to push a National* agenda for more recognition or power.

(* meaning N.Z., not the political party.)

Spell it the way it was spelled before white man arrived! How hard could that be?

Even then there is debate as to whether it is stick-stick-flax-rock or stick-flax-rock.

So this sets the precedent that we have to standardise "maori spelling" across the country?

So we no need to be consistent and change Aoraki to Aorangi because after all that's just the way the suvvern maori speak...can of whuckin worms that is.

I'm also lacing the boot firmly to the other foot and demanding that the "w" in Renwick cease to be pronouced.

Hey Ken! Mr Mair! :finger:

Oh my God... noooooooo surely not. So what's the basis of "the missing 'h'" complaint then? It was only there for a tiny fraction of... the whole of forever!

Just change it to WangaVegas, the same as all other small towns do.

I'd like to suggest the following changes to the Minister of Changing Placenames.

"Taupo" will henceforth become "Toe-Paw"
"Te Puke" Will be "Tee-puckky""
"Whangamomona" will be "Te Pub"

Any complaints...

The problem with all this is why do Maori think that the way they want to spell things (given they never had a written language in the past) is the only way. We are meant to be a bicultural country so why cant it be Whanganui to the Maori and Wanganui to the whitey's and other ethnicities.

Hell, I just got back a wee while ago from my trip to Europe and my lovely daughter's wedding. Now Zurich was also Zuerich, Rome was Roma, Florence was Firenza, Naples was Napoli, London was Londres and no one gave a rats arse that the names were spelt differently and even spoken differently depending on who was doing the speaking.

Sharpen up you Maoris and start respecting other people's cultures and you might get more respect yourself. In the meantime it just comes across as whinging and singular demands.

There is also confusion on how to spell the mayors name. Many options have been put forward, lots are 4 letter words.

According to local iwi in South Taranaki (one elder now 75yrs)told me about 10-15yrs ago after people were pc saying Tawhiti Rd was pronounced Tarfeety, that her tribe never emphasised the wh as f,stand corrected but she said it might be a Taranaki thing as wellshe never emphasised the lingo and even 20-25yrs ago was annoyed their kids didn't want to learn maori, they (kids)said waste of time.

As for Mair when he was in the navy he would play rugby for the europeans against ethnics, never played for ethnics, funny how politics change as you age,and want to be cool,at least Minto has always been against racism since year dot.
