View Full Version : Orongorongo Full-On Adventure Ride, Sunday 12 April

Paladin
1st April 2009, 21:06
OK,

I have got us confirmed access to Orongorongo Station for Saturday April 11th OR Sunday 12th April at $15 per head for a full-on assault, ie we can do any or all of the following for $15:

1. Go up the 4wd track along Orongorongo River and up into/onto the overlooking hills!!!! :woohoo:
2. Go along the coast 4wd track and return.
3. Go along the 4wd coast track, exit, go to Lake Ferry or Martinborough for lunch AND retrace & go back thru Orongorongo again back to Wainuiomata.

Personally I say lets go ADVENTURING and start by going up the Orongorongo River 4wd track and see where we can get to and then see what's left of the day after that, so maybe a bit along the coast later in the day. That way if the River idea becomes a bust we can still do the other coast stuff anyway BUT we start with NEW TERRAIN!!!!

We will have no guide so it will be a Full-On Adventure!!!!!!!!

Therefore, I suggest early start at Wainui BP, maybe 8.30am plus bring lunch in case we stay on Orongorongo Station all day!

I know its short notice BUT have done it this way so there's 2 full weeks before the KCR, just incase anyone has bike damage(EEEK!!!!) that needs time to sort out before the KCR!

Who wants to come play on a full on assault of Orongorongo?

:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

Lets have some feedback on which day suits asap please as I would like to tell land owner this Friday evening which day we are coming!
Thx guys!

Bugger. If it was the Friday or Sunday I could go, but I can't do the saturday that weekend.
Bascially I can only do the days the shops aren't open that weekend.

No I didn't ask - thought I would leave it to adventure heehee! Same goes for the orongorongo River - we go adventuring and see what we can accomplish - just for the hell of it!!!!! :2thumbsup

Note I have asked Mods to change thread title to also say:

"...... or Sunday 12th April".

Cos such short notice I thought give people chance for feedback and we go for day which suits most we can.

I want to tell land owner Friday evening what date tho so hopefully we get some quick KB'ers feedback and then we set day!!!!

I'm hoping anyway!

Ok so I just had a fly by on google earth, can definitely see the track going up along the east of the Orongorongo River from the farm houses and an obvious track going up into the hills east of the river and onto the hilltops. Who knows what the tracks will be like but it looks like the adventure is there waiting for us!
(the land owner DID tell me you CAN get up there on bikes! Question will just be how challenging it becomes - but that's how we like it in Welly, right?! :2thumbsup )

The GPX tracklog from a recent Shiny Family 4x4 club trip up there can now be found under my GPS tracklogs link in my signature.

Whats in the tracklog can't be that rough if it was a family shiny run.

They went up the hill before the end of Coast road, and came down onto the river.

Not far off the truth actually!
:crybaby:

The sad story so far:
Fuel tank - both sides scratched.
Rear Shrouds - both sides scratched, hell we'll call one gauged!
Rear Indicators - scuffed.
Front fork rubber covers- both scrunched.
Acerbis handguards - one gauged, one scuffed.
Front mudguard - gauged & scratched!
Engine casing - 1 weld + scratched both sides.
Mirrors - left side destroyed, right side well scuffed!
Seat - scuffed.
Reg plate - bent!

Not bad for 2 rides!!!!!!! Plenty of room for more character to be added yet!!!!
Hey the speedo works, horn is still on it and I think I have two new looking indicators, and the headlight isn't cracked,
what more do you want?!

Wonder what it will look like after 12 months of ownership?

At least all those scratches & dents are the result of having the kind of fun you can't put a price tag on - I'm at peace with it man!

I have just confirmed to the land owner we will be coming on:

SUNDAY 12TH APRIL with arrival at Orongorongo Station approx 9am.

Going on Sunday has allowed Eddieb to join us, so a special thanks to those of you that gave flexibility to do either day, much appreciated as Eddie had to miss Odlins due to heavy cold and it will be great for him to get out with us on a challenging ride after missing that!

Looking forward to it already!!!

I'm chewing through my rear 606 fairly quickly (doubt that I'll get 5000k and maybe more likely 4000 or so) and might go to an E09 next time. I'm very happy with the 606 on the front and will stick with that.

Yeah am gonna go with the D606's as seems they a bit more sticky on road and I kinda like pushin it on corners!

(Sunday night in the dark caught the left hand turn cresting the hill at the top of the long passing lane going over the Haywards all wrong at 140kph - very large clenching moment! For anyone who hasn't read the whole thread, the title change that has just been done for me by mod Hitcher, reflects the decision within the thread to do this ride on this Sunday 12th, as opposed to the original Saturday option.

To everyone that is coming on Sunday:

Although the meet time at the Wainui BP is 8.30am, please be aware we need to hit the road from there at 8.45/8.50am as we are expected at Orongorongo Station for 9am to meet the owner for payment & keys.

And a gentle reminder: Lets be respectful on the land and absolutely no roosting anywhere near the farmhouses when we get started and NOT in front of the land owner for damn sure please!
He likes our group (and our $$$$ !!) and we want to go back, so lets be cool as usual!

Nuff said!

This one has the water levels just below the water intake about 15-20km up the river. http://www.gw.govt.nz/story910.cfm It says it is only updated 6 weekly, but seems to be very current if you cut the dates down to the last week or two.

This site has a serries of Jpgs of Topographical maps of the Orongorongo area, that one of you might want to print out. http://www.orongo.50g.com/map_page.htm

Iv'e been a busy boy too - new 15T front sproket (16T left to big a gap from 1st 2nd as I found out behind Shannon), Girly muffler removed and Jardine refitted to get back the 'snap' it had, serrated pegs fitted (nearly went tits up on that muddy trail off Tokimaru Valley Rd last weekend with muddy foot slipping off rubber footpeg) so hopefully I will all ready for some knarsty stuff in the morning

I've also been busy in the garage. New filter & engine oil. Fork spring spacers & more oil. Experimented with windscreen extensions but needs testing on calm day. Removed rubber inserts from footpegs - only a 10mm bolt & serrated pegs hiding underneath.

Planning to replace the tyres before KCR so have been reading the tyre forum. Overload, overload.

So going for a ride to the Brooklyn windmill & airport radar station now. CU tomorrow.

starter trouble has been repaired.

man what a mess it was in there.

water had got in through a rubber seal not set correct by factory.

can see the seal in one of the pics, the two marks on rubber where it was not fitted correct.

in side case was a lot of water damage, up front and along the bottom, see pic.
at the back, the magnets where stuck in, as they should be springy..nope. so cleaned everything up, got around 6mm play on all magnets, put it back togeather and she burst in to life....yipy.

Hmmm not the first instance i have seen of this on a dr, may pay to check regular if going through water or washing your bike.

PS. Not a DR vs KLR thing, just info.

hi andy,
yea mate in second pic, there is 4 small square boxes on the rear plate, in side is small magnets, they should all be sticking out towards the center, they rest on the rear shaft, in pic one, at the back of the shaft there is a copper section, this where the power contacts, to to make the starter spin, that copper section was black,

Hey Joe, a minor correction - what you refer to as magnets are in fact carbon brushes that, as you say, get the power to the copper commutator. (just noting in case someone pulled the brushes out and thought they were buggered because they were not magnetic)

If you are ever desperate for replacement brushes, you can find similar things in car starter motors or generators. Carbon is soft enough to file to size.

have a great time tomorrow, sorry I can't be joining you all. Economics and suchlike.

Okay, so got permission to do this ride at the last minute.

All set to go, and bugger, wont start. So I'm running late, hoping that the guys haven't gone without me, get to the bottom of the Wainui Hill, & who's there to greet me but Joe, Andy, and Andrew & his friends with a trailer load of bikes.

Bugger, Joe......Hope it's something minor (but it doesn't look it).

Met with the others at BP Wainui then onto Orongorongo.

Bugger but the first hill seemed steep 1st thing. Eddie had a small drop here.

Views from the the top were awesome.

12th April 2009, 17:11
Eddie, Dave & me sat & watched the fun as the guys did a loop in the hills. MarkS was heard across about 1/2 a mile 'shit that's steep', for one downhill section. Andy Mac & Jim (Balrog) dropped their bikes on that...

Funny how it was easy on Trail bikes (they did a couiple of loops & were keen for more), but a challenge on Adventure Bikes with twice the weight.

Also the challenging uphill from this morning didn't seem too bad on the way down.

After lunch we had a ride up the river trails (until we met a grumpy DoC worker).

Dave had a big off on the trail - hit an erosion hole, lost it, went about another 25 ft then headbutted a bank. He's killed his helmet, but its done its job. He also injured his back...but kept riding. Quite a bit of damage to the front of the bike.

The last photo is the guys trying to figure out where to go after the DoC worker discussion (apparently we were tresspassing).

Another memorable day and great company. Thanks Dave for all the organising and the whole team for the companionship.

Joe, I would like to be able to say you didn't miss anything - but that would be a lie. How can we have TWO completely still and sunny days in Wellington over Easter? TWO! And get to ride on the coast and the coastal hills on one of them? Look on the bright side, it was a lot better that your bike ceased to proceed before we got into the rough stuff. Better luck next time.

First batch of pictures show the team high above Orongorongo Station and two tiny bikes negotiating a rocky bit of the trail in the big scenery. Around the corner and there is the Wairarapa spread out before us! Looking down from the highest point of the trail towards Wellington Harbour in the distance. The last steep descent from the "trail loop" on the high point of the station, Jim's 1150GS "resting" and Mark lowering his KLR engine off towards the rest of the bikes far below.

Not a breath of wind despite the exposure and altitude. A breeze would have been a relief, some of the group finished their water before the ride ended.

After a (self catered) lunch on the grounds of the Station we headed up the Orongorongo River. Plan was to head over the ridges to the left (West) but we missed the turn off across the river aned ended up where we should not have been, in the Forest Park.

Dave came off the DR650 heavily when deflected by a small wash in the track and added more damage to an impressive list accrued in only a few short weeks of ownership. A man always prepared to push himself beyond his comfort zone and grow, although this became a little too literal today, with some painful injuries - although not sufficient to bring his ride to an end. I think you will be sore Monday Dave!

After (accidentally) penetrating the DOC estate as far as we could and being turned back 3 km from the end of the navigable track, we returned to the Coast and partly reprised the South Coast Ride of a few weeks back, although it was too late to make it all the way to the gate and return to Wellington via Martinborough. It was agreed there will be a reprise of the Coast loop later. A few of us checked out the big wash out, riding over it. I believe the sharp erosion lips of the South Coast day have now been worn down and are a lot more manageable than they were back then.

Eddie contemplating Dave's rather bent Suzuki. The team stopped as far up the river as (most of us) penetrated. Leaving the Park and back into Orongorongo Station. On the big scree slope. Met up with one of the station staff and his mate on the scree - these boys are tough, they don't need helmets (or any other gear!). Pumping up the tyres ready for seal and home again, using air supplied from Jim's 1150 Adventure. Wish it had an espresso machine standard as well!

Again thanks to Dave for organising all this and to the station management for having us. I didn't come off today but nevertheless I am tired enough to be sleeping well tonight!

Well what a day. I'm feeling battered and bruised, with slight swelling in my left hand after my river incident, but no doubt no where near as sore as Dave must be.
I managed to put a crack in a rocker cover, bend a crash bar, break one of the handle bar guard mounts, and put some big scratches down the side of the tank on the GS.

The views were amazing

CNUT Hill Challenge

Is this a cunning plan to reduce the numbers for the South Island trip to a more manageable level by means of breaking a few bikes and bodies a fortnight ahead of time?

I am certainly interested in having a "look". I may not be keen to try once I have had a look but I am always in for a challenge! If I had more time (to get sprockets in from UK) I would gear the Pampera down even more for this.

Left side neck and upper back in middle and right still really sore & stiff; goin to docs this arvo for check on it - I think its all muscular but better safe than sorry, and yes ACC may be an issue so will be going!

BIG BIG thx to Howie for allowing me to use his garage yesterday afternoon - we worked on the bike for 3 1/2 - 4hr and got it pretty ship shape one way or another! Just gotta sort new rear indicators, some plastic film to go over the headlight(or new headlight LOL!) and sort wheel balancing out on front(hope thats what it is as we release some lateral torque off the forks already!) The bars are actually in almost dead straight condition, it was the riser main bolt that was VERY FOOKED! Straightened it but needs replacing asap with a new one before any knocks - my guess it was a tad bent from Odlins crash and that was the weak point so it went rather than the bars, which is fine but its gotta get replaced now as def a major weak point! Ally backing plate on reg plate, headlight assembly all straighted so lookin pretty good but also lookin WELL used HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

:crybaby:

Thx also to Joe & Eddie for ther offers to help with repairs and to all of you for your encouragement and support after such a major off! I truly feel bloody lucky to be sittin here without a broken neck and BIG lesson learned; I might like to push myself to improve BUT gotta know when to back off too and take the sensible course of action! ALSO I gotta get some cash together for proper body armour for our offroad days if I'm gonna keep pushing myself!

Took it easy last nite but have had quick look at photos - as always thx to everyone who played photographer - so kind of you guys to give us all a record of a wicked day out!

I'm being a grumpy old prick here but make sure you did learn your lesson. I woke up today with a very uncomfortable neck (little better now) courtesy of a broken neck from my little crash back on the 6th April 07 (Good Friday back then). Remember that surviving to tell the tale is only one part of the story - living with it for the rest of your life is another story. Thankfully I only get occasional reminders because it would suck if every morning was like this morning.

My wife now pillions most places with me - not sure if she truely likes being a pillion or wants to keep an eye on me :msn-wink:

some plastic film to go over the headlight(or new headlight LOL!)

I think this would be premature to replace it now if you are going up cnut hill

I'm being a grumpy old prick here but make sure you did learn your lesson. I woke up today with a very uncomfortable neck (little better now) courtesy of a broken neck from my little crash back on the 6th April 07 (Good Friday back then). Remember that surviving to tell the tale is only one part of the story - living with it for the rest of your life is another story. Thankfully I only get occasional reminders because it would suck if every morning was like this morning.

My wife now pillions most places with me - not sure if she truely likes being a pillion or wants to keep an eye on me :msn-wink:

Cheers R

in light of this accident have you considered wearing a mx style neck brace as added protection?

i have also added a swater tight sealant to the two joins.
yea the rubber piece that was sticking out was underneath so i couldnt see it.

Though about it. Had 6 weeks to read all I could about helmets and neck braces. Conclusion was that snell helmets are bad, DOT, JIS or ECE helmets are good, MX style neck braces are bad and the Leatt style brace is good.

Snell helmets are too stiff and transmit too much energy to the head in an effort to minimise the likelyhood of the helment crushing or being punctured. Obviously the DOT, JIS or ECE are more crush/puncture prone but transmit less energy.

MX braces stop over rotation of the neck but act as a fulcrum so rather than twist your neck appart your leaver it appart using your helmet and brace. I think from memory the Leatt style braces are much more snugg against the helmet and more flesable so they stop the over rotation and minimise the fulcrum effect. Problem is the cost of circa $1k (though this is comming down)

End result (well for me anyway) - pick your time to be a Peterhansel wannabe.

I've had a huge amount of 'offs' over the years. Admittedly, they have all been reasonably low speed ones, and mostly off road. I believe you actually learn how to fall off safely. Nothing beats having good gear though.

Anyway, I've been toying with the idea of organising a 'trail ride' for adventure bikes. My family own a rather large farm of rolling hill country. We could have an easy offroad day for big bikes. This would be no pressure, and more to improve peoples skills and have fun.

Whatcha reckon?

hopefully its just not getting a charge to the battery so your battery is flat=no more spark.May be your messing around with the starter has affected the cahrging...my 2c anyway!

well thanks for your comment, but i dont think me cleaning the starter is going to do any thing to the batt or charge system.

It's half way between the Waihi Falls and Pongaroa, so may have to be an over nighter, as it's a long way for people to come. Might have to be a summer thing also, as it can get pretty boggy. The next couple of months look full up, so may have to wait.

When we were giving you a push getting going up one nasty hill I was impressed with your clutch/throttle control - I certainly couldn't have done it any better - little 2 strokes can be a bitch on a steep hill start

If you are happy with the size of the DT175 beg a ride on a DT230 - heaps more low end grunt and will sit happily at 100-110 all day

great to meet you

Hi Guys!

Ok so I am guessing that to regulars I have been conspicuously absent from this forum.....

Tonight is the first night I have felt like I am not in some surreal place, well mostly! I now realise I have actually been in shock from Sunday thru to today, as i just read thru the thread and there's a couple of posts I have no recollection of typing!

So, although it would be an epic to respond to every comment, please forgive me for just typing one general post!

Firstly can I now reiterate how much it meant to me that within a few hours I had offers from 3 of my mates on here to help fix my bike on Monday, it meant alot guys, thx! Also the texts of support and checking I was ok were really thoughtful - man you start to realise what good mates are all about and certainly backs up one of the reasons I moved here from the UK - Kiwis are awesome people! I have already found out that I have received at least 2 texts that I have absolutely no recollection of receiving and have read & deleted and have no memory or it! If anyone sent me a text I did not respond to please accept my apologies but as said above I now realise that i was suffering from shock in a big way - according to a very close friend who is a nurse and my doctor! Unfortunately the doctor visit 5pm Tuesday i think added to the shock/trauma - he had me take in my helmet and printed copies of the photos on here - he said I may have 2 fractures in my back but poss ligament damage - will find out Thursday after x-rays at 11am - its minor, probs not discs but the little boney things that stick out from your spine whatever they are called, but just needs checking. The rest is as I suspected and muscular trauma. The additional shock thing was that he is luckily a specialist in accident trauma and he said based on what I remember of the accident and my description that he couldn't believe I didn't at the very least break my neck and if he hadn't seen me and had that accident explained he would've been expecting to see a patient with at least a broken neck! This hit me VERY hard I think!
Anyway, as you know Howie & I have done much of the work to repair the bike, I've bought the new indicators, sorted insurance claim, ordered new helmet etc etc, just waiting for that x-ray tomorrow to see where I go next!

DEFINITELY realise that I need to curb my enthusiasm and inbuilt need to challenge myself with a tad more care to riding to the terrain and within safe limits for my experience - just to think a bit more carefully about how far I am pushing that envelope! I have 2 young daughters and they need their dad!

The more I think about it, the more I realise what an awesome bunch of blokes/mates I get to ride with and want you guys to know how much you mean to me and what your support, encouragement and concern has meant to me through both trying to improve my riding and through this major accident and my reflection on the whole incident! MASSIVE THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!

Just some tidbits: Yeah have alrady been looking at body armour and neck supports and I am buying an even more highly rated helmet to replace the SHOEI with even tho that one may have saved my life/neck! Definitely have the lesson learned re how I am riding but nonetheless will of course still want to challenge myself to improve but hopefully in a bit more sensible manner!

Have fingers crossed all will be well for the KCR, we shall see. Definitely on rest this coming weekend tho!

See you guys all VERY soon and THANK YOU!

Hi mate, the bars are from www.sunlineracing.com. They are "Sunline AV ONE - OS CRF/KXF/RMZ 9710" model.

I can't believe they are not bent to all hell either! I guess they may be quite good but personally had never heard of them before.

Dave what was your diagnosis at hospital? :doctor:

Hi Andy, had the X-rays at 11am today at Pacific Radiology. Apparently no fractures currently visible. They said if the pain continues even with rest that I may need re-xray to see if any hairline/stress fractures show up later after time to calcify a little BUT they felt probably the pinpoint pain areas may be ligament damage.

Basically am on doctors orders to REST for at least a week as much as poss now and we'll see how it goes - still hopeful to make the KCR though! We shall see!

Thx for asking after how it went mate, much appreciated.

I can't believe they are not bent to all hell either! I guess they may be quite good but personally had never heard of them before. The difference in strength between OEM steel (or cheap alloy) and even the middling-priced alloy bars is amazing. Well worth the spend. First job on all dirty bikes should be new strong bars, hand guards, and crash-worthy indicators and mirrors. All the expensive but fragile OEM stuff goes in a box to re-install when you sell the bike. The stuff you bought gets carried over to the next bike hopefully.

I also have a theory that the plastic Acerbis hand guards on the DR absorb more impact due to them flexing as they are plastic versus the metal Barkbusters I had on KLX (which got bent bars) that don't flex so much and thus push the torque thru to the bars and bend them!

True? Possible??

In my experience the plastic Acerbis guards were fairly useless, as they rotate on the bars due to a design flaw (plastic keyed section at the bar ends is weak). I broke heaps of levers with them on (trail rides eg Woodhill), they always twisted around the bars in even a minor fall, exposing the levers.

Solid barkbusters will transfer the energy, but if they transfer it inboard to a thicker (read: stronger) part of the bar - while simultaneously protecting your levers - then I think you are in front.

You can always get lucky or unlucky; however my luck with the barkbusters is consistently good, with the plastic Acerbis' consistently bad.

mine has it and mines one of the last made (03). Its has a flat 4 stroke like power band (for a 2 stroke) but the traction control was a joke - I think the timing gets retarded (not sure if I should use that word) if the engine accelerates rapidly.

I've got the Acerbis plastic guards. After replacing multiple levers on trail rides, I've given up. Both brake and clutch are now filed down to 2 finger length. Don't know how I get a WOF.

I've often wondered how the original bars have stayed straight. You guys might be on to something.
