would you rather look silly with leathers for 20mins infront of people you'll never meet or silly for the rest of you life with road rash and the scars associated with it? :oi-grr:

Ouch Paddy:blank:
Thanks for sharing and hopefully there will be folks that are able to learn from others mistakes.

When will people stop thinking that the roads in town are softer than the roads between towns:bash:

the roads in town are often harder, parked cars, parking meter, lamp posts, gutters to name the obvious. Out in the country there is grass, power poles, cow shit, fence posts and wire....but the road surface is the same in both places.
I love my skin, I want to keep it. If others think Im a dick wearing full leathers, then thats their problem , not mine. I dont allow my ego to dictate over saftey. I even wear one of those High Vis vests at night, every little bit of protection for me and my skin. I love myself more than I care what others think.

My son learnt the follies of not wearing right pants on his KX125...came home yesterday looking like he'd been mauled by a tiger after he rode through a thorn bush

Everything apart from my legs had good gear, Good jacket from Quasi, work boots, Alpinestars gloves. Gloves and Jacket worked very well, they took the hit on the road, the damage to the leg was done when my leg got pinned between the bike and the car i hit. Was doing about 100k at point of impact.

Gawd , yeah real eye opener paddy, thanks .. sorry bout the accident though.

Got another question hahaha.. .. i realise the leather pants with armor might be better but, i see alot of people with that other material.. ( havent bothered checking out what its called but it just looks like breathable nylon or something )
so would they provide the same type of protection as leather?

Courdura,

Not as good as leather for abrasion, armor helps for impact protection though.

Tis somewhat more waterproof though.

+1 for that.

Can I print them off to show them to the twits that ride around in shorts and tee shirt.

Cordura is usually good for one reasonable slide down the road and the armour is good against the impact. Leather is better for abraision protection.
My recent accident would have been a lot worse if I hadn't been wearing all the gear and that was only at 50 k's.

I'm sure he was wearing women's undies as the nylon content is a lot higher and so the burn factor is greater. Thats what is recommended on the rail trail anyway - MENS undies as not so much nylon and therefore less arse burny!

Holy crap! OUCH! (God why did I look... but it's one of those times when you know you just have to...) Excellent lesson. I feel a bit sick.

Hope it's on the mend (as much can be expected), all power to you for the best possible recovery.

OK, tomorrow I'm wearing my jeans again (this morning I wore just my thin poly-something work trousers with $70 Revit waterproof pants over the top). Hmmmm. But I don't have proper thick motorbike pants, so interested to hear others' opinions / experiences on jeans in accidents at city speeds...? Not enough? My morning commute involves the 70kph bit along Aotea Quay if its dry, and all the rest is in town primarily along the waterfront (apart from the 60kph bit along the Old Hutt Road, where everyone seem to speed!.)

I'm the same really eh, I haven't owned any good bike pants yet. Just been wearing jeans, but now I've seen that I'm not too keen to come off in 'em :pinch:

Really wanna look in to leathers but I think it's the wrong time of year right now considering they're not really all that waterproof. Cordura pants might be next on the list to match the jacket, however for spring/summer I will sort myself some quasi leathers I think.

Leather pants for me 24/7 on the bike
Dont care if it get hot and sticky
Ive only got one layer of skin,
and I am not donating that to transit new zealand to resurface any road.
When it rains , on goes my bright orange PVC wet weater gear.
Who the fuck cares what it looks like,
I can be seen, Im dry, and I still get to keep my skin if I hit the road.
Cost of leather bike pants $150
Cost of skin graft ( taxpayers money thus mine) $ ???,???.??

Right on! Second that. I couldn't care less if I look over the top with safety, it *MY* safety not theirs.

good thick jeans would be ok round town as far as a short slide goes...no impact protection though.Hellava lot better than shorts or thin synthetic!

Makes you think doesn't it.....,Hell, as I get older I get thoughts on my bike like "if I were suddenly dumped onto the road at this speed how fucked up would I be?"

Been riding my entire life and have only ever worn jeans at best. In another thread someone claimed gluing patches of leather on the inside of your jeans made a pretty worthy set of bike pants but I can neither confirm or deny this would be the case, But it would have to be better then just jeans and cost very little.

Ha ha i had full leathers riding around on my Suzuki tu 250

I didn't get any photos taken, so i don't know what i looked like, but i saw someone looking with a big grin o there face, could be taken either way! didn't think on it, but i took that bike everywhere on dirt and tarmac at as good a clip as it would go, rubbing your barefoot gently over tarmac road gives you an idea what it would feel like comming off at speed, id stick to my leathers no matter what it looked like.
Thou did levitate across a road comming off a motorbike in Thailand with only some muslin pants on, took a little bit of skin off, don't know how i got away with that, this is why i mention i must of levitated!
