View Full Version : Based on the KB poll only 25% of riders ride inside speed limits.
Conquiztador

From the poll that close to 230 KB's have answered we see that only 25% of riders that participated ride 100k/h (or below). That leaves 75% who speed. with 55% stating that they normally do 120k/h on a open road.
Given that we can not really trust what people on here say this means diddly. Or does it???
I wonder if we took these figures and compared them to how many % of the bikers in NZ have accidents where they end up in hospital, if the % would be similar to the 5% who state that they ride at 160k/h or above???
I should really do the research before I post this. But I am not that interested. Just something I wondered. And I am sure that someone else who have all that statistic info at their fingetips will be able to come up with an answer.

if the law makers were really switched on... they would lower the speed limits. The resulting increase in revenue gathered in fines..... might pay for the ACC deficit... then again...

So in Katman's book, 75% of people here are wankers.
I suspect the 75% who travel at over 100kmph would probably apply to cagers as well.

Interesting that one - I confess to being one of the 75% in the 100-120 range on the bike, however in the car on the same roads it's pretty close to the speedy limit. Probably due to having the family in the car with me.
I do ride differently to the way I drive.
In town
Bike - carefully always looking out for the cars.
Car - somewhat more aggressively - 'it's my space and I'm going for it'
Open Road
Bike - zipp do dee dee da ... was that a car I passed - he/she must have been doing 80
Car - that was a cool bike passing us dear ;)

Do you wank?
a. Never - it's the devils work
b. No - do you know how much Viagra costs? - what a waste.
c. Only when the Farmers catalogue gets delivered.
d. Daily

True - and when riding there are very few conditions that would allow one to wank........... (that includes riding past High Schools for you young men OK).

The "safest" speed on the open road is reckoned to be the 85 th percentile of speeds driven where there would be no limits to constrain everyone.
Which, in general observation would be around the 118-125 kph region.
So, no surprises there!
At a safety forum here in Perth last week, it was revealed that 40% of bike fatalities and 60% of high speed pursuit involved riders with,:-
no license, never had a license, stolen or borrowed bike or riding outside the requirements of a license, drugs & alcohol.
Often a combination of many of these factors.
So, what are the figures in NZ?

Results are absolutely meaningless unless you're a journalist or a politician because poll was not random so statistically useless and even more useless without other road user information to put it in context besides the "I can go faster than you" factor of voluntary polls. Sample size would suggest a confidence level approaching a large dose of salt :msn-wink:

Fully agree. It was nothing more then an indication. But the most interesting part I found was that the % stayed the same between the 100k, 120k and 140k from very low numbers up to the final numbers of just under 230.

It cant be just me that thinks at a 100km/h you fall asleep/loose concentration because it is so ridiculously slow. At faster speeds i tend to keep focus alot better, concentrate on surroundings more and overall just more vigilant.
Ever notice all those drivers that just 'latch on' to the car infront of them and do the snooze all the way to auckland? thats not lack of capability, its stupidity and lack of concentration.
Even my 76 (or was it 77?) year old granmother (who lives in south africa) can drive capably at 120Km/h (which is the speedlimit in SA). so come on lol..

You would think so here, 90 kph limit if you are brave enough to go that slow. you sit on 120, cars coming toward you at 120, your on a narrow winding road and you get these suicide jockies doing 150 playing chicken with other suicide jockies where there would be a double yellow centerline in any other country....
After that, the worst drivers in NZ still make for a relaxing motoring experience...
Biggest fine I have had here is 300 som....about NZ$13 and no points...

Well, duh!
Look at how many speeding tickets are issued each year - either some people get lots of tickets, or most people don't stick to the speed limits.
Interestingly (or perhaps not), I try to drive at around 110 km/h in the car, and sometimes go as fast as 130, but last time I was out on the bike on the open road, I found I had to work at getting my speed to 100km/h. I was tending to ride slower than the speed limit. :eek5:
Dunno why - too much round town riding? Yet on my motorway commute I usually sit between 100 and 120.

Hardly, my busa's limited to 299, or so I've been told.
Anyway, comparing a poll of motorcycles against a poll of cars for example, is a bit biased against the riders, as we dont have the same cross section as cars, i.e. aged drivers, slow drivers. Bikes tend to attract the faster drivers, the thrill seekers if you will, so of course there will be more stats stacked against us.
And IMHO i feel safer when riding faster than cars because then i dont have to worry about whats behind or beside me, and just whats ahead.

Interestingly, when they put some speed limits up from 50kph to 60kph, they found that the people who were doing 55-60kph were now only doing 60-65kph, so only 5kph over the limit instead of 10kph. still speeding i guess.

OMG LBD are you really in Bishkek in the Kyrgyz Republic? If people here want to complain about other drivers they should see what you have to deal with. Do you ride or use a cage? The closest I've been to where you are is Taraz, near the Kazak border and that was mental enough.
For your fine did you get an official traffic ticket or a swifty spot fine from an upstanding local police representative?
I've heard many stories about the Kyrgyz Republic and they weren't good ones.

Wrong poll. This one: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=96361
How long has the speed limit been at 100kph? Its been ages I am sure. In the intervening period, road quality has improved, vehicles have improved (and bikes obviously) so why has the open road speed limit not been improved?
I was in the south island doing a tour a wee while ago and got caught at 120 on an open deserted piece of road. (When I say deserted, there was me and a cop and some sheep... looking sheepish-ly at the cop from the other side of the fence...winking and such, however I digress.)
Considering there was NO traffic, straight road, excellent quality of the road, surely there is some justification for SOME roads in NZ to have a more realistic open road limit. I dont want a ridiculous limit, just something a little more sensible. Perhaps 140kph? -And lets be honest, PLENTY of bikes are cruising at that speed.
For your fine did you get an official traffic ticket or a swifty spot fine from an upstanding local police representative?

And the stories are all true, good to find someone to substantiate some of my yarns, I think some people were starting to think they were a bit far fetched
Had about 4 fines in 2 1/2 years all of the swifty spot fine nature....
Kyrgyzstan is the 4 most corrupt country in the world...NZ is in the 3 least.
b. No - do you know how much Viagra costs? - US$26 over the counter without a perscription....I know this cause some of the blokes I work with want to get their monies worth when they go out with several "ladies of negoiatable affection" after they have been at site 4 to 6 weeks.

To all who think that LBD's stories are far fetched.... They are probably downstated. Here is a link to the American state department description of the Kyrgyz Republic http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_945.html it makes for interesting reading, especially the bit marked crime.
To give you another idea, I thought of traveling to Kyrgyzstan while I was in Kazakhstan a few years back. Got to the border with our papers and invite so we could go in and the border guards (at least I think they were border guards) were looking at my wife like hungry dogs and the only one who spoke english told me that he could easily have me killed at take her for his wife if he felt like it. At this point we politely declined to go into the office with them, retreated to our car and the relative safety of Taraz. When I told our hosts what happened they exclaimed "Oh it must be pay week, the guards arent usually that forward and might be full of vodka".
Compared to the Kyrgyz Republic Kazakhstan is a modern, safe, enlightened, advanced and liberated place. Sorry that border thing peppered my view of the whole place. I've litterally never been so scared in my life.

The most important rule of statistics that learned was: Corelation does not mean causality !
hence you can NOT assume just because something is similar figures, that one is caused by the other.
Leave the stats to the pros conquestador and just go out and ride your bike and be happy.

And I was only referring to what this silly poll came up with. At no time have I stated that it was factual, that we can come to any conclusions from this. The only thing I was intrigued by was that the replies indicated that only 25% of the ones who answered stayed inside the speed limit. And also that when I followed it the % stayed the same from almost the start.
I have been involved in some statistic gathering and realise that there is so much more to it then asking a silly question on a web site. We would need to consider how the data was collected, any possible interference that was there. We would need other groups to compare the results with, random sampling is a must, the questions can not be leading, and so it goes on.
Suddenly I remeber why I did not take to statistics.
But what I do find interesting is how some on here has a need to try and explain away the outcome from this...
